PARIS - Corina Morariu, back on tour after shoulder surgery and looking physically stronger than she has in months, fought from behind Tuesday at the French Open to win her first Grand Slam match in three years.

But it's her emotional strength that continues to shine through. Since 2001 she has missed more than a year of playing time while being treated for a rare form of leukemia, which is now in remission. She missed another five months in 2003 with a bursitis problem. And now she is going through a divorce and a move out of Boca Raton to southern California.

"I need to be on my own for a while and have some independence, and I'm looking forward to it," Morariu said after her 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 44 Daja Bedanova.

She said she has separated from Andrew Turcinovich, her former coach whom she married in 1999.

"He's moved back to Australia and we're in the process of getting divorced," Morariu said. "When I get back from Wimbledon, I'm going to pack up. I've got a ton of friends out there. I've lived in Florida since I was 4, so there's a lot of memories there. But it's a tough time for me."

She made her comeback from surgery May 19 in Strasbourg, France, where she won a round before losing to No. 11 Anastasia Myskina.

"After not having played a lot of matches, it's a nice feeling to win a few. My body has been through a lot," Morariu said. "But I've been working really hard in the gym."

In the second round of the Open, Morariu will face Paola Suarez, 26. Morariu is looking for all the tennis she can play and, in an effort to recapture her elite doubles status, she has teamed with former doubles No. 1 Rennae Stubbs, who split after last season with longtime partner Lisa Raymond. Morariu reached No. 1 in doubles twice in 2000 while playing with Lindsay Davenport. Davenport is playing with Raymond this year.

goodness, what a rough couple of years for her..
I was so pleased to see she won her first round match, though. now that she is out of the singles, hopefully she has better luck in dubs.

I guess in hindsight, we shouldn't be that surprised - I hear it's not uncommon for marriages to break up after one partner has gone through a life-threatening illness. Still, it's sad.

Best of luck to both of them.

Poor Corina! She sounds so matter-of-fact, but I am sure she is aching inside. Even the breakup of a bad marriage is painful, but this marriage was a good one even pretty recently, as we know from the things Corina said after finishing her cancer treatment :(

I feel so bad for her, but it's cool she will be living near Lindsay!! :hearts:

Lindsay and Corina have one of the most admirable friendships

Hi everyone,
Well, that's really upsetting to here. Poor Corina. It's shocking to hear actually, because after all the cancer, and everything, she always said how much it meant to her to have Andrew there with her. She even said she was happy to be able to be with him all the time. I don't know what could have gone wrong. When I saw them in August at World Team Tennis, they looked happy. But then again, it was really weird that he wasn't there to share her first Grand Slam with her at the US Open in August. Poor girl is off on her own. After everything she has been through. That must be really tough for her. She is such a strong person. Her family lives in Florida, so maybe she just needs to get away for a while. He moved back to Australia? So she has been on her own. They just moved in January or Feb too, when I got the letter from her.
I hope everything works out for her in the end. I hope her tennis takes off, and she stays healthy and happy. He was her coach since she was 15, and he is 11 years older then her. Most people don't stay together now anyway. It's really sad if you think about it.
It's a shame she's out of singles, but at least she made round two. I was so happy for her. Her and Renee just lost doubles 1-6, 6-7. She's playing mixed with Jonas Bjorkman...so good luck with that! Keep your head up Corina!

It's hard for a man to go through something like cancer with his wife. Perhaps he felt she was too dependent on him. I don't know but I do know that all this "poor Corina" stuff is silly. That girl has more inner strength than anybody I know. :hearts: She's been through a lot and she's trying to get over it rather than continue to depend on her family and that man she called "husband" because, in the end, you only have yourself to depend on.

Anyway, she has friends in California and she has her tennis and she'll be just fine, thank you. :worship:

[A little advice to all women: NEVER, EVER DEPEND ON A MAN. They are basically worthless.]

Poor Corina? People get divorced everyday. I just hope she doesn't have to pay half of her money to this guy she married.

Am I the only one who has a problem w/people sharing thier every misery and setback with the world. Her divorce should be between her and her estranged husband.

He was her coach so there was basically no money coming in during the time she was ill and injured. Maybe he found himself another "sugar baby" to take care of him. Guess he thought having a sick wife wouldn't make him rich.

Let's hope that Corina's comeback continues to progress well...especially considering her off-court turmoils.

She seems genuinely nice. I will continue to cheer for her.
