View Full Version : Does Anybody Have Any Major Phobias?

Crazy Canuck

By major, I mean panic attack inducing.

You see, I used to be a little scared of heights, and a little scared of spiders. The heights thing started to get worse, but sort of peaked when I was about 16 and has plateaued since then. If I'm high up and on stairs that you can see right down to the ground on, I breath faster, and get slightly anxious. But it's nothing that I can't control, so it's no big deal.

However, I tried to go to bed like an hour and a half ago, but there was a huge assed spider on my wall, that was just out of reach. So instead of acting like a normal human being, I spent the next hour pacing around, slowly removing things from my bedroom (pillow, a book, etc.), shaking, crying, grabbing books to aim and throw at it then being too scared to go through with it, and sitting in the hallway while occasionally checking on it to make sure that it didn't move out of sight, or I wouldn't go into my room for the next day or something. So finally I had to wake my mom up, because I couldn't control everything that I was doing anymore, and I'd be bawling about this for 20 minutes straight. So here I am, 21 years old, having to wake up my mom at 130am to kill a fucking spider! A spider! She was not impressed at all, especially since I was so upset that I could hardly talk, and she had trouble figuring out what I was asking her to do.

Now, I realize that this is NOT normal behavior, and the only reason I'm up now is that I'm still shaking. However, it's also involuntary, and it super sucks.

So tell me, has anybody else had this problem before? ;)

Hey now... don't laugh. I'm still anxious and shaking and it's been dead for 20 minutes now.

There wasn't anybody I knew on MSN, so I had to rant about in somewhere in the hopes that I might feel a little better.

Certainly not to this degree, but I have a horrible fear of water.

Well, maybe not the water, but what's IN the water. Even thinking about the ocean makes me break out in chills. *shudders now* There's no amount of money you could pay me to go on a cruise, or a fun little boat ride on the lake. Just the idea of any part of me being submerged in water, even just my ankles terrifies me.

And word about spiders...I used to be really bad...in fact, I'm sure there's a nasty black spider hiding out in my room somewhere, but I lost track of it. So *shrug* I don't worry until it lands on my head and starts stinging.

hah, me too (the water thing). in planes if i get scared at all, it's being scared of surviving a crash and having to float holding on to wreckage and having stuff circling under me...

oh man, hadn't even gotten to intercontinental flights
I'd love to go to Europe or Oz one day..but I'd need some extra strength valium to survive. Sharks are a HUGE fear....I can't watch Jaws, and whenever it's on, my parents taunt me and switch to it immediately when I come in the room. Bastards :p

well human beings do too but let's keep it small this time;)

Melanie2

Jaws doesn't scare me, but real footage of sharks does. The way the jaws kind of flop forward and the eyes roll back... I once had a full-fledged sobbing panic attack when I was sea kayaking... not attractive.

Also, i have a kind of phobia I suppose of like mummified, partly decomposed people, well, i guess everyone does, but I have have nightmares about them sometimes. Is tha a phobia? Is a phobia only an irrational fear?

Crazy Canuck
May 14th, 2003, 06:07 AM
Irma, I absolutely terrified of bees, wasps, and anything else in that general family. But not to this degree.. I just run around and act ridiculous when they are about ;)

I'm only scared of some spiders, in some situations. I think it's when they invade my personal space that I get scared.

I've never gotten that bad before though

Those creatures reside at my dads house in Vegas. That's why i don't like going there. And there are a bunch of crickets too, which scare me to death :o

I used to be afraid of animals. But I'm not anymore. I mean I'm on better terms with them. I can go and pet them, actually.
But, I'm afraid of the sudden movements of little animals, i.e. birds.
And I'm afraid of the fish in the sea.... Cannot swim because of them!

The little spider will be just as afraid of you as you are of it. Besides the spider being nasty, ugly, hairy and not to mention nastyhttp://www.smilies.nl/eek7.gif it's completely harmless.

You have the ability to throw a tvset on it. What can a spider do to you?

My mom once locked all the rooms in the house because there were new born baby mice in the middle of my brothers bedroom. She was so freaked that she left the house in a panic. This ofcourse happened when we were living in Suriname.

I guess being confonted by bees and flying cockroaches the size of your pinky finger, snakes and caimans (small crocodile-like animals) make western spiders look like ants.

I'm afraid of snakes. I hate to see them in reality, I close my eyes and pull my feet up if I see them on tv, I hate pics of themand rubber snakes that children play with. I'm seriously not joking, but I'm afraid of everything that is snake, fake or not.

