from www.fedcup.com:

Yugoslavia’s eyes were firmly fixed on the Israel versus Bulgaria tie, the result of which would decide who of the three teams would finish on top of Group B. 15 year-old Tzvetana Pironkova pulled off a surprising win over Tzipora Obziler. The Israeli is 14 years older that the Bulgarian but experienced seemed to count for nothing today and Pironkova took her first Fed Cup victory 63 76(4). Magdalena Maleeva followed up with a closely fought 75 64 win over Anna Pistolesi. Singles victories however were not enough to ensure a play-off opportunity. Maleeva, partnered with Dessislava Topalova, looked sure from victory with a set and a break in hand but Israel battled back and ended Bulgaria’s hopes with a 67(3) 63 63 win. Yugoslavia ensured Georgia’s relegation with a 3-0 win and finish second behind Israel in Group B.

Topalova was a complete failure... She ruined the effort of the whole team. :fiery:

I'm very proud with 15 year old Tzvetana Pironkova who proved my statement that she might have very bright future :D :hearts:

:D And for Maggie - 3 out of 3 beating Pistolesi in straight sets and two very good young players - Jankovic and Chakhnashvili ...
Hope she has a good clay court season !!! ;)

Ireland

If Liggan had played you guys would ahev won for sure :)

Jakub don't be excited about Netherlands winning, if they do it's a 3-way tie, and teh team with teh most matches won goes through. I think Poland and Netherlands are equal (britain would be relegated), and it would go to games won. And i have a funny feeling that Netherlands would triumph.

Here are the rules:
5. METHOD OF DETERMINING PLACES IN THE ROUND ROBIN
i) Each Tie will consist of three matches, two singles and one doubles.
ii) The Nation that wins the majority of matches in the Tie shall be declared the winner and shall be awarded one point.
iii) If two Nations score an equal number of points, the head-to-head result between these Nations shall decide the winner.
iv) If three or more Nations score an equal number of points, the number of matches won shall decide the winner.
v) If matches won are equal, the number of sets won shall decide the winner.
vi) If sets won are equal, the number of sets lost shall decide the winner.
vii) If sets lost are equal, the number of games won shall decide the winner.
viii) If games won are equal, the number of games lost shall decide the winner.
ix) If any match is stopped and not completed for reasons of injury, etc., the full score shall be recorded. Example: Player A leads over Play B by 6-1, 2-0 when Player B is injured and unable to continue. Player A's victory shall be recorded as 6-1, 6-0.

Acording to those rules Poland will advance to play off if :
NED will def. GBR 2-1 and when NED will win 4 sets and lose 4 as well (example: NED - GBR , 1st match 2-1, 2nd match 2-1, 3rd match 0-2) .
In this situation the number of sets lost between POL and NED will decide.
POL 14, NED 15.

If NED def GBR 2-1 or 3-0 GBR will be relegated acording to this rule :
iv) If three or more Nations score an equal number of points, the number of matches won shall decide the winner.
POL : 6 matches
GBR: 4 matches if 0-3 , 5 matches if 1-2
HOL : 6 matches if 2-1 , 7 matches if 3-0

GBR situation is funny , if they win tomorrow they are in play off, but if they lose they are relegated ....... LOL

There is no chance that Poland will be relegated .

NED must win to avoind being relegated.

I hope I didn`t make any mistakes;)
anyway good luck NETHERLANDS ;)

Good Luck GBR, you can do it. :D

And Jakub, the GBR situation isn't funny, it's bloody terrible, so they better win for the sake of British tennis & it's supporters!!!

I wonder why Anna P doesnt play doubles on the tour.......she won both the dubs matches she played this week so she can't be that BAD at it......anyone have any thoughts?

Maybe it would make her too tired for singles, since she expends so much energy over the course of her matches......

Kristie BOOGERT/ Miriam OREMANS (NED) d. Claire CURRAN/ Elsa ORIAIN (IRL) 60 60 :D;)

Oh my goodness how stupid.....

kristie/miriam lost to zarska/marta.....
YET marta/zarska lost to cliare/elsa BADLY
and NOW kristie/miriam double bagel claire/elsa

Well at least Poland wont be relegated. But it would be quite silly if Netherlands would advance as they lost to Poland and Hungary, and beat Britain and winless Ireland. So ironic how if GBR wins they would go to playoff and if they lose they get relegated. Poland I think has little shot of advancing to the playoffs, and even if they did I'm pretty sure that the likes of Amanda, Tzipora, Anna S...would beat them soundly lol.

One thing is for sure: Whoever is relegated to Group 2 will cream the group next year and advance to Group 1 yet again lol

Switzerland, Belarus, Yugoslavia, Israel, Hungary are in :)

Get up their Helvetia!!!! (Suisse) where you belong,
They seem (to me) to be heavily poised favourites, to advance into the next round. just as long as Patty and Emmanuelle stay Consitent

They bet Belarus, Emmanuelle a bit dissapointing, and Patty played well, and those 2 playing in doubles is quite fantastic to watch, they are quite complete, so I think Switzerland will get through, only team they might cause problems maybe Israel but Patty knows how to handle the Brick Wall, and to an extent Hungary with Petra, but no problem Patty can't handle :)

I wonder if their next round is played on Hard Courts  because thats where Myriam will do better on, keep going Myriam, keep getting fitter, you need to loose a few pounds more!!!

Keep going Patty and Emmanuelle! make Helvatia proud!

IMO, I think Domachowska/Sakowicz might be a better team. Zarska is ok, but after losing to Elsa Raine and Claire what ever her name is, Poland needs a new doubles team. I wonder why Jans or Straczy do not play.....but I sure hope marta/Joanna come through. If Petra plays, it will be extremely tough as she is an awesome doubles player!

It's Elsa O'Riain and Claire Curran - and they are a very good doubles team! No shame losing to them!
