as a spectator...

PARIS - Martina Hingis has happily swapped sitting atop women’s tennis with sitting on a horse named Laetitia.

“I play all kinds of other sports,” the five-time Grand Slam champion told Tuesday’s L’Equipe after roaming the grounds of Roland Garros as a spectator Monday.

Hingis, who ruled women’s tennis mostly from 1997 to 2001, has said her pro tennis career is probably over due to persistent foot injuries, and she’s keeping busy with other activities.

She rides her horse every day and competes in equestrian events, she spent the winter skiing and has a bandaged left arm to show for her skateboarding, L’Equipe quoted Hingis as saying. The 22-year-old has been living quietly near Zurich, attending college to perfect her English.

“I’m doing everything I can to stay physically and mentally fresh,” said Hingis, who said earlier this year she was ready to retire after operations to her ankles in 2001 and 2002.

“The chapter is closed. I can’t play anymore,” she told L’Equipe. “Life goes on. I don’t train at all anymore. I live in the future and not in the past.”

One upside is that her testy relations with other players have improved, said Hingis.

Monday night, Hingis said she bumped into No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt and his girlfriend, No. 4 Kim Clijsters, at an ice-cream shop on the Champs-Elysées. They hugged.

“Relations have become a lot more friendly,” Hingis said. AP
