NBC Begins French Open Coverage On Saturday

John McEnroe By Adrianna Outlaw

A famous French Open mixed doubles team has reunited for another Roland Garros run. Fans anxiously anticipating an Andre Agassi-Steffi Graf mixed doubles partnership that was prevented due to Graf's pregnancy can tune into 1977 Roland Garros mixed doubles champions John McEnroe and Mary Carillo, who will share the broadcast booth when NBC begins its 17 hours of Roland Garros coverage this weekend.

The network, which will telecast its 24th French Open, begins its coverage on Saturday, May 31st at noon Eastern time. NBC will continue third and fourth round coverage Sunday at noon.

Host Ted Robinson, known to tennis fans as the voice of USA Network's U.S. Open coverage and to Mets fans as the voice of reason in another season of struggles in Flushing, anchors NBC's coverage. The outspoken, opinionated McEnroe, whose annual trip to Paris is accompanied by the memory of holding a two sets to love lead over Ivan Lendl in the 1984 final only to blow the lead and bow in five sets, will be broadcasting his 12th French Open.

Tennis Week writer Bud Collins, who will be working his 24th French Open for NBC, and Carillo, who is making her NBC French Open debut, will accompany Robinson and McEnroe on the network's broadcast team.

Currently working as an analyst for ESPN in its daily French Open telecasts, Carillo succeeds long-time NBC analyst Chris Evert, who retired from broadcasting.

NBC's coverage of the 2003 French Open, culminates with live coverage of the women's final on Saturday, June 7th — in previous year's the network opted to telecast the women's final on a tape-delay basis much to the frustration of tennis fans — and the men's final on Sunday, June 8th.

Now if ya'll haven't ever seen dicing up of some good tennis coverage, I suggest you pay attention to NBC.

Let's see, Venus and JenCap play on Sat. I'm wouldn't be surprised if we got about 10 minutes a piece of their coverage and the rest of the coverage will be on Agassi's anticipated matchup on Sunday.

Carillo doesn't bash Venus....she's very balanced imo. And Cliff, I swear that man is in Love with Vee from some of his comments in the last year.

Mary and Nav love the Williamses... Cliff and Chris remind me of dirty old men who want some young brown sugar... especially Cliff's comments about Venus lookin' like a giraffe or whatever animal he said during the AO... gazelle?... he likes her... um... 'assests'. Pam and MJ remind me of the two bitches in h.s. that no one liked so they talk about everybody else.

Jmac... oh gawd... I just wish my tv could dub his comments. Like when he says 'Venus doesn't know what to do out there...', I wish Spongebob's voice would dub over him with something like 'she's ready, she's ready, she's ready, she's ready-eddy-eddy-ready'. that would be so cool! :bounce:
