this player has to play doubles consistantly. I'm sorry although i know Serena and Venus is the best team in the world, but they rarely play doubles. So who is that WonderWoman????

Serena wins most of the time when she plays with Venus. That doesn't necessarily make her a great doubles player. Looking beyond Venus, she only has played 2 tournaments - she won one and lost in the QF of another.

didn't she win a doubles title with stevenson? if she did then she must be a good doubles player.

that's certainly true, she is partnered with another great player. But I wasn't saying she's a great doubles player. The question is who is the best at both. Given that Serena is far and away the best player in the world right now and one half the best doubles team in the world, I think that means she gets the prize, don't you think?

The question is who is best at both. I look at it like this; if I am a team captain and can choose from the top 20 singles players, which player do I want as a singles player? Serena, of course. Who do I want as a doubles player? Kim or Lindsay. So, the question then becomes, who would I want as a singles player and then as someone to play doubles with "fill in name." That's tougher, and I don't really have an answer. It would depend on the competition.

Why on Earth would you want Kim or Lindsay instead of Serena as your doubles player? I don't think there's any reason.

Although I may appear somewhat biased, I think the answer's clear cut: the Williams Sisters. They're #1 and 2 in the world, and they win virtually every doubles tourney they enter.

May 12th, 2003, 05:24 AM
Yes, but you can't say the Williams sisters since they are two people. I think that for the sake of interesting discussion we should omit them since we know they are currently the best.

Anyway, I would definitely say the answer is Lindsay. She's currently a more accomplished player than Kim in either department, who is likely 2nd.

IF we are going by a player who plays doubles consistently then you have to go with Kim....#2 in singles ...not sure of rank in doubles but she has had good results. I wouldn't pick Lindsay b/c she hasn't been getting the results in singles that she should be esp when compared to Kim.

As i have said before put Kim a (1) or (2) before her name, any category, singles-doubles whatever, but "IF" she does not win a slam, that number is just only a fake, simply because that´s only a number before her name aka Martina Hingis after 1999 season., the best players wins the best events (4 grand slams) not all, i mean at least should win one or two in the same year to be called the best.

Venus and Serena are not worried and won´t be ever worried about the ranking, unless it makes them to play against eachother before the final of the event they play.
What can i tell you from them in doubles? Even more of a joke, players keep playing the DOUBLES tour the whole season and when they come up against the Williamses they lose. Venus and Serena can come in to the event as WC, Qualifiers or whatever and still grab the title, no matter what.

Its unfair to look at the rankings right now for Lindsay just play doubles this year and only 1/3 season last year in singles.

Lindsay has GS and itles on singles and doubles to her name. AND MIND YOU!!!! HER DOUBLES TITLES WERE OF DIFFERENT PARTNERS!!!!!!!

Serena is great doubles player, but she needs to prove it partnering to a mediocre singles player like Lindsay does.

Look who is in denial here! As far as i know Lindsay has only won 2 slams in DOUBLES Wimbledon 99 and Usopen 97. I don´t remember Australian, but i´m sure she has never won Roland Garros doubles.

Serena has won all four slams in doubles same as singles.

No one playing actively on both tours has acomplished these in both categories.

Tell me what Lindsay´s acomplishments are to be ahead of Serena singles or doubles???
Tell me any player and why should be ahead of Serena..... tell me numbers, titles... and we can talk

Serena combine with Venus, as the two best best players in thw world of 2002, no wonder they could accomplished such thing, plus the absence of Lindsay and Martina.

Williams team is undoubtedly the best as of now but we are talking about doubles player not team. Lindsay partnered with Novotna, Mary Joe and Corina when she won her doubles GS ( YES 3 GS not 2). Also with different partners winning 32+ doubles titles.

Lindsay is an accomplished doubles player whoever is with her on the court. Serena is only accomplished doubles player only with Venus. She tried with the greatest doubles player of all time Navratilova and they end up losing. Serena is a great singles player but not as great as doubles. She can only adjust her game with Venus whom she played all her life almost everyday. A DOUBLES PLAYER SHOULD BE ALWAYS AT HER BEST NO MATTER WHO YOUR PARTNER IS and that is LINDSAY!!!!
If Martina Hingis is still here, then Lindsay maybe a close second.

You all keep mentioning the Williams sisters as a team. If I have a random doubles player and need to choose a partner for that person, I am not going to choose Serena. She isn't a great doubles player - per se - she's just great when with Venus. Big difference.

As for Lindsay in singles - who cares that she won 3 majors over 3 years ago?? In terms of singles players right now, Kim, Serena, Venus, and Justine are all ahead of Lindsay; all beat her the last time they played her (and all, except maybe Venus, have done so this year).

If you base it on tournies, played, clearly kim would get the go as the top spot.

since you want to continully count out the sisters either b/c they clearly "are the best" or b/c they don't "play enough" then I think you should base it on head to head when you have narrowed it down to the top players, serena vs kim in doubles (serena wins) serena vs kim singels (serena wins) venus vs. kim doubles (venus wins) venus vs kim singles (venus wins) serena vs lindsay doubles (serena wins) serena vs lindsay singles (serena wins) venus vs. lindsay doubles (venus wins) venus vs. lindsay singles (venus wins) etc..... i think you get it. The question should not at all be based on the factor of tournies played and what not. if anything the low amount of tournies played should let you know that they are that good. Seeing they don't hardly even pratice doubles, they just go out in play, you think they would be off some, or just not dominate as much as they do. Venus and Serena only play in the slams. With Singles players (take kim for example) when they take a month off from the tour and come back, they are a lil rusty and easy matches that should be routine, get just a little complicated. now had kim not tooken the break, she would've cruzed even more in her "opening round matches in berlin" Take Venus and Serena in doubles, they are off like 2-3 months at a time, and come in the slams, and loose like 1 set the entire tournie. That says more to me, than it would saying someone playing more and more doubles tournies.

So I would defintely say Serena or Venus for that pick. Now about that factor of would they win if they played more and more. Hell they play so little, why wouldn't they win? Please someone explain, w/out the "the other player's aren't used to their style of doubles play theory"

BEST DOUBLES PLAYER not DOUBLES TEAM!!!!!!!
to corret you, how can you be a doubles player w/out a partner there fore a team? Please explain? For w/out Pam Shriver, and the others, Martina Navartilova was not winning all those grand slam titles as a "DOUBLES PLAYER" she was a doubles "TEAM" player.

1 Player can't go out there to win a doubles title. That is exaclty why I have never understood how you can rank 1 person with a doubles ranking, when they are not the only ones out there on the court. They should rank by teams and not by players. I also know they rank like this so anyone can team up with anyone and still get a rank if you are ranked around 5-6, but you got to 5 or 6 playing mainly with the same partner not multiples.

jenglisbe
May 12th, 2003, 06:16 PM
SerenaSlam - that's a fair point, and the Race standings are by team. There is an individual ranking to determine best player because many players play with various partners. To me, that is a true measure of the best doubles player. If a player can win numerous doubles matches/titles with multiple partners, it shows that person is a great doubles player.

If a player wins many titles with the same player, it shows they are a great doubles team, but it doesn't necessarily mean each is a great doubles player.

What a stupid remark, so the Woodies were NOT GREAT DOUBLES PLAYERS, because they won only as a team???? GIGI and Natasha also are not good doubles players?

So Corina Morariu, Mary Joe Fernandez and Jana Novotna should give Davenport all the money because their slams Doubles won with Lindsay were all because of Lindsay??? LOL does not even have sense. Doubles is a TEAM competition. Davenport alone did not won those events.

As a matter of fact Venus and Serena WERE NOT the two best players in the world when they won 1999 Roland Garros, 1999 Usopen, neither when they won 2000 Wimbledon or 2001 Australian Open.

I just don´t undertand what´s the point? What if they would have been 1 and 2 back then?
So they can not team up because they are 1 and 2 respectively? Or just their wins count less because they are the two best single players?

PS. Sorry i forgot that Lindsay Roland GArros win in doubles with Mary Joe :o wow :) i really forgot about it.

Hello, Serena won with Alex Stevenson(I think), which MUST mean she's a great doubles player. Serena as of now is the best at singles and doubles. I would pick her to win a doubles Grand Slam partnered with someone like Mary Pierce.:) Kim, and Lindsay are 2nd and 3rd right now IMO, Venus 4th only because she doesnt play doubles with anyone besides Serena so it's hard to judge.

I wouldn't put venus forth, take note serena has only played with 2 other people, that 1 time, and frankly to me it seemed more a "fun" thing to do, then actually them going out there serisouly. I would put Venus right behind Serena, even though she hasn't played with anyone else. Had Serena not played with Alex or Martina, I think we all would still say she is the best in singles and doubles, therefore Venus would follow right behind her seeing Venus only has played with Serena. I think if Venus were to play with someone else, they would win as well.
