Kim Clijsters smacked the side of her sneaker with the rim of her racquet to clear away the red clay caked in the sole of her sneaker. Then the top seed put her foot down in swiping away three set points roaring back from a 2-5 deficit to win five consecutive games en route to a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Fabiola Zuluaga in a near 90-minute match at the German Open today.

The 2001 French Open finalist's fighting spirit carried her to the comeback victory over the 52nd-ranked Colombian.

"I made some silly mistakes and I had to fight to turn it around," Clijsters said. "She's one of many girls out there playing really well and you have to be very fit to beat her."

In the quarterfinals, Clijsters will play either Daniela Hantuchova or Swiss Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian for a spot in the semifinals.

Former French Open champion Jennifer Capriati also advanced to the quarters with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nathalie Dechy.
