Here's a pic of Lauren I've managed to find from back in her high school days at Loreto Normanhurst College. :)

ooh a Lauren thread :)

I like Lauren a lot, she's fiesty and a real cutie :)

I've got to say I don't think her European clay sojourn will be all that successful (IMO), but I certainly hope I'm proven wrong. I just think they are the wrong tournaments for her to play, especially being $25K level. No doubt she will run into lots of Italians and Spaniards that were born on the stuff :(
I don't think her game will suit well on clay...Lauren tends to rush the ball and doesn't have a lot of patience...but anyway you have to give her credit for giving it a go. One must learn to play on all surfaces right?

TS

Oh...and I didn't realise her b'day was just a few weeks ago! Happy B'day!!! :D

At this point in her career, I think it's better for her to try and get her ranking up to a comfortable position, more than trying to play on all surfaces. She made a bad decision by withdrawing from $25K Hochiminh City due to SARS probably. She could have done really well there due to the weak field. :(

She played a smarter schedule last year when she headed up to North America and did quite well reaching 2 $10K SFs. :)

Currently, she's 17th on the Alternate list for $25K Stockholm next week. I'm scared she won't make it.

She's quite lucky because all the other $25K events she entered have a 64 player qualifying draw, so she should make it. :)

Anyway, all the best to Lauren on her European tour. :D

BTW, I'm wondering how her financial situation is at the moment...

I don't think she has a sponsor, so all her financing must come from her parents' pockets. :o

Terry, I know this may seem like a silly question, but did her family look well-off financially when you saw them at the Aus Open? :o

Some good news, Lauren made the maindraw cutoffs for $10K Almeria, Spain (Week of 19 May). This will save her from playing unnecessary qualy matches, although it could help her to get some groove. :)

TS

lol I can't really remember :o I remember her parents sitting an watching, and saw her brother walking around quite a bit (seemed maybe 15/16 or so?)...they seemed regular middle class people from memory!

She is currently ranked around 530 I think she should play some 10Ks rather than all the scheduled 25Ks, she needs to win some matches and will run into a lot of tough players in the 25Ks, 10Ks would be a better experience for her

Rising Sun

I've updated Lauren's schedule.

She's replaced $25K Galatina with $10K Stare Splavy. Good decision. :)

She's also now 12th in the Alternate list for $25K Stockholm next week. I do hope she gets in...

Molnar is the seeded opponent...don't know anything about her, but she is European so therefore will be tough on clay ;)

Lauren lost 1-6 2-6...

I'll bet she totally felt out of place on the clay courts, after playing on grass the previous two weeks.

Thank goodness, next week will be a hardcourt tourney. :)

I wish her all the best next week :)

I'm sure if she drew Adriana she could've gotten a win  :o Which is why I hate 16 seeds in these $25K qualy fields

Rising Sun
May 11th, 2003, 03:57 PM
Exactly. In $25K qualifying draws, you're guaranteed to get a seed in the 1st rd if you're unseeded.

It looks like she didn't make the cutoffs for Doubles qualies.

Lauren is seeded 7 at $10K Almeria, ESP. She has a good draw plus it's a hardcourt tourney, so hopefully she can get a couple of wins at least. :)

She's also playing doubles with Szili...

Hopefully she does better in doubles. :)

Lauren's not playing this week. Hopefully she's practising hard on clay. :) Either that or she might be in RG catching some action....

In other news, she's made the maindraw of $10K Stare Splavy, CZE next week. :D

Rising Sun
Jun 12th, 2003, 04:12 PM
Lauren won a match on clay!!!! :D

She would be doing much better had she decided to play in North America instead. :(

TS
Jun 13th, 2003, 05:51 AM
I know...

But she took 7 games off Volekova who is a decent player, and that is around 5 more games than I was expecting (on this surface) ;)

Geez, she should have gone to $25K Hamilton! If Cassandra Barr can almost get a win there in the main draw, Im sure Lauren could at least reach the QF or better! Who gives these young kids scheduling advice?

Rising Sun

Lauren lost in the last rd of qualies at $25K Lenzerheide, SUI. Good to see her winning 2 matches in a row on clay. :)

She'll be playing in the maindraw of $10K Alkmaar, NED this coming week, clay again. ;)

I've updated her schedule. :)

Thanks anyway, Yoshie. :)

Lauren lost 1st rd at $10K Alkmaar, NED last week against the 2nd seed.

She's not playing this week, I presume she's gone to watch Wimby. :)

She's playing $10K Felixstowe, GBR next week which is her last tourney on the European circuit. :)

Rising Sun
Jul 3rd, 2003, 06:26 PM
Lauren's entered both $50K Oyster Bay & $50K Lexington, but she's in the Alternates for both.

I'd prefer if she took a month's rest after Felixstowe, then return to play the $10Ks in Thailand.

Rising Sun

Lauren lost in the 2nd rd of Felixstowe & the 1st rd of qualies at Oyster Bay & Lexington. At least she gets 1 point at least for each tourney...

I've updated her schedule. Looks like next week's $50K Louisville will be her last tourney for the time being, as she's not committed to anywhere else at this point...

I agree danker...some weaker $10K's are what she needs right now to build some confidence.

I'm so disappointed with her recent efforts, especially a couple of those losses where she barely won games :( She's a better player than that.

I wonder if she will travel to Japan in September for the 10K's there...Aussies traditionally do well there ;)

Terry, I was thinking the same thing. I would really like her to go to Japan and play the 4 week circuit. Either that, or go to India in September...

I wouldn't be surprised the main objective of the European and American tours were to see how she would 'fare' against tougher opponents...

Lauren lost in straight sets to Su-Wei Hsieh at $10K Ibaraki (Week 1).

Su-Wei had a 14 match winning streak coming to the match, so it was somewhat a tough ask for Lauren to win... :(

I know this sounds cheesy, but I had an awful gut feeling that Lauren would draw Su-Wei when I saw Su-Wei's qualifying 1st rd win...

Anyway, good luck next week Lauren. Hopefully a kinder draw this time. :)

Week of 20 Oct: $25K Rockhampton, AUS

I've updated Lauren's schedule & results in the 1st page.

In 4 tourneys this year, she's lost all 4 so far. Although it's disappointing, it's partly because her draws have all been pretty tough.

What she needs now is a single win, to boost her confidence.

She plays D'Amelio again for the second time this year at Yarrawonga this week. I hope she can get revenge this time.

I really believe she's capable of a lot more. 2002 was a great year for her, reaching a few $10K semifinals and so on. With good scheduling this year, I hope she can get back her 2002 form. :)

Dubravka Cupac mentioned in her thread that Lauren works extremely hard and deserves all the good results she gets. This makes me want to cheer for her even more. A hardworker deserves all the support.

I remember reading somewhere a couple of years ago that Lauren hopes to pursue a career in physiotherapy if her tennis career doesn't go to plan. I hope she won't quit tennis yet, because I'm hoping she'll be a late bloomer like most Aussie players (also Asian players as a matter of fact). I just hope her parents will continue supporting her dream. :)

Don't give up Lauren. Keep working hard and I'm sure you'll get there. :D

Poor Lauren. She lost to D'Amelio again, but this time in a 3rd set tiebreak. :fiery:

I'm glad it was a closer match this time, but these kind of close losses can only worsen one's confidence, IMHO.

I'm glad she got "revenge" in doubles with Hori though. Hope she can gain singles confidence through doubles wins. :)

Last year, Lauren headed to Japan for 2 weeks, then went to Europe for a number of red clay tourneys.

What I hope she does this year is either stay in Asia for a number of weeks, or go to Asia for a few weeks before going to the hardcourt events in the US. I definitely hope she won't go to Europe this year.

Good luck Lauren! ;)

Here is a good article featuring Lauren from during the Warrnambool tourney.

Cheung back in the winning way
March 3, 2005

AFTER three years of battling to overcome an elbow injury, Sydney's Lauren Cheung is making every post a winner as she aims to get back on top of her game.

The 20-year-old yesterday powered through her first-round clash at the $10,000 Warrnambool International at the lawn tennis centre, defeating fellow Sydneysider Nicole Kriz 6-2 6-1.

Cheung, who made the second round of qualifying at the $50,000 Bendigo event last week said she was rapt to be back playing tennis after some tough times.

"I was pretty happy with that," she said.

"I've actually had some good results on grass but anything can happen.

"You can get bad bounces and everything like that.

"You just can't afford to lose your temper.

"I'm just trying to get some matches under my belt and get some confidence so I can try and get back to where I was before my injury.

"I came back playing at the start of February, just training and trying to get ready for these tournaments, so to get a win like that, I'm pretty happy with."

It was Cheung's third win for the week after winning through two rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw.

In the second round she will face the in-form Russian Julia Vorobieva who won her opening match comfortably on Tuesday.

Cheung admitted that life on the secondary tour could be both emotionally and financially draining.

"It's tough, especially when you're travelling by yourself," she said.

"I have a racquet sponsor but you really do have to finance yourself because you're not making the big dollars." Cheung said the sheer weight of numbers on the satellite circuit made constant ranking improvement tough.

"You've just got to keep winning at this level to get a chance at the next step," she said.

"It's tough mentally especially.

"It's a hard sport to succeed in because there are so many that are wanting to do it."

I guess it explains why Lauren had not played well for awhile. According to her Tennis Australia profile, she got injured after the 2003 Aus Open, which is where her disappointing results started.

Have to admit, I nearly gave up on her prior to her encouraging results so far this year. :o

I'm so happy she entered Ho Chi Minh. I'd been wondering what she was up to. She did so well on the AUS circuit. Just included her results so far for the year. The win against Chakravarthi (# 371) was the 3rd best win of her career & her best ever win over a non-Australian player. Her wins against Kriz (# 545 & 585) were her tied 6th & her 8th best career wins ever out of 32 wins. She also had the 3rd best doubles victory of her career with Lisa D'Amelio at Benalla over:
(4) Lara Picone & Aleksandra Srndovic (825) 6-7(3) 7-6(3) 6-2!
Let's hope this fantastic run continues for Lauren!!

