Best result at Roland Garros...3rd Round in 4 of the last 5 years! In fact.. in her past 5 Grand Slams she has lost in the 3rd Round! That's very consistent but hopefully THIS time she will break the barrier and go further, and what a great way to do it in Paris!! ALLEZ NATHALIE!! :)

This thread is boring. Why do half of the posters have the same person on their avatar?
What do you think of this picture (from the Roland-Garros website)? Isn't she just lovely?

It's really nice too, as all the other photos I suppose ;), but I prefer the one with the trophy, because Nathalie liked it too ;)

The interview on the Roland-Garros website - not particularly illuminating but worth reading :)

Q. That match against a player who never misses anything has been a bit tough, but you can be happy with the outcome.
A. Yes, I knew what to expect. Last time I played against her, she did not play so well. This time, at some moments, I felt that she was really confident. She's a really good claycourt player. That's why the match was tough sometimes. You're right, I can be happy with the outcome.

Q. There were many breaks during the first set, and then none during the rest of the match. How do you explain that?
A. You're right, it's weird, now that you mention it, I realize that it was like that. But at the beginning of the match, I wasn't really into it yet. I wasn't focused enough on my serve. I thought that before breaking her, I had to hold my own serve. But later, I served better, I paid more attention to my serve itself, I was more focused on that part of my game. But on court, I did not think of [what you're mentioning].

Q. That will to come to the net, is it becoming more and more natural, especially against such opponents whom you have to move around?
A. It is during the first two rounds that I can put it up most easily, while my opponents do not play too fast and leave me time to organize my tactics. I'm happy to have come often to the net during the first two matches. That way it will be ready for the third. That's where I win a number of points, even though... I won't play serve-and-volley, obviously, but after that it's about getting as many points as possible at the net and besides, it's fun for me so...!

Q. It's the fifth consecutive time you reach the third round in a Slam. Is that a stage you must improve? How do you see it?
A. There may certainly be a stage upon which to improve.

Q. Do you think about it?
A. You can't help thinking of it, it's been several times I reached the third round, I am fairly consistent, I'd like to go further, I already did that before so I know that it is possible. Serious things start now, I had two good warm-up rounds and now, against Davenport, it won't be easy but those are the matches for which I play this tournament. I'm really eager to reach my best level for that round and win that match, for sure.

Q. How do you see that match?
A. I have never defeated her but then, she's not quite as consistent as she was 2 or 3 years ago when she was in top form. She's capable of playing very good matches. I met her coach, he seemed happy with the play she's been playing. If I really play well, I could disturb her. I haven't really thought about it yet and I don't want to do that now because I'm playing doubles later today and there's another day in between. But I'll be at 100 percent on Saturday. No problem.

Q. At the start of the year, you said that you wanted to win your first title. You've achieved that. Now, to get a good victory here with Davenport, it's a dream opportunity.
A. Yes, it's a good opportunity. I'll play it the best that I can, but I'll play it with a free mind. Of course, anyway I've prepared myself for that kind of match, but if it isn't the one, there'll be others.

Q. Have you analyzed why you failed here several times in the third round? Was is merely by chance, or a mental thing?
R. It is no chance, I've reached the fourth round in other Slams. There were close matches last year, I lost 7-5 in the third set, the year before was almost the same. Each time the matches were close. If the same thing happens this time, I'll know what it is, but I don't think that it will stop me mentally.

Q. Last time you played a top player was in Rome two weeks ago, against Serena. You were washed up because you had played a 3-and-a-half-hour match the day before. But you went for it during the first three games, it was great and then that was it. Do you feel up to those girls Able to play that fast?
A. I know that I am able to do it. But, on the long-term, I sometimes manage to do that, against Kim or Justine but not against the two or three players we were talking about. I know that I can play that fast but the problem is to keep the pace during the whole match. I do it for a few games but I want to do it for a whole match.

Q. This time you must keep it up during two sets.
A. That's it.

 Nathalie 3 / 6 5 / 7 .....

May 31st, 2003, 02:56 PM
I'm very happy for Nathalie..she played a very solid match but Lindsay was just too good. Lindsay only won 8 MORE PONTS then Nathalie! So it was very close and IMO if it had gone to a 3rd set then Nathalie could have won! Here are her stats:

71% first serve
2 aces, 1 DF
20 Winners, 35 UE's

GOOD LUCK IN DUBS AND AT WIMBY NATHALIE! Maybe next time u can FINALLY get past that bloody 3rd round!!

May 31st, 2003, 03:59 PM
Well, I don't want to spoil the party but I am not happy ;) I'd almost feel like scolding her if she wasn't so disappointed herself. Lindsay deserved to win, Nathalie didn't really. She played some beautiful tennis and for that very reason she had the little extra in her which should have allowed her to win that second set, and quite possibly the match. Of course she proved that she has the talent to go further, and I am confident that she will soon, but she should not have wasted this opportunity.
Once again, I'm writing this only because she's not reading - were she there, I'd rather comfort her  But she has a fiancé for this - I only wish he looked a bit less dull - oh well :D

May 31st, 2003, 05:00 PM
Oh Nathalie

I hope one day she realizes her full talent and will enter the top ten (and perhaps #1 ;)). Better luck next year, Nathalie!

There's a very good video interview of Nathalie in French on the RG website:
http://www.rolandgarros.com/fr_FR/news/interviews/2003053115245155291207d9a4f52600256d3700495a94.htm l
She's really too cute :(

Jun 4th, 2003, 06:04 PM
Chosen excerpt #1:
Q- You said on Thursday that it was a good occasion to go further. Seeing how Davenport was moving, does it make your regrets even bigger?
A- Are you trying to say that I played a weakened opponent? ;) ... Well, i shows that you have to be on the court to know. I think that I was facing someone who was playing really well.

Q- What, in your opinion, do you still lack to go a step further?
A- Maybe I am not enough of an opportunist in such moments, the way I can be against lesser opponents.

Jun 4th, 2003, 06:07 PM
Another one (not literally quoted):
I might not be very powerful - I do all that I can, I train in fitness rooms... I am what I am, I can't help it... (That bit is just too cute ;)) I think that I have other qualities... But I served - at some point, I served almost at 100 mph, I thought that it wasn't too bad ;)

Jun 4th, 2003, 09:53 PM
Too bad Nathalie and Emilie lost the doubles too, but this was a pretty good Roland Garros for her :)

:bounce: Nathalie :bounce:
