Capriati Scores Straight Sets Win, Eyes Another Comeback

Jennifer Capriati By Richard Pagliaro

Jennifer Capriati competes best when she's inspired by a cause. Currently mired in a title drought that has seen her go 15 months since capturing her last championship, Capriati's ranking had dropped to No. 7. Rather than create cause for concern, Capriati is confident she can create another comeback.

"I'm a fighter," said Capriati, who won her last tournament title at the 2002 Australian Open. "Others give up but I don't. I just dig deeper."

Today, the fourth-seeded Florida resident dug balls out of the dirt and pounded strong shots all over the court to down Italy's Francesca Schiavone, 6-4, 6-4, in an 89-minute second-round match at the German Open.

The 2001 Roland Garros champion was pleased with her season debut on the red clay.

"It was a good start," Capriati said. "I rallied well, I was patient on the long points and aggressive at the right moments."

In the third round of the $1.2 million Berlin event, Capriati will take on French woman Nathalie Dechy, who was a 6-4, 6-2 victor over Maja Matevzic.

)Jenny could win a tournament if she wanted, but her competing in tier 3 events would be ridicuolous (unless of course it was Birmingham Jen ;)
