View Full Version : Mary Carillo has a tennis playing son?

May 29th, 2003, 01:43 AM
Today she mentioned that her son sometimes trains at Bolleteri's and he called her( Mary) once when Serena and him were in the weight room together. I wonder if his tennis is user friendly like Martina N described his mom' game.? Does anyne know anything about him? Mary doesn't seem like the type that would have kids. Guess I was fooled( Like usual)

Mary is married with 2 kids I believe (boy + girl)-- and lives in Naples Florida ..Her son is about 15, so I suppose he plays tennis.

ROFL! I don't know anything about her son but I do know she's married with 3 kids, I believe. I can't believe her son's that old, though. Cuz in the early to mid 90's when she took her 'break' from commentating or something, she said she needed to raise her kids.

from a google search: She was born March 15, 1957 in Queens, N.Y., and lives in Naples, Fla. with her husband, Bill Bowden, and their two children.

another search, as found on http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/tennis/2001/wimbledon/news/2001/07/06/carillo_three/ :
I adore this event but I won't stay around for the big payoff this weekend. I miss my kids. Neither Anthony, almost 14, nor Rachel the 9-year-old, watches tennis on TV unless, "There's nothing else on." To say they don't keep up with my career is putting it mildly, though I made the event more sporting for my boy last week.

He was at Bollettieri's basketball camp ("Can I stay here for the rest of my life, Mom?") and I guess he caught my voice on TV while he was on the lunch line. He told the kid next to him that the woman talking was his mom. Of course the kid didn't believe him; who ever believes what they hear on a buffet line?

But when I called him that night he started screaming, "Mom! Aren't you my mom? Tell this kid!" The kid got on the phone. "Yes, I said. That's my kid. But whatever the bet is, don't pay him." Anthony was so close to thinking I was finally good for something. Ah, well. I'll feed him when I get home.

yeah, unh-hunh I'm the bomb... say what? :p

its safe to say that Mary C is the only and only again i say only did you people hear me, the only commentator out that with a sense of humor. not only does she take the game serious, but at the same time she has laughs and can make laughs, and makes watching a match actually enjoyable.

unlike Pam Shriver or Mary Jo, who constantly talk negative (particuarlly with Serena and Venus) about a players game when they have made 1 error, they will go on for abou 10 minutes about that 1 mistake and tell us what they need to do to adjust. But personally what they fail to realize is, people have their own games, if the like to hit the ball and keep they head up then do it. If you are wondering where i come from, every time a player misses a ball, Mary Jo's excuse everytime for them is, she just lifted her headup a bit while hitting that ball. for that 1.

yes, that is correct SS. Mary is hilarious and her puns are what make me look forward to waking up at 8 AM to watch espn when I know my faves have already played or will play after 12 PM. that and Chris Fowler's voice. I don't have a crush on him or anything but I enjoy his voice like I enjoy Stuart Scott's, Bob Ley's and Dan Patrick's. :o

Generally, whenever you get two women or a group of women together in conversation, they tend to fall into this vortex of bitching and gossiping (of course, this isn't true of ALL women). So when you put Pam and Mary Joe together, the conversation and commentating is going to get a little on the negative side. It's easy for women to compliment other women, but they're just as likely to tear each other down.

Mary Carillo seems to be of a different species. She has a great voice for commentating, and her perspective and sense of humour is great to listen to.

I really enjoy her commnetary. She's seems to be the fairest of them all when commenting on the players.

Mary is hilarious AND a great commentator. None of the other commentators seem to have both attributes, especially the women. When Shriver tries to be funny she just comes across as idiotic. NBC has made a great choice by picking her to replace Evert.

I heard she left her husband and ran off with a woman!

She and her husband separated but they are back together. I don't know about the other part. ;)

Hi Irma. What's going on with Worldcrossing?

I heard the same thing as Irma.

I must agree Mary C is as funny as they come. And considering the commentators they have on ESPN we need her. Imagine Cliff all by himself? Or Patrick? And we all know the horror of Pam and Mary :o