Scary rrrreading in this thread. I, me always trying to be so tough can´t enter a room if there is a dog inside  I know it is irrational, but I have to be in company with someone to enter a room where it is a dog.
I can panick or vomit if I do so unaware, and then discovers the dog.
A psykologist friend has offered his help, but I rather have my phobias alone and exclusive. Funny enough the psykologists dog doesn´t scare me at all :)

I'm well aware that just about any spider I come across here will be totally harmless. That really isn't the point. That point is that the response in this case was totally involuntary. You can know in the back of your head that there is nothing it can do, but can do shit all about how you react.

The thought of spiders doesn't bother me at all. Seeing pictures of spiders doesn't really bother me either. Small spiders don't bother me, spiders in boats don't bother me. As long as they are where they are "supposed" to be, it's fine. It's when they "invade" my personal space that I get a little uptight. What happened last night doesn't usually happen.

I have the same phobias as you. Heights and spiders. I took this part of your quote because that really bothers me. :D I think people are not sensitive enough to things like this just because they themselves dont understand it or are not fearful of it. I mean yeah she killed it for you but like you said she wasn't impressed and sounds like she had the attitude you were being ridiculous. Seeing a large spider is paralysing to me and it takes me a very long time to feel ok afterward.

I have a good friend who takes it seriously and kills them for me though and doesn't make me feel bad about it. Well.. most of the time ;)

im fucking terrified of wasps. bee i dont care about... but wasps... ugh.

when i was 4, i was in the pool with my mom and we were by the edge talking to my abuela... well smart me put my hands under the edge and two wasps attacked my eyes. i went under water, but they just kept attacking. my mom had to kill them and take them off of me. my face was all swollen... luckily my family is full of doctors and nurses so i was ok.

but now i have this paranoia of wasps and ANYTHING by my eyes. if someones hand looks like its coming towards my eyes, i freak out.

also im not fond of coyotes, wolves, wild dogs... wild cats, mountain lions, etc. i go hiking and camping a lot in the mountains and have had several close encounters.

I don't know if this has an official name to it, but I have a phobia of a horrific physical tragedy happening to myself like getting in a car accident, having someone burn my face with a pot, getting shot at an ATM, being on the 8th floor of some building as it goes up in flames--not like it's all I ever think about, but this stuff is what I think about often.

Yes, it is very irritating. This is the first time it's happened so badly, but in the more minor cases where she was already awake and I asked her to kill it, she would roll her eyes at me :(

My friends don't get the heights thing though. I was helping my friend move, and to do so we have to walk up a 5 flight fire escape. Which would be fine, if it wasn't for those stairs that let you see all the way to the ground. So I was moving really slowly, especially over this one part...they just looked at me funny :(

Yep - spiders and roaches are the worst for me. YUCK!!!! But when I see one - I dont run though - I have to kill it immediately. But I am irked for awhile after it is gone. I am always afraid that there is a spider in my bed. I have a ritual of shaking out the sheets every night before I lay down. I also shake out my shoes before putting them on. And my clothes.:) Ok - I have a spider phobia!

I came back home to find about 50 wasps in my room, they'd built a nest, I couldn't get rid of them and had to wait for them all to die :o They survived for about 2 months and throught that time, I couldn't go into my room and ended up sleeping downstairs, lol.

i wanna know why they didnt get thrown off the planet (or so to speak) with the other dinosaurs!!!!! my friends tried to take me to that Australia Zoo a couple of years ago...u know...Steve Irwin's one?
-i flatly refused-

and i hate elevators!!! small cramped spaces with LOTS of people are just weird....though i found a pretty ok 'cure' fun things to do in an elevator-i just thought of these when i was in one and my fear slowly went away:

*When there’s only you and one other person in the elevator, tap them on the shoulder and then pretend it wasn’t you.

*Push all the buttons and pretend they gave you an electric shock, smile, and go back for more

*Ask if you can push the buttons for people, but push the wrong ones

*Call the Psychic Hotline while you’re in the lift and ask them if they know what floor you’re on
*Hold the doors open and say your waiting for a friend, after a while, let the doors shut and then say, “Hi (insert friend's name), how’s your day been?”

*Drop a pen and wait until someone goes to pick it up, them scream, “That’s MINE!!!!”

*Lay down the Twister mat and ask people to play

*Call out, “Group Hug!” and enforce it

*Stand silently and motionless in the corner, facing the wall, without getting off

i got these of some website ages ago
try thinking of them when ur in a lift-it worked for me! :)
sorry this is so long-you can delete it if you want

my rambling stops now:)
