Canada wins easily in Day One action at Fed Cup

CAMPINAS, Brazil (TC) – The Canadian Fed Cup team has started off strong in Day One action at the American Zone Group I round robin in Campinas, Brazil, blasting the Bahamas 3-0 and dropping only three games in the process. Canada now holds a career 2-0 win against the Caribbean country.

In the first match of the day, Jana Nejedly of Palm Springs, Calif., got the ball rolling with a quick 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Jessica Sweeting. Nejedly is No.177 on the WTA Tour, while Sweeting is currently unranked on the pro tour. Nejedly now holds a 16-6 singles record in Fed Cup, adding to her record of most singles victories for a Canadian in Fed Cup action.

In match two, Canada’s No.1 singles player, Maureen Drake of Toronto, topped Nikitta Fountain by the identical 6-0, 6-1 score. In doubles play, Toronto’s Vanessa Webb and Marie-Ève Pelletier of Repentigny, Que., dominated Fountain and Sweeting, 6-0, 6-1.

“We played the Bahamas last year, so we pretty much knew what to expect,” said Nejedly. “Obviously we’ve got a much stronger team on paper and a lot of other countries here don’t have that, but it’s still never easy to come out and play as well as we did.”

Canada’s next opponent is Uruguay, with play beginning Thursday at 9:00am EDT.

“We played Uruguay as well last year and they’ll be tough on clay,” said Nejedly. “We’ve got to take it one day at a time, but we’re all playing really well right now and we’ll be ready for whatever team we have to play.”

Canada, who holds a 4-0 record against the Uruguayans, is the top seed in its pool, along with the Bahamas, Uruguay and the third-seeded Mexicans. Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador and Paraguay make up the other pool. The top two teams in each pool advance to a playoff round this Saturday, with two winners advancing to a World Group Playoffs July 19-20. Stay tuned to www.tenniscanada.com for results."

Does the Bahamas have ANYONE that can give some competition?

Apr 23rd, 2003, 10:01 PM
Wow so Jana and Martina Nejedly do live in Palm Springs. I see Martina is entered in the annual Ojai tournament this week. Glad to see she is still playing too.

LOL!!! Canada, you rock!!! Win it all girlz! you have everything now to go in the world group!

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:22 PM
Migliarini de Leon is a good player. She qualified for Bogota this year. It's not a terrible loss for Torres.

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:29 PM
Considering Melissa has now lost 5 in a row, every one is terrible.

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:35 PM
7 matches Scott, counting her double baggel loss to Brandi in the central american games and her loss in 25k puebla.

I think is not a bad loss as their rank is about the same and Lucia had already beaten her in jrs, anyways Melissa should have won it considering she has had more experience in events like this.

I hope she plays tomorrow against Bahamas and maybe wins her match because her doubles win with Jessica is her first win singles/doubles in all year...

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:39 PM
If Melissa can't beat one of the Bahamas girls, she needs to think about another career

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:39 PM
and why aren't you on MSN :fiery:

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:43 PM
Remember Maria Jose lost to one Bahamian last year ;) and see her now, retired :p

Apr 23rd, 2003, 11:47 PM
and why aren't you on MSN :fiery:

What is your MSN scott?

Apr 24th, 2003, 02:28 AM
yeah Canada. weuheu

Apr 24th, 2003, 02:36 AM
Maria Jose retired? If she is I am very misinformed.
Well Done Mexico and Canada.

Apr 24th, 2003, 03:41 AM
There is a big rumor she retired, same as Lourdes

Erika Valdes plays NCAA now.

Cuba vs. El Salvador will finish their tie tomorrow as there was no natural light.

And for Scott ;) Melissa won't play tomorrow and will be substituted by Karin Palme :bounce:

Apr 24th, 2003, 08:29 AM
good luck mexico for tomorrow's matches! :)
