:hearts: that pic of her fans!

I was following the score on line as best as I could while at work.

Set 1: Myriam broke Monica in the very first game. They each held serve the rest of the set.

Set 2: Monica broke Myriam early, then again in the last game.

Set 3: Monica broke Myriam early, then lost her own serve at 4-2, then broke again to go up 5-3 and served out the match.

There is a pic of her on the website.

Here is a brief wire story:

Monica Seles needed three sets to get by 46th-ranked Myriam Casanova on Tuesday in the first round of the US$1.3 million Italian Open.

The 10th-seeded Seles appeared stunned by the Swiss player's powerful strokes in the first set, but then showed her experience and court savy to pull out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Seles, who won this key clay-court tuneup for the French Open in 1990 and 2000, received constant encouragement from the Foro Italico crowd.

After her comeback was complete, a group of fans clad in U.S. flags presented the nationalized American with a dozen red roses.

Casanova, who was making her Rome debut, produced a series of aces and winners in the first set. But as the match wore on, Seles began to win longer rallies.

Sounds like a good match! Anyone know why the doubles never took place? Hope nothing bad.

May 13th, 2003, 04:53 PM
Her doubles is scheduled for late in the day. At least, I think it is. It's only 7:00 PM right now in Rome.

Congrats Monica! :bounce:

It appeared on the scoreboard for several minutes, and then disappeared. Maybe its just delayed. My fear is Monica withdrew because her foot is hurting.

May 13th, 2003, 05:06 PM
Their scoreboard isn't working for me. It's still stuck at the precise moment she defeated Casanova. It doesn't even say "Williams" anywhere, no matter how much I re-open or refresh it.

Maybe a rain delay?

May 13th, 2003, 05:09 PM
No another doubles match went on in the court they were supposed to be on. Well, we'll find out eventually, I suppose. No use worrying about it.

May 13th, 2003, 05:11 PM
they got Dechy and Coetzer up and Bartoli in dubs. what's going on?

May 13th, 2003, 05:37 PM
Jennifer Hopkins / Sonya Jeyaseelan (USA/CAN) d. (WC) Rita Grande / Monica Seles (ITA/USA) w/o

they didn't say whether Grande or Seles were injured!

May 13th, 2003, 05:40 PM

May 13th, 2003, 06:41 PM
Anyone know who/why pulled out of doubles?

May 13th, 2003, 06:43 PM
No news yet Seles, we'll have to keep our fingers crossed......

May 13th, 2003, 06:50 PM
Great pic!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just saw the match in Eurosport. I think that she was pretty solid today, it wasn't easy at all to play Miriam, who was hitting much harder than Monica. She served some good serves, aces. Solid match, but she still can improve her game. Sometimes, she seemed to be very careful with her foot, but i think it was more prevention than a pain. But it's obvious she'll be limited by this foot until the end of her career (it surely will be the main reason i believe)

May 13th, 2003, 11:25 PM
I'm afraid you're right Kuti Kis&Monica. She's been being careful with her foot for the past year or so...I just hope she keeps her stamina up and perhaps she'll lose some weight, so that she keeps it off that fragile foot...

May 13th, 2003, 11:26 PM
Oh, and I believe Grande withdrew, not Monica...YEAH!

May 14th, 2003, 12:05 AM
hopefully monica can get better and better with every match. she looks so happy in that picture... can u imagine how ecstatic she would be if she won this thing again? hopefully she gets a lot of people to come and see her play so she will have these kinds of fans at all her matches (seems like they will be lol). GO MONICA!

May 14th, 2003, 02:26 AM
Great win today for sure! Monica needed this match to get back in the groove of things. Casanova was definately making us Seles fans sweat! But Monica turned it up for a 3 set win!

I have some pics on my site for anyone interested! We also had live scoring today on our forum during the match. Come join us when Monica plays Nadia Petrova(RUS) in the 2nd rd.
