View Full Version : This year's RED CLAY COVERAGE almost nonexistent on ESPN/2

It's truly pathetic to note that in the past we would have had at least

4 days from all three of the Tennis Masters Series in Monte Carlo, Rome and Hamburg on the men's side. This year we get a measly 1 hour wrapup at the end of the week which means about 20-25 hrs of tennis reduced to a paltry 3 hours. :fiery:

On the women's side the picture is even bleaker. No coverage of the new event in Warsaw whereas Hamburg was televised on Oxygen and NOW NO COVERAGE OF BERLIN or ROME which are both very prestigious tier 1 tournaments. Last year's coverage was about 4 days of Berlin and 3 days of Rome for a total of 13-15 hrs reduced to ZERO, nada, zilch this years.

So to sum things up 33-40 hrs of red clay court tennis is GONE and replaced by a pathetic 3 hrs. And yet they want good ratings for their coverage of Roland Garros without showing any of the warm-up tourneys?

THIS IS A TRAVESTY AND OUTRAGE PEOPLE!!!!!!!

it is a travesty, but not unexpected.

hopefully the tennis channel will grow in strength and get the rights to televise a lot of these events. until such time, non-french open european clay events will continue to get little coverage...

Pathetic. I can't believe some of the SHIT they show on ESPN over Tennis...
Billiards
Bowling
World Strongest man from 1983

Fucking boring shit. God, I hope the Tennis Channel becomes huge and covers this stuff, and soon.

We're getting some coverage on TSN, but less than we were when we were getting ESPN coverage.

The Tennis Channel needs to go back to the pits of hell from whence it came.

I'm already used to it....   I used to have ALL those WTA tournaments in 2000 and 2001. But then PSN went bankrupt here in Argentina   :( :( and we got stuck with ESPN who ONLY shows men.
This is trully sad and pathetic, I mean, I get to see Roland Garros, shared with the men, (and mostly Argentinian players because they will all do well in clay and practiacally no women tennis until QF) and NO warm up tournament.
I've sent already zillions of mails to ESPN, so as foxsports requesting to show SOME WTA, I don't mean much tournaments, at least 1!! I don't care if it's a Tier VI or whatever, I just want to see WTA; but they don't even care to send me an answer saying, "sorry dude, can't do that". For the past two years the only matches I saw Lindsay playing were in the US OPEN, 2, and the Australian Open 4th r. which she lost 9-7  :(

The only thing I got left is two but videos from the other side of the world and spend fortunes in it. I'm planning to buy one now since I'm travelling to Italy......
And for the ones who DO get TV. coverage of Women and complain about it, plase don't. I wish I'd be in your position.

Then wouldn't you be cramped for space rebecca?

Serioulsy though people don't blame espn but the blame where it belongs: the sorely mismanaged tennis channel.

the should have only gone on when they had complete deals worked out with the various cable companies not this end of the year crap that screws everyone.

I can sympathise cos here in SA if you don't have sattelite (which only shows mens tournaments if you're lucky) you have the great honour of watching ten-pin bowling, darts and other such shit. Who watches "sports" such as this anyway and how the hell can it possibly come into the minds of the schedulers that more people would wanna watch this shit more than tennis. AAAHHHHH.

This is really sad. Neither the ATP or the WTA could get it together to get a decent tv contract in the USA? And they wonder why the sport is losing popularity? :o

Why would the US, the most self-rightous country on the planet, care about anything that's not American? (specially since 9/11 and Iraq). It seems as if any indifference we had before towards events going on in other countries has only increased in the last few years.
I can't recall exactly the unfortunate statistic, but there's a huge number of Americans that can't even point to the US on a globe.....clearly the general breadth of knowledge of world events outside our boundaries is even less....

So unfortunately, I can't say I'm surprised on the coverage recently. It's a damn shame, no doubt about that. Let's hope the Tennis Channel gets its act together - FAST.

If the sudden lack of european clay court coverage (non FO) is the result of American resentment towards the French...then good lord have reached another all time low.

I think since now ESPN has Wimbledon that it has dropped the German and Italian Opens. The German Open may be extinct next year, and there were no WS at Berlin and only 1 WS in Rome. It is bad though as I would like to see the Rome tournament.
