Hingis To Appear In Adidas Tennis Smash At Ocean Edge

By Richard Pagliaro
04/23/2003

Martina Hingis is making a tennis comeback for a cause this summer. The former No. 1, who announced her retirement from tennis on February 8th, will make her first American appearance on the court since last year's U.S. Open when she participates at the third annual adidas Tennis Smash at the Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, July 14-15th.

The five-time Grand Slam champion joins Rod Laver, Jan-Michael Gambill, Bob Bryan, Mike Bryan and Tom Gullikson in the celebrity tennis event to benefit the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation. Hingis is expected to participate in the tennis pro-am and possibly in one of the exhibition matches. Both the pro-am and the exhibition matches are scheduled for Tuesday, July 15th.

The 22-year-old Hingis, who reigned as the top-ranked player for 209 weeks, underwent two ankle surgeries in an eight-month span and said continuing pain in her feet prevents her from serious training.

The Swiss stylist who rose to the top of tennis at the youngest No. 1 at 16 years, six months and one day in 1997, continues the adidas Tennis Smash tradition of former top-ranked players. Former No. 1 Jim Courier appeared at the inaugural event in 2001, followed by a pair of former top-ranked players — Stefan Edberg and Stan Smith — who both participated last year. Laver has made an annual appearance at the event.

Whether her participation is a sign Hingis may play some select exhibitions in the future remains to be seen. But the appearance of Hingis, who has had little involvement in tennis since announcing her departure from the sport, is a major coup for the event.

The schedule for the 3rd annual adidas tennis smash is as follows:

Monday, July 14th

Jan-Michael Gambill junior tennis clinic (8 a.m. start)
Celebrity golf pro-am (11:30 a.m.)
Gala dinner reception and auction with Brett Haber of CBS Sports (6:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, July 15th

adidas tennis pro-am and awards luncheon (9 a.m.)
Exhibition matches (2 p.m. — ticket prices start at $25)

I knew she couldn't just move on from tennis and get a life. Now I will be the first to predict that this will be the first stepping stone to her comeback career in tennis. The aussie open 2004 will prob be on her schedule.... Does that mean her protected ranking has expired?

Her ranking, much like, say Anna Kournikova's, doesn't matter at all. At this point Hingis could wildcard her way into a men's tournament if she wanted to.
