Sveta was voted Most Impressive Newcomer after picking up two titles last year. This year has been a bit of a letdown but she could easily gather steam in Roma.

31 (34) L. GRANVILLE 1007.25
32 (31) F. SCHIAVONE 960.00
33 (36) M. SERNA 960.00
34 (35) T. TANASUGARN 951.00
35 (33) T. PANOVA 925.00
36 (41) S. KUZNETSOVA 921.75 ROME 3R 87
-----------------------------------------------------
xx (39) V. RUANO PAS 745.50 ROME 2R 29
xx (52) E. LOIT 728.00 ROME 3R 100
xx (65) T. PISNIK 627.50 ROME 3R 94.5
xx (79) C. BLACK 541.50 ROME 3R 78.5
xx (88) N. PETROVA 498.25 ROME 3R 81

If one of those bottom five girls goes very deep, they could grab that spot as well, but it looks like Sveta is only competing with herself to get seeded.

She next plays Myskina, whom she beat at Indian Wells 6-4 6-7 6-3. Repeating that feat will give her 68 more points, juuuust pushing her up to #32, and a seeding at Roland Garros.

If she does, it's a pity that Schiavone and Serna won't be seeded. I wish they could unseed players like Stevenson and Granville.

didnt she almost beat Kim Clijsters last year?
so assuming she wins this match, she'd giver her a fight atleast right?

Sveta can hang with anyone these days, I would say.

Hurley, can you confirm Serna's points? In other thread it says another thing...

Serna is on 958

Hurley I think used the 300 points for this event but its been corrected to 275.

so winner of rd 1 gets 23 and not 25

#32 is the last one to get seeded assuming there are no withdrawals... Venus, Lena B. and Lena D. are all under question as well as Monica.

This is the second time the WTA has put the wrong points on their draws in the last month  :fiery:  You'd think they'd understand their own systems

Sorry about that, then :)

omg...Sveta can beat Nastya on any surface. Bring that 32nd seed! :D

Yea Sveta.

I prefer her to Zvonereva, but am I the only one who thinks they look remarkably alike. I saw them playing against each other, both with caps on their head and such similar games.... I kind of got dizzy.

No problem! ;). BTW, Sveta lost, so she won't be seeded.

Yes. :p Sveta has a face like a bull. I'm not trying to be mean, I think she's super...but she does. Vera is a cherub. But they both have stocky frames, so I'll give you that.

Yes, Sveta lost, surprisingly to the Russian guys above, but I thought it could go either way. First big QF for Nastya since Australia, which she needs...but Sveta needed this win more.

I hope Nastya can win one or two more matches here... ;)

Or three!

Sveta unseeded could be better than Sveta as #32... I'd rather she didn't meet Serena or Venus or Kim in the third round, as is generally the fate of the #32 seed. Nastya needed the win more, to cement her status as a valid top tenner.

Eggy made that point too...statistically, it doesn't wash. Now she has even greater odds of meeting a high seed in one of her first TWO rounds...yes, she'd have a guaranteed match with one of them in the third round, but I really don't see any advantage at all in not being seeded. When you're a seed, you'll have to beat no one higher-ranked than you for two matches. Unseeded, you're almost definitely not guaranteed that luxury.

Could she draw a Maleeva in the first or second round and boot her ass out? Yes, but then next match she'll have Zvonareva. Or vice versa. It makes any path much more difficult.

Anyway, even with this win Nastya won't be in the Top Ten...and even with a loss she would have been after Roland Garros anyway, with Dokic losing her QF points from last year after she draws Sveta first round :p

of couse, it's fun to be an unseeded threat,
maybe the draw comes out with Sveta
facing Venus in 1R who pulled right before,
than she might be seeded #33 and face LL
and garantee a path to face #32 seed in 3R,
than 13-16 in 4R.........
which makes her chance more likely

but if she is seeded, she might face
Magui Serena etc. in 1R......
which will make her life miserable,

so it's all about the luck of the draw...:D

I don't do 'statistically' :p

High seeds in the first two rounds are much more vulnerable than after they've got two matches under their belt. If she's going to face Venus, I'd rather it was in round 1 than round 3... no shame in losing, and given the rate of Sveta's progress the difference has negligible significance. In any case, there aren't all that many high seeds Sveta can't handle. The Williams/JHH/Capriati nexus, obviously... but below the top 7, she can handle anyone.

(Except Nastya. As today has just proved.)

This win is important for Nastya, because it provides that much more of a cushion when all her grass points from last year come off. Incidentally, what is her schedule? I'm sure I read that she was going to play Strasbourg, and I hope she doesn't. I don't think she should play two grass court warm-ups either... last year she was exhausted by Wimbledon.

She should be fine playing Strasbourg, since she needs to win just one round in Paris to significantly improve her ranking. If she decides not to, I won't cry about it, but she plays best with confidence, and if she comes out of a good Rome into a good Strasbourg, she'll go into RG excited. I think. :D

She's not committed for B-ham, no...just Eastbourne. A wise move IMO.

Also tired. She doesn't have anything to prove at the smaller tourneys now, and I don't think she can sustain three good weeks in a row.

Hurley ..... if she was seeded 32
then it guaranteed match in rd3 vs one of top 8 seeds

now there's 96 places in the draw where she could fit into.
yes there's a big chance she could get a seed in rd1 but its less chance to get one of the top 8.
Playing a lower seed could mean anyone, she might get Stevenson.

Hurley
May 15th, 2003, 06:45 PM
Yeah but see...if she plays Stevenson (25-32) that means she'll have to play a 1-8 seed in the third round ANYWAY!

So instead of having to play people ranked lower than her en route to a 3rd round meeting with a top seed...she'll have to play a seed en route to that very same 3rd round meeting with a top seed.

Yeah but see...if she plays Stevenson (25-32) that means she'll have to play a 1-8 seed ANYWAY!

But at least she'll get Stevenson's bonus points.

Anyway, isn't this all slightly redundant now she's not going to be a seed? ;)

Well, I am right, you guys just aren't mathematical. It's very simple.

And actually "United States of Whatever" was originally on "Sifl and Olly" from...I want to say 1999.

well, last I checked, Nastya was a pretty good player in her own right, huh?

Sveta served for the second set, but blew it.

It's better this way, Sveta doesn't need the help & she might get seeded anyway. Or a better draw unseeded. I'm not surprised Nastya won, she is better then people give her credit for & has room to grow.

Seriously, I mean it's not as if Sveta lost to Tammy on clay or something. At least Nastya has a win over a top 10 player on clay, something which Sveta doesn't have on any surface.

Tennista, it was 6-4 7-5.
