Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian downed 13th-seeded Ai Sugiyama 6-1, 7-5. It was the Swiss player's third win since March, when she returned from an eight-week layoff because of a rib injury.

In other matches, Elena Likhovtseva beat qualifier Henrieta Nagyova 6-1, 6-1; Anca Barna topped Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-4, 6-2; and Daja Bedanova stopped qualifier Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2, 6-3.