Q2: d. Danielle Kypreos (AUS) 6-1 6-3

Really encouraging scores. :)
She'll play Jessica Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American junior, who'll start playing for Stanford later this year. She's plays very little despite being a talented player, and reached 2 $25K SF in Mexico last year. Tough match for Lauren, but not impossible.

Yeah, I'd like to know too. From photos I've seen of her, she looks like a regular 2 handed backhand baseliner. I'll be going to watch the $25k in Rockhampton (if not then Mackay, 1 or the other) at the end of Sep. So I'll have heaps of match reports for everyone. I'll be able to give a run down on all the Aussie players styles of play then :bounce:

I've seen Lauren play once and that was at AO qualifying in 2003. She only won a game against someone who I recall as being Teryn Ashley?

Obviously she got smoked so it was hard to figure out her game. She is a run of the mill back court player, solid groundies, double handed on the backhand, rather quick on her feet too. From what I could gather she didn't really know how to figure her way into the match, and just let herself get mowed down. I still saw some potential in her as she hits with a fair bit of power, and was impressed with her composure but she didn't realy know how to construct her points.

She kind of reminds me of Tiffany Welford, except she hits harder than TJ, but with much less consistency.

$10k St Joseph:
Singles 1r:
(819)Lauren vs (804)Nina Munch-Soegaard (NOR).
Nina's improved her ranking this year from 1115 to 804 & is only 17 years old.
Doubles 1r:
(3/1270)Lauren/Naoko Horikawa(JPN) vs (1579)Gates/Joshi (USA).
This was the only 1r match up featuring 2 ranked teams. So not much luck here for Lauren. Hope she puts in a good still :D

(804)Nina Munch-Soegaard (NOR) d. (819)Lauren - 6-2,6-1 :o
Her dub's partner Horikawa retired from the singles, so they'd have to lose the dub's on a w/o
I don't reckon we'll see too many promising results from Lauren before the AUS circuit.

Surely a win can't be too far away. Even Bianca Acquistapace managaed one this week, after 10 straight losses.

(1579)Gates/Joshi (USA) d. (3/1270)Lauren/Naoko Horikawa(JPN) - 4-1 ret.
I though if a player retired from a singles match, they automatically forfeited the dub's   I suppose at least Lauren gets an extra $25 for the 5 games she played!!!
By the way, Bianca's now won 2 in a row!!!

wow thats $5 per game!!!

No depends on circumstances whether or not they have to forfeit their dubls match and what the tournament referee and doctor put on the medical certificate!

Yeah don't spend it all at once
I just remember 10 years or so ago, a match between Yayuk Basuki & I think Sabatini or Sanchez-V or someone like that at the AUS Open. Yayuk had a leg injury & didn't want to play the singles but limped through it so she could play in the dub's. I can't remember if she finished the match. I remember the commentators bitching that they'd put a match like that on centre court when the organisers knew yayuk had an injury & it would be a crap match. Good at least Lauren got the chance to earn $5 per game, when it could've been like 60c per game!

oh well i dont know the exact rule but just know that at perth junior itf some players were automatically withdrawn from singles (i think if they forfeit and gave a walkover) where as players who for example retired during their match were allowed to play dubls after getting treatment and ok from referee after match!

I was hoping Lauren would enter the $10Ks in Japan, but I didn't see her name. :(

I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't play any more tourneys until the $25Ks in Queensland.

I was right. :o

Lauren's so far entered:

- $25K Mackay, AUS (Week of 19 Sep)
- $25K Rockhampton, AUS (Week of 26 Sep)

She'll have to play qualies, which is a good thing as she needs wins badly at the moment. I just hope she won't be too rusty. Good luck to her. :D

Lauren withdrew from Mackay, but is still in the list for Rockhampton.

I wonder what's wrong. I hope she's not injured...

Hmmm, Lauren just had one of the bigger wins of her career, beating Monique Adamczak 7-5 6-3 in the first round of Rockhampton.

Wonderful result for her, and I'm thrilled for her!!! This should give her a welcome boost, and it's even better as she was a LL for this event. Just annoyed it came at the expense of my favourite Aussie player...lol

Lauren lose handily in the 2R, but it was encouraging to see her get a couple of wins this week. :)

Hopefully she does even better in Canberra (even tho it's on clay).

Lauren's #5 on alternate list for Pt Pirie. Will definitely get into qualifying after all the withdrawls happen.

Pt Pirie:
Q1:
So after beating Danielle Kypreos 6-1,6-3 in Vietnam 6 months ago. The tables turn Danielle beats Lauren 6-1,6-3.
Danielle has been in-form of late though. Will be sure to give match reports on Lauren from Nuriootpa this weekend.

Lauren's not entered the NZ $10k's or the Sydney $25k.
Does anyone know if she's retired??

I'd assume she has.

It's too bad she was plagued by injury and that appendicitis last year came when she was playing well. :(

Did Lauren play in college?
