Jelena is an all power baseliner. Yes she hits the odd dropshot, but her strategy every match is to whack the ball very hard.

And she used to succeed. But now there are many girls who either hit the ball as hard as Jelena and as consistently OR mix it up to the extent where she loses her rythmn and consistency.

Jelena's strokes are also very flat, there is no variety in them, and they can look fragile.

I think Jelena is an 8-12 player at best, until she improves her game, serve and movement. Yes she can move, but she isn't in the same league as Clijsters, Henin or Dementieva (her peers).

I think its half her head and half her game

Hitting hard and hitting flat just doesnt work unless your REALLY good at it (see Davenport) but even if you are, people are still going to beat you (see Davenport) and your really vulnerable to those who have variety (did i mention Davenport?)

These days, more of an all court game is required.
Look at the top 5 right now

You mean, the top five, which includes davenport in spite of all her vulnerability?

LMAO, not in the same league as Dementieva. hah that made me laugh. when you compare the 2, Dokic wipes the floor with her. nothing is wrong with Jelena. she's just in a rough patch, and stop it with these threads. everyone goes throuhg rough patches and some are always stuck in rough patches, ie. Stevenson. so just relax, calm down and she'll jump out of the rought patch.

Probably a combination of all those things is why Jelena is struggling...

And it's stupid to compare Jelena to Alyona...

CJ07
Apr 22nd, 2003, 11:23 PM
yes

because shes really really good at it
but notice that she is at the bottom of that list, and more likely than not, she'll stay there

Maybe she will, maybe she won't. I still don't think she's playing like she did before her injury. When and if she does, she won't stay at #5.

I only compared Elena to Jelena regarding movement. Its wise to re-read the statement before making an unfair assumption. :)

comparing Elena and Jelena is justified actually
Jelena has just been the overachiever

I just read Naldo's post comparing Jelena and Elena. :)

I don't believe in the word "overachiever". Either you win, or you don't...

She overplays WAY too much.

She's probably personally happier now than she's ever been though. She's young, pretty, and rid of Dracula daddy. Perhaps she's content with her lot and not motivated to do what's needed to go further.

So... in effect, you're saying Jelena and Alyona are near the same skill level... but Jelena has accomplished more.

I disagree... but that's just me. :p

She doesn't generate enough power to play the way she does.

I thibk that she started later that everyone and she can't catch the rythm. She play one great match and that lose a match so badly.

i believe so
Jelenas serve is a bit better, Elena moves better
but other than that, yeah

She doesn't generate enough power to play the way she does.

Bingo

"shes an overachiever compared to Dementieva"

if youre gonna speak in relative terms i could list so many more OVERachievers compared to elena ;).

BTW - Jelena did beat her within the last two weeks. Just to clarify and has won their last few meetings.....

just to clarify, Elena hasnt beaten Jelena since 2000 Olympics. and one time b4 that., which is ok given Jelena was ranked in the 20/30's around then and Dementieva was Top 20. But after that Jelena has one the last 5 or 6 times.

I voted other, i think she just needs to get used to her new game. She said 6 months ... its been 3 .... everyone expected too much too soon.

Jelena has won the last five times, but all but one have been tight 3 setters. If they played now, I think everyone knows who would win... :)

If Elena can go from average to great in one week, their is no doubt she can go from great to average in another.

Dokic is going through a rough patch. That's really it. Disappointing last several months but people go through that. Dementieva has ahd a disappointing couple of years and now she won a title over 3 top 10s. so jelena is just trying to find her groove again.

Oh please, rough patches don't last 6 months!
There's really something wrong with her, and the fans should be the first to notice it!

well what else is it? if dementieva can find her game to defeat daniela, justine, and lindsay consecutively who are all ranked above her, why can't jelena, who i think has more explosiveness in her.

Has her game declined or is the problem that she has failed to progress?? I don't watch enough of her to know.

I think she's simply not good enough...
I have never been impressed by her play.
For all the titles she has won, she didn't beat many big names. I don't expect her to be back in top 5 or even top 10.

I think Jelena has a very shaky self-confidence. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I always find that she looks "happy" on the court...She seems to be a pretty unhappy young girl..I guess her family situation is not helping much. Also, I think she has been overrated over the past couple of years...

Looking at some of her games, from the pass, there starting to look very 1-dimensional to me from what they were in 2000/2001, Nothing really has changed in her game. It was a game which was just behind the 8-Ball, it rose fast when she shocked Martina at Wimbledon and results before that, but then was pocketed fast as well, and the evidence was visual, you could notice it that it was a style of game which could be overcome by many overtime. She hasn't lived up to her potential IMO, and is just in a part of life where she is confused/trying to figure out life on a basis, and her attitude towards tennis. Even if Damir was boisterous, I think Jelena was comfortable with his unique style of support that reflected on her. Just Basically Girl Problems shes experiencing,

(although I don't know how much longer I can continue to believe this, the length of dissapointing results making my analysis irrelevant)
