Johannesburg - South Africa start their Fed Cup Europe/Africa Regional Qualifying Group 1 Challenge in Lisbon, Portugal when they take on Denmark in their first round robin group match on Tuesday.

Seeded third behind Switzerland and Israel, South Africa have been drawn into the group with Denmark, Romania and Ukraine. Other countries participating are Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Georgia, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland and Yugoslavia.

Amanda Coetzer, seeded 18 on the WTA rankings will spearhead the challenge. Coetzer and Chani Scheepers ranked at 165 will in all probability play the singles matches. Liezel Huber, ranked 16 on the WTA doubles ranking will be partnered by either Jessica Steck or Coetzer. Roxanne Clarke is the fifth member of the team.

Captain Mariaan de Swardt was upbeat about her teams chances in this year's Fed Cup competition "I am happy with the draw" said de Swardt from Lisbon. "All our top players have made themselves available for this first all important tie of the competition. Amanda's commitment is great motivation for all the girls."

The tie will be played from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the top two teams in each pool will progress to a play-off. The four winners will proceed to the World Group Play-Offs on July 19 and 20 in home and away ties. Qualifiers of these ties will be promoted to the World Group in 2004.
