Venus struggles into round three

PARIS (AFP) - Venus Williams (news - web sites) of the United States moved into the third round of the French Open (news - web sites) women's singles but was less than convincing in a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win over Evie Dominikovic of Australia.

The third seed will next face either Silvia Farina Elia of Italy or Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic for a place in the last 16.

It was far from vintage Venus, however, as she blew hot and cold against an opponent ranked a lowly 110 in the world.

Williams looked well on top in the first set on the Philippe Chatrier centre-court, but started to falter in the second as the Sydneysider, celebrating her 23rd birthday, grew in confidence.

Breaking the Williams serve to lead 5-3, Dominikovic failed to serve out for the second set, but in the next game she stunned Williams with her aggressive play and levelled the match when the American netted an easy forehand.

She had Williams worried at the start of the third, but gradually the Australian wilted and Williams was able to wrap up the match breaking her opponent's serve in the third and seventh games.

Williams said that while happy to go through she would have to play much better if she hoped to turn the tables on her sister Serena to whom she has lost the last four Grand Slam finals.

"I just wasn't feeling as good as in the first match I played," she said.

"My serve was better but my groundstrokes were bad. In the first match it was the other way around. Now I just have to do them both well in the same match."

Williams said that her hunger to win was just as sharp as ever despite the millions of dollars she has won and her growing interest in dress-design.

"The only thing going on right now in my mind is the tennis," she said.

It's good to know Venus is focused. I hope I can read the rest of her interview. But the RG site appears to have problems posting her interviews :fiery:

If Venus' mind wasn't on tennis, she certainly wouldn't be at RG. She's pulled out of big tourneys before because of other things going on in her life. As a fan...sure! I'd like to see her playing better right now. But she's hanging in there. She's winning her matches so far. Hopefully she'll continue to improve and be the force that she is. Venus is a champion. Champions know how to continue being great.

COME ON VENUS!!! :worship:

I hope that tennis is the only thing going on in her mind for now. Even my father (who doesn't know much about woman's tennis) said she was playing like she wasn't interested in the game

Glad to hear from Venus' mouth that tennis is still priority in her life and the hunger for winning slams is still there.

IMO, Venus is so proud you don't know what's going on in her mind even if she says tennis is her top priority. She is the type of person who will not reveal everything.

Hope she gets better each match. :D

Lien, you have to get some more matches of Vee for you dad to watch b/c she always looks like that. One of the few that you would never be able to tell if they are winning, losing, happy, or mad!!

The only thing I ever notice is how she puts her head down with her hands kinda over her nose, and she might put the other hand on her hip, but thats about it.

Yeah I know it. But he likes mens tennis more and the only female player he really likes is Justine Henin, so he isn't very interested I am afraid.

I don't care, only thing that matters is that Venus enjoys what she is doing :)

wta, I love Venus but she did look like she wanted to be elsewhere in her first round match. I have watched so many of her matches and she just looked worried or something IMO.

Venus is still the second best player in the world, imo. She doesn't seem to have the confidence she's had in the past but she'll get there. I'm just worried that perhaps she's a bit injured. It seemed to physically hurt her when she served. I heard the rumors of an abdominal strain and if that's the case then I'd say she's hanging in quite well considering the circumstances.

Also, while we're on the topic of Venus I wanted to know if anyone else was completely annoyed by the commentating during her first two matches. Manly Carillo cannot say one positive thing about Venus. She just goes on and on about how she's not the same player she was and how emotionally worn out she is in regards to her losses to Serena..blah blah blah. Pam Shriver is just as bad. Reiterating the fact that Venus hasn't played enough (hello, she's had injuries) and how perhaps she's lost focus..It's almost as ridiculous as the fact that Pam wore a headband that sat an inch off her head, with a ponytail on national television..

Venus cares. She was even showing disgust with herself at times, seldom seen emotion from her. She yelled "COME ON!" after dumping a few easy shots. Mary Carillo summed it up best when said "Venus's fighting spirit is the best in the game. It's so good that she is able to drag a way below par game into the next round just by sheer will."

vw43, pam shriver is the worst. Mary Carillo is sort of like a flip flopper IMO. One minute she is saying good things(when things are going right) the next minute she is negative. I tend to like her commentating outside of Martina Nav, and Zina Garrison. IMO, they are the best because they will not allow personal bias to cloud their judgement during a match. Also love to hear Nav's insight.

Nav is the best, even if she said some things about both sisters in the past... like them being arrogant for having other interests outside of tennis. but I think Nav has gotten to know them on a personal level, she did play dubs with Ree and has special insight. The other commentators don't talk to them outside of grand slam promo pieces and on the court interviews.

But thx for the nice comments. Finally, a thread regarding Vee with no drama. :)

Actually Carillo has said plenty of good stuff about Venus, including her regal appearance and her always competitive fighting spirit.

Oh my God harloo, you are so right about Mary Carillo. I call her a backstabber and two face. I would never forget her commentary at the AO when Serena was playing Kim it was very negative. At the NASDQA you would never think it was the same person commentating.

This is what I read about V not giving interviews. She was excused from the interviews so that her trainer can take care of her abdominal strain right after her matches. I do not know if it is true but it makes a lot of sense.

Well... we have quotes, so there must have been an interview at some point.

no, leslie, I think sart is saying that since Venus has been quoted in articles this week, she had to have had interviews done. Venus has had plenty of interviews... there's a pic of Venus in a press conference on wtatour.com

all of the interviews about Venus' matches this week contain quotes from Venus so she has to be talking to somebody! :)

I understand what you are saying but that is what I read on the ESPN message board from another poster who claims to know inside info about the W/S.
