Schett hadn't won a match since the second week of January in Hobart, Australia. Granville, an American, had sent the Austrian to her fourth consecutive loss in February at Scottsdale, Ariz.

Schett, ranked No. 55 after peaking at No. 7 in 1999, plays sixth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova in the second round.

Nathalie Dechy, who gained a No. 17 seeding when an injured Venus Williams (news - web sites) withdrew Sunday, defeated Clarisa Fernandez 6-0, 6-4.

Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian downed 13th-seeded Ai Sugiyama 6-1, 7-5. It was the Swiss player's third win since March, when she returned from an eight-week layoff because of a rib injury.

In other matches, Elena Likhovtseva beat qualifier Henrieta Nagyova 6-1, 6-1; Anca Barna topped Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-2; and Daja Bedanova stopped qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2, 6-3.
