View Full Version : best books, overrated books

The "fifty best books" thread made me think of books that you'd recommend and touted books that you'd warn people to stay away from.

Books that I'd recommend:
"The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde - This is one of my favorite books and for those who can't commit, it's really short - just a novella actually

"The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoevsky - the first few chapters are sooo boring, but once you get past that, it's really good

"Crime and Punishment" by Dostoevsky

"Lolita" by Nabakov - beautifully written

"Cry to Heaven" by Anne Rice - well researched, unique story, interesting characters, enthralling stories, erotic, and beautifully written - her best work

"Wuthering Heights" - I know that a lot of people on the other thread disliked this book, but I thought it was really good.

"To Kill a Mockingbird" - just very good all around

"1984" - About 4/5 of the book is really good, though the ending just blows.

Nicholas Sparks books - His writing style is terrible and his stories are just sappy and trite.

"Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy - booooooooooooooooring.

Oops. I suppose I should have expected that since he's sold millions of books. Well, maybe my Mom and I are just oddballs.

What has he written?

he's written a bunch of stuff. The one's that come to mind are "The Notebook", "Message in a Bottle", "A Walk to Remember". The last two were made into movies and I think he has another movie based on one of his books coming up.

"A Walk to Remember" is just the sweetest, saddest book ever.

When I saw the movie, I cried the WHOLE time because I knew everything that was happening since I had previously read the book...

I loved Anne Rice's "Witching hour" series. And of course the "Vampire Chronicles."

"Lessons from the light" (cant remember the author though)
Monica's book "From Fear to Victory" is good.
Michael Mewshaw's "Ladies of the Court" was very interesting.
Steven King's "The Shinning"
"Misery" was a good book
