View Full Version : Belgians I Have A ? About Uni

I'm seriously thinking of taking a year off of work to finish my degree at uni, and have found Vesalius College in Brussels. I don't even know if I can afford to study abroad, but I'd really like to at least get info on it. I've found their website and have looked around. That's answered most of my ?s, but does any know what quality this Uni is? I mean, my grades won't even transfer back as I'll just get credit but no grade as far as my final transcript will say. Is it highly regarded or kind of a crap school? Thanks Belgies! :wavey:

http://www.vub.ac.be/VECO/aveco/index.htm ..if this is the website, then it's a part of the VUB.

then Josh will be able to help you I think :o

I can only talk about the quality of the "mother" university (the VUB). It's regarded as a decent university, but there are some subjects that are know for it's lower level. Dunno what you are planning to do?

f.e. if you're considering to do genetics engineering, you'd better go to Gent (www.rug.ac.be), if you're planning to finish international politics, Leuven (www.kuleuven.ac.be) may be better.

But please consider the education level in Belgium is pretty high, i've seen enough people having troubles with our system (especially spaniards, dunno what's your nationality) .

One downside is Gent & Leuven are Dutch-speaking cities, so you won't be able to practise French. The Vesalius College is part of a Flemish university, but it's situated in Brussels, so you'd be able to practise French as much as you'd like.

for mathematics the vub is the best together with ghent though....then antwerp, and leuven is by far weaker....in Louvain they're even better there at least they have Borceux.....

just a correction:
Leuven = KULEUVEN (french name Louvain)
Louvain => Louvain-La-Neuve (the french university originally part of Leuven)

they're weak in research....the courses are hard (I would even say as hard) in any university(though at the vub they help you more at first to make you understand what mathematics is about....that's the main reason more people fail for example in Leuven, not the level of the classes....) and of course when you tried first in any place it becomes easier to do the same in another one...that's common sense :)

nah, Tine, i'm pretty sure this is wrong. Gent has more cheap rooms for students, we've got slightly more facilities for sport students,...

What we lack is student-movement facilities, but there we are making improvements ("De Brug" (student home) wil move to a 4 million EURO new building (with a great infrastructure). We don't need to pay kot-taxes too ;).

tine:
- sport is way larger in gent (check out the facilities, my sis was in Leuven, so i know about the Sportkot)
- internet is better in Gent, exept for those night-pc-rooms (which are due to come in Gent next year, afaik). We've got better systems here (arc is improving). And KotNet is way to slow, and it's not usefull (many ports are locked, more than in Gent)... here we share a Telenet connection. More expensive, but way better...
- advalvas is on the internet in almost every faculty.
- no one needs a newsgroup :p (system does exist here, but no one uses it, people use their own systems, and that has become a tradition).

I was looking for an address of someone who worked at the RUG, was unable to find her (though I noticed they finally changed the website in Gent), in Leuven you can anyone right away without a prob. All the forms, enrolling for Uni, using the Uni plotters, it's all done online. Students can rent computers and laptops.
Our student card is also our library card, we can order our books online form the library and they let you know when you can pick it up, etc, etc...

As for sport, for €15/year we can use all sport facitilities, swimming pool, tennis courts, take lessons in all sorts of sports, etc. I don't think it's that cheap in Gent.

It was different when I started but right now there's a shortage of rooms in Leuven! One student room was torn down and Tobback came up with that stupid law which made it illegal to build new student rooms where there weren't any before.

at prices that are unreasonably high... we were thinking to do the same (we had the budget), but it was not usefull... when renting for a year, you can almost buy the pc for the same price...

Internet is way better in Gent, Koen... i've been on a kot, and it sucks... you can't get any speed... it's like surfing on ISDN & way worse.
And it's not all in in Leuven, you needed to pay 7000 BEF/year last year for the entire building, i know... but you can't do much... i pay less, and i get full access...

SAP ain't the responsability of the ARC, at least not of those guys who are dealing with pc-rooms etc.

Koen: i've worked on the student servers, and i know it ain't the best, but if you compare the surfing-comfort for students, things are better in Gent... way better. And at least we could fully configure own own servers

Stress on 'Uni' in your case. In Leuven, it's not only the dorms that are connected but ALL rooms, including the privately owned ones. And the speed depends on the number of students on a modem.

Woohooo fight between Leuven and Gent! :bounce:

But to get back to the question people , Vesalius College is a very good place to study. It's very small, only about 500 students I believe but this also ensures close contact with the teachers. Foreign students are immediately accepted in the student population of the VUB and they also have their own "society" which offers them help and information and also organises lots of activities.

The degrees of the College are accredited by the British Open University. Most students are Americans and Spaniards, at least most people I know seem to be of those nationalities.

The College is situated just next to the VUB and the ULB (Flemish and French university). Student rooms are nearby, even in the same building. And the city centre of Brussels is easily accessible by public transport (subway, bus, tram and train).

Well thanks! I'm just compiling info now to see if it's something I'm gonna do or not. I want to finish my degree and want to live abroad for a bit... so becoming a student again seems the best combination to do both. I'm checking out 1 in London, 1 in Paris (probably not gonna go there), and this one. I have distant relatives in Belgium that could help me with transition - so that's why I was thinking of that, but they don't know anything about this uni. Thanks again!
