She soundly (or silently) lost to Steffi 6-2, 6-1.

There was a big hub-bub about her grunting. Tauziat bitched to chair umpire about it, Navratilova bitched to chair ump about it. So the English press :fiery: created the "Grunt-o-Meter", and measured how many decibels Monica grunted. She supressed the grunt completely and lost soundly. Her father said it was the worst injustice to her career (until 93...) and that she may not have won but should of at least had the chance to play her game. She received 2 code warnings (1 in each QF/SF) matches for her grunting. That's so stupid and now certain players yelp like they're being attacked and it's not even considered.

in the semis against navratilova, she was grunting "too loud." the same "happened" against tauziat, but nobody really cared about that match, i guess. after all this, monica was warned that if her grunts exceeded a certain decibel, she would be cited for a code violation and lose the point. she didnt grunt in the final against steffi and doesnt have much to show for it. ppl are still angry not only bc it was monicas best shot at wimbledon (she didnt play in 91), but it was bc of the manner that she had to play in order to lose.

OMG I never knew that she got cautioned for it ever! Thats stupid.

Never mind though, Steffi would have beaton Monica anyhow.

It actually was against the rules back then, I think. Then they realized it was a stupid rule, so they changed it, luckily for Serena.

Wasn't there also a bomb scare at Monicas hotel that year, or was it a different year, or it never happened I just dreamed it or something? That probably didn't help much (if it happened  ).

that was true but already at the start of the second week!

it was not against the rules ever heard of jimmy connors?

the british media always looks for a victim. in 1990 steffi even had to ask for a press forbidding regarding any privat questions since they were totally stalking her :o

Well that is in very bad taste! That's like a witch hunt. Poor Monica, she should have grunted their ears off.

There was a bomb threat to her on Court 1 (I think). It was fake, obviously... But they called in dogs and took her away w/security guards. She endured so much that fortnight,...and still was just 1 away from the "real" Grand Slam.....aka the Seles Slam.

She still couldn't beat Graf on grass. Look at thier h2h, she's never beaten Steffi on a fast hardcourt, or grass.

It was against the rules for women, which is why it was such a stupid rule. I might be wrong, I was quite young then, but that was always my understanding. Although, I've just heard the thing about Father Christmas...

the thing is monica didn't get another real chance anymore (or didn't took it after 96). if she had won the title only once then nobody had talked about it anymore!

Maybe she would not have won anyway...but she should have been ALLOWED to play her game her way. Then we would have seen for sure.

I never heard about that, but if that's true then it's pure discrimination :fiery:

I think steffi had won wimbledon 92 anyway. she was so motivated. probably on her most motivated from 90-95 that was already clear in the semis!

and this time she didn't scream like in the 66 match!

I agree... but w/grunting it would have at least been close...and who knows what may have happened.

Coulda...woulda...shoulda...

steffi was also stalked by the media though at 3:00 in the night she was ringed by some journalist if she was having a visitor;)

But when the press asked Steffi about Monica's grunting... she said she hears it, but it doesn't affect her. If anything hearing her level of grunt allows her (Steffi) to actually get her timing right. If Monica grunts big, she knows it's a heavy hit, etc. So, Steffi didn't really care it seemed whether she grunted or not. It was all about the GruntOMeter and the London Sun (It was the SUn right?)

Media calling you at 0300 and death threats are a little different, hon. :) But yes, I understand what you're saying.

irma

steffi apparently said something like. in paris she was really loud. will I complain? we will see. but I don't know if she meant that serious or as a tongue in the cheek.

I thought this story was not true, but I read it in a 92 article last week on a steffi site!

death threats are really bad worse then grunt issues. trying to fear a 18 year old girl (I think it also happened in the french) who only plays a game because of a shameless war is aweful :fiery:

Steffi had a guy attempt suicide at her doorstep. If Steffi had death threats do you think she would have made them public? Doubt it.

irma
May 29th, 2003, 09:10 PM
yes she got a pot with her favorite jam which was poisoned at her home and she also got a death threat at a plane once. that are just two I know about. there might have been more.

AjdeNate!

I'm sure it was Monica that told the world about her threats... since there was thousands of people courtside when the bomb sniffing dogs were called out...

It would have been nice if she had have grunted in the 1992 final because then some people wouldn't doubt Steffi's win. Steffi deserved to win. She played her game. Monica didn't play her game so she deserved to lose.

It would have been nice if the British media weren't witch-hunting asswipes so Monica wouldn't have been intimidated into not playing her game. It would have been nice if players weren't so bitchy too...

It also would have been nice if Wimbledon had a roof so matches wouldn't be spoilt by rain. It was a final... It deserved to be played out perfectly. But Wimbledon and their obsession with keeping things old and traditional...

It's not just Monica that lost that day. Tennis fans lost that day. I think it would have been a good match if both had played to their potential. I still believe Steffi would have won... But if only Monica had felt able to put up a bigger fight...

the only thing that was bad about it and even as a steffi fan I have to admit that. monica was not new to the tour, she had been for 4 years (I include 88) and she always made noise and suddenly they started to complain. that's a little bit hypocrite and I don't take the on grass it's more annoying crap.

tauziat and nav had played monica before and I doubt she was silent then :o

Yep. But Monica wanted to be liked, like most young adults. Acceptance is very important - and I think she felt that if she could stop the grunting - then maybe the media would leave her alone about the issue. She made a mistake and tried to be quiet to please others - bad decision.

The rain delays I believe played a larger role in the match than people maybe realize, at least to me. Steffi seemed unaffected by them, her shots, game and the rest looked the same as right before a delay and right after one. Monica seemed to take a couple of games to "warm up" after a rain delay, but there were several delays, and Graf would skunk a couple of games from her, and then the rain, repeated several times. Suddenly, after hours but little play, Monica was down 2-6, 1-4 or something before she ever got really warmed up.

I do not think it was so much Tauziat and Navratilova who scared her into not grunting, the press then was unrelenting, the grunt-o-meter I think was from the start of the tournament and they were bitter that she had not played the year before, in their minds with no excuse.

Navratilova complained quite a bit, Steffi didn't , but Steffi is now remembered as the big bad witch.

All Steffi ever wanted to do was play tennis, and I'm forever thankful for that.

only australia 2001 was legit since it was steffi who stayed awake all night to make sick and nervous andre ready for the final ;)

If Monica had played Gabby instead of Steffi and lost??? They'd talk about it in the context of Monica playing intimidated cos of the media but... Not on the same level its talked about now. It's talked about cos its Monica v Steffi. The great rivalry. I think there should be a Steffi n Monica movie. I'd play Steffi and Eliza Dushku could play Monica.
