View Full Version : Who has the best return of serve?

In the '90's, people said Monica Seles had the best return-of-serve in the history of women's tennis. I recall Mary Carillo said this, and Nick Bolletieri once couldn't praise it enough.

But with the power servers of today, especially Venus and Serena, serves -- to me, at least -- seem harder to return than ever.

Is Monica still the best returner? If not, who is? Do you think she truly was at one time?

Also, while I'm on the subject, let me toss this out: I've lost count of the number of times I've heard TV commentators point out that if Monica (or anyone, I guess) would back up, she'd give herself more time to hit the Williams sisters' serves. None of them seem to realize that doing so would also open up the angle, and therefore nothing would be achieved. Am I off for thinking that?

Serena is a machine of returning serve, no errors and really tough to ace her.

Serena Williams, have you seen how she returns some hard deliveries of Venus, Lindsay? Not to mention how she cracks second serves!

I have seen Serena return winners of Xavier's serve and Iroda's mixed doubles partner.

Serena has the best followed closely by Monica.

Serena, no question.

"I love returning serves. It's my specialty."
-- Serena J. Williams

If you want to see a match where she kills the serve of her opponent, take any of the past four grand slam finals and SF's vs. Lindsay at the Family Circle Cup. She kills.

I'd take Martina Hingis, extremely consistant and almost always deep, very few winners but .....

Serena (has to be rated the most feared )
Lindsay(used to be her specialty
Monica(mobility has weakend this shot for her also facing bigger servers)
Venus(Great reach, hard to ace/consistant
Jenn(very consistant)
Hingis(most consistant. if it's not an ace it's coming back)

Serena, Jen, and Monica

Serena has the best return of serve right now, Venus, Capriati, Davenport (although not as lethal as she used to be) and Monica have good returns. Hingis was also pretty good in her time.

Pretty good? Nobody else spit back the biggest serves better or more consistantly than Hingis. She frustrated M. Phil., by consistantly returning his bombs in Hopman Cup.

My votes would be to Serena, Jen, Venus, and Monica... The best would easily be Serena.

Serena has the best forehand crosscourt return.

Venus has the best backhand return

Lindsay has the best return from BOTH sides, followed closely by Jen and Monica

I can live with that.

Martina's return was underrated. If there were statistics, she'd probably be at or very near the top of returns back in play.

Elena Dementieva.. For a player with such a pathetic serve she wins awful lot of matches and makes a lot of breaks against the best sevrers..

THough the question of the best returner is hardly a correct question. For instance, they say that Agassi is the best returner of serve. But is he the best returner of , say, Sampras's serve? I'd say, he is one of the worst. So, I think, serves and returns can match well, or not..

Being the best returner of Pete's serve, is only relevant when he plays Pete. Andre returns serve better than anyone.

We now return to WTA tennis.

When Lindsay was on she was lethal off both wings, she's lost a bit of confidence, and has slipped in this catagory.

of all time, lethal from both sides- monica, chrissy, lindsay, and jenn
forehand- steffi, serena, and jenn
backhand- venus (sha BAM!) monica, and chrissy

right now, from both sides- serena, monica, lindsay, jenn
forehand- serena, lindsay, jenn
backhand- venus, monica, henin, and mauresmo

monica is not the best returner anymore (only on certain days :) ), but just the fact that everyone must put her in their top 5 (unless you lie to yourself) is a strong testament to how well she did in her own era. she adapted extrememly well to huge serves, and she is certainly the best ever... serena would need to be much more consistent, which i know is more difficult in these booming serve days, but she would improve her angles to level 1 (invented by monica)

Serena, inconsistent? She's won 4 straight Slams, and 10 of her last 15 events :)

I agree with DA FOREHAND 100%. Hingis' return was the best. As for now I'd say Lindsay. Sure Serena has a great return, but she still flubs the easy ones too much. Monica Seles can hardly get her racket on a big serve so her return isn't that great. Capriati has a wicked return, most consistent, very powerful. Actually Capriati has the best return, I change my vote.

Also, Venus' return is a shadow of what it used to be.

Monica Seles - she wins matches still by just her return game alone. If her serve is off that day, but her return game is on - she still has a chance. Its not as effective as it was in the 90's - because of the power now a days. But one return to win it all......I would bet it on Seles.

i do not know how u guys defines as good returner...

Serena goes for it whenever she returns serve but could result in tonns of unforced errors

Jenn on the other hand goes for consistency...instead of going for outright winners she prefers to just put the ball back or set up for her next point...pretty high percentage n consistent

i have seen how Seles punishes Hingis for her weak 2nd serve so... she is good no doubt

unfortunately I agree with you

i actually havent seen much of Venus pre-2001

but she isnt that great a returner when compared to lindsay, monica, serena

shes just hard to ace and goes for forced errors rather than outright winners

Venus' return has always been the same. She goes for a deep hard return, not looking to hit close to the sidelines for winners. She likes to push the opponent backwards by hitting close to the baseline. She usually aims for the opponents feet so the serve is right back at them as soon as they finish their serving motion.

Monica can hardly get her racket on a big serve?? Did you see her match against Venus at the LA championship? She was hitting winners off of Venus' first serve. Sure, her mobility hampers her, but her reactions are fantastic. That's why, in answer to Spirit, I think it makes sense for her to stand so close.

Serena is definitely the best right now.

Venus's return of service isn't as great as Serena's, but good thing that forced errors earn same amount of points as winners. ;)

wasn`t martina hingis given that title back in 97-00, cos she constructed the point so well from her return of serve.
