It took three eratic sets, but VENUS got the win and moves on to her third round match.

Congrats VENUS! :)

Technically dissecting someone's game is pointless as far as I am concerned. That's like those posters who claimed that Venus looked awkward, served like crap, or had weird footwork. They were gropin. results , results, results , is all that matter to me. She played horribly and still won the match-- time to move on

Congrats Venus...I am furious with Mary Carillo and Cliff Drysdale right now!! After the match they were talking like Venus had LOST!! "What does this do to her half of the draw," they droned.
They never say those kinds of things about other players, including Lleyton Hewitt who is #1 and still struggled

Venus is hitting the ball with more authority but still waaaay too many careless unnecessary errors. Clean up your game for the next round. :)

Good job, Vee! :bounce:

VERY good point, Robrich! :)

congrats venus. Evie's record before today was something like 20-46 or so. If it was a tougher opponent, venus would have gone bye-bye. Fortunately, it wasn't. :)

I agree with you that our comments mean shit but the same way we can come on here and say wonderful things about her when she was playing really well, why can't people make statements on how she is playing when she is playing badly- if she is playing like crap, she's playing like crap---

congrats on your win and i will refrain from my arm chair comments :D

I agree with you bajangurl. If she played like crap she played like crap. Playing this way she will not make it to the final. I don't know what is going on with her.

Congrats, Vee!
bravo, Evie!

Now, I want to see Venus with the knee patch and hand bands back on. These presumably will provide her with more support, more confidence, and more authority in execution and power delivery.

All I can say is that she is really making me nervous. Hopefully she will continue to regain her form as the tourny advances.

Good one Vee, she almost gave me a heart attack but got the W in the end. I just want this nightmare called RG to be over and lets move on to wimby!!!

I'm sure Venus will pick up her game in the next few rounds, but if she doesn't, then it would be time to worry. Venus played as well as she had to today, I'm sure this one will benefit her later in the draw.

I agree. The commentators kept going on and on about how unhappy Venus "must" be with her play, but I bet when you read her interview, she is going to say she was satisfied with her play...it's not about playing perfect tennis, it's about living to fight another day...by whatever means necessary...

*wipes brows* dammit, Venus... I swear to Hova that you need to get it together! 3 sets?!? *sigh*

when the match started, Mary basically said she didn't know if Venus would make it through the match b/c of her injury. She said she was hurting so bad that she was going to forfeit the match. When the match started, Vee was making crazy errors... she had 20 ufe's first set. but she pulled it out

when she was down 3-4 in the second and tied it up at 4-4, I was sure she was going to break then hold but it wasn't meant to be. Vee had some wonderful points though. Her swinging volley was so on but at times she looked so tired at the net.

The third set started off shaky as well cuz she broke easy then got broken but then she ran away with it.

My complaint is that there were far too many deuce games and it wore Venus out. She needs to rest.

If Venus is hurting then she needs to just pull out. I know she want's to play, and I do too but if the injury is still lingering around and bothering her then she should just rest for Wimby.

I am dissapointed with her play, but she's on too the 3rd round and it's not like we havent seen her play badly in slams before. She has been in a lot of matches in slams where she has played horrible and still won.

I can only hope things get better, and try to keep the faith.

Good luck Vee!!! :D ;)

Is it the stomach injury or the knee injury. In either case, she will not win this title if she can't play her best, which is the case at the moment.

it's the abdominal strain still... she just has precautionary tape on her knees, like always.

I'm trying not to be too down about it... she did advance. I'll wait to read the interview... if they post one, that is.

She must have muscles of steel in her stomach if she has gotten this far. But what is bothering me is if she rested for three weeks, how come it hasn't healed?

I have no idea. I guess it was on the way to being healed but having to serve may have reinjured it. Serena well no one shorter than Venus has to twist their body like she does when she has to serve. Venus also won a lot of points on her swinging bh volley which also twists the upper part of her body in the opposite direction of her lower part, further aggravating the injury. It could be that simple.

Unless she can get better by Saturday, I don't see her continuring in this tournament.

How do they know she is hurt, was she grimacing, did she say something before the match? I wouldn't be surprised if she is in pain, she isn't the type to broadcast when she has problems.

some abdominal strains take as much as 6 months - 1 year to heal... I still believe. I refuse to doubt Venus-- if she wins that's great if not, life will go on :bounce: :bounce:

Venus wasn't bent over in pain but she was making faces and the tour trainers could have talked to Mary before the match. I'm sure there are ways of finding out.

If that is the case and she is still suffering from the strain, I think she should pull out of the tournament. Do you think she will have to sit out for the rest of the year if her stomach strain is really as bad as is being reported?

Ouch ...that sounds painful just thinking about it!! I hope that is not the case.

Venus will suffer and suffer if it's something she wants badly. I mean she came out in the semi's of the tour champs, obviously hurt but she still went out there.

Venus is hard-headed. She wants another grand slam so badly that she'll go through pain for it. And plus she said she did not want to be #3 for long and she has to play to keep her ranking. I personally don't think it's worth it.

looking for a comparison

"A damaged battleship desperately trying to shrug off the next opposition."
yes that is a good one.

Who will be the destroyer ?

Clijsters ? Nah . Way too far out. Zvonareva or certainly Cap will finish the work.

Venus is rusty, this kind of match imho is what she needs though.. MATCH PLAY.

Imho I think Venus is not going all out yet. She is conserving her energy for future rounds. I do think she is hurting a bit when she serves, but she is playing and will not make that the excuse. I thik it's more rust than anything. She had some brilliant shots though and bad errors but she is through and only time will tell.

Mary and Cliff at times were saying un-biased statements then at other times spoke without realizing they put the hoods back on. Oh well they are better than MJF and Pam. AKA DUMB AND DUMBER.

I didn't see that Venus was suffering from any kind of injury today...she was moving well, getting to a lot of balls, and her knee wasn't taped...true, her first serve was off, though...

I don't think you need to worry. Venus was out for quite a long time, so maybe she just needs to play some matches to find her rythm. Serena also played a third-setter at the AO in the first (?) round and look at her final result :)
I won't mind so much if she loses but I'll never count her out.
