I thought it was my turn to start a thread! :wavey:

Daniela has bye in first round and she is seeded 3rd, after Venus and Mauresmo.

Good luck Daniela!!

Too bad she is once again in Venus's part of the draw!!! First match agsint Zuluaga could be very very tricky! Especailly on clay!!! Remember in AO where she almost made me pass out lol...

Well good luck Dani!!! :bounce:

After a good (yet still shaky) Fed Cup run lets hope the engine is still running hot.

Go get 'em Dani.

Let's hope those FED CUP wins give her mental boost! :bounce: The Bye oughta give her ample time to recharge the batteries.

Can we hope for a Daniela/Jelena final? ;)

Best of Luck Daniela! You Can DO it!

Protesting and stuff, yeah, true. Berlin is total mayhem every year on the 1st of May, some kiddies consider rampaging as a sport...

I'm sitting here at work and I'm finding it very difficult to get worked up about this tin pot tournament. In a way, I hope Dani loses so that it gives her a bit more of a rest. This would have been an ideal tourney to miss as hardly anyone of any note has entered it and winning it would not prove anything. We all agree that she needs a break so why is she bothering with meaningless pots like this?

Don't get me wrong, of course I'm sad  that Dani lost but at the same time I'm pleased that she has more time to prepare for Berlin next week. She should never have entered this meaningless Warsaw tournament. This is the least 'upset' I have been after a defeat, maybe it's more of a sense of relief, and anyway, there was no incentive as she would have to have played V.Williams in the semi again. :( Maybe that is the key issue here, incentive. Last weekend there was clearly a huge incentive as defending champs and the way she fought back in both of her matches showed her determination. This loss to another lowly ranked player maybe suggests that there was no fight there. I'm sure she tried her best, but maybe her heart wasn't in it.

dhnet2
May 1st, 2003, 02:41 PM
Well said Graham, Daniela's a big tournament play isn't she, maybe motivation is a problem like you say for 'lesser' tournaments. Bound to be a come down after the weekend.

But did you see the stats?

http://www.jandscup.pl/eng/meczstat.php?id=62

From those, looks like Daniela's serve has gone to pieces, particularly the second, where she used to have such a big advantage :( Any good returner of serve will love those stats. Dementieva is one of the best is she not, explains Amelia Island a bit more perhaps?

I'm still thinking Daniela needs to skip some tournaments, if I was Nigel I'd advise skipping the whole clay court season, she never had chance to recuperate after playing too much tennis in 2002.

....and on top of that, Zuluaga is an expert on clay as well. As you say Craig, it makes you wonder why Dani bothers to enter the clay events which she so clearly struggles with.

6 DF's sucks.

I said in the AI thread that her service work has to get better. She was known as a big server, but her speed is down tremendously. When I coach and see that happening, it usually that the player is too tight, not playing loose enough for the body to work properly. One thing I can tell you it's not is fatique. When you're tired playing tennis, you automatically play a little looser. Whilst your serve speed might not be up, your DF's tend to drop because you're not hitting them as hard, and they tend to fall in. Same for return of serves. I always return better after I'm a little tired -again, because I'm looser - and Dani got aced 4 times today.

3 Net approaches? This is an area where I think Nigel is killing her. She was known as an all-courter from the get-go, and to see that few approaches makes me wonder if Nigel is trying to make her a "Big-Banger Baseliner." That's not her game, it's only a weapon that she has available to use when she needs it.

One good thig to see is the UEs are down.

If you take each player's points lost on UEs, Aces, and DFs, Dani comes out is ahead by 2 on points "given away." Therefore, I have to say that Dani just got outplayed here, and Zuluaga is a clay-court specialist, who was climbing the rankings before she hurt her shoulder.

Poor Dani!

Well Zuluaga is a clay expert, so I wasn't expecting much! Well good luck next time :bounce:

Oh dear!
I agree with Graham, im not as 'upset' as i have been at all dani's other defeats, i suppose i was expecting this considering her hectic week last week!! and as Graham said, more chance for her to prepare for Berlin!

from bbc news website:
....third-seeded Daniela Hantuchova suffered a shock 6-2 6-4 defeat at the hands of Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga.

"I don't usually find excuses when I lose, but I really couldn't have done much today," said Hantuchova.

"The wind was so strong. I was trying to be aggressive but it didn't pay off. Basically she was putting the ball back in the court and I was making too many mistakes."
..........

Sooner or later, she'll get her break where everything goes right. I just hope its at a major.

Errrmm, yes sweetheart, that's what she's supposed to do. I do hope that didn't come as a nasty shock

I don't agree with that
She has the potential and the ambition of being a great player, so she can't skip clay events, and
therefore skip one of the four Slams.
When this black serie will end, it won't matter the
surface, she can do well on clay, I went especially
at the French last year to watch her, she was playing fabulous.
She must have pulled out of this damn Warsaw event
:fiery: it was too close to last weekend Fed Cup,
she would have rested and be full of confidence
after her 2 triumphs...

I don't know what's going on. I noticed that she had some marathon-like matches at autumn 2002 during the european indoor season, in which she
has several opportunities to end the matches quickly, but instead of that they all finish by
a 2 hours 1/2 marathons, with 50% victories.

After that : quarterfinal in Aussie Slam, and
the black serie began at Open Gaz de France in
Paris in february...(not on clay...).

I red a lot about eventual explanations in this
forum, but I don't know yet what to think : is it
mental or is it a physical thing, is it fatigue...?

Anyway, let's hope she'll recover for Berlin, she
has a QF place to defend from 2002.
Damn this J&S :fiery:

Hi all,

This from Yahoo! Sports, u know that headline puts a really unsettling visual in one's mind...

Winds of Warsaw blow away Hantuchova

Daniela Hantuchova's frustrating season continued when a combination of Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga and a vicious swirling wind conspired to knock her out of the 700,000-euro WTA event here.

The leggy Slovakian third-seed lost 6-2, 6-4 to her Colombian opponent and then blamed the windy conditions for her unexpected defeat. Chairs were blown over on the red clay court, and the roofs of tents surrounding the playing area were in danger of blowing away.

"I don't usually find excuses when I lose, but I really couldn't have done much today," said Hantuchova.

"The wind was so strong. I was trying to be aggressive but it didn't pay off. Basically she was putting the ball back in the court and I was making too many mistakes. Because of the wind I was afraid to miss, and I wasn't going for it. It was not really my game."

Agree completely :wavey:

I also would like to see her more often at the net to kill points there. Because of being so tall she has a good reach and it would be more easy and secure to make the point at the net instead of risky shots from the baseline. It's good to see that she reduced the number of UE's drastically but at the same time the number of winners went down as well. Kinda logical, but I think more net approaches could solve that problem. It's pretty clear that her net play has deteriorated, that could also explain the bad performances in doubles I think.

Looking forward to Berlin, Germany seems to be a good pavement for her :)

Daniela Hantuchova's frustrating season
To me, the only frustrating thing is the attitude of Eurosport since this year's IW.

Chairs were blown over on the red clay court, and the roofs of tents surrounding the playing area were in danger of blowing away
Now!!! Play tennis in such conditions!!!!

I was in Warsaw and i saw Daniela's match . She is totally out of form . She is very, very slow and her game was really boring . She didn't change thing in hole match . She played cross court balls almost all the time . In this syle she will out from top 20 very fast .
