Zvonareva, Baker Sign With Adidas

Vera Zvonareva and Ally Baker have yet to break into the WTA Tour's top 20, but both have already earned their professional stripes. The two teenagers, who are both represented by SFX Tennis, have signed multi-year shoe and clothing contracts with adidas.

The distinctive adidas three-striped brand is a popular presence on the professional tennis circuit as Anna Kournikova, Martina Hingis, Chanda Rubin, Marat Safin, Paradorn Srichaphan, Tim Henman and Guillermo Coria are among the current and former players who endorse adidas.

The 28th-ranked Zvonareva, who formerly wore Nike, also signed a racquet contract with the Austrian company Fischer.

The 17-year-old Baker also agreed to a multi-year racquet contract with French racquet maker Babolat. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

SFX Tennis president Ken Meyerson told The SportBusiness Journal's Liz Mullen that all four contracts feature base guarantee payments with performance-based bonuses that could substantially increase the value of each deal.

The 18-year-old Zvonareva is widely regarded as a player with a promising future. The hard-hitting Moscow native concluded the 2002 season with a 41-14 record and a year-end ranking of No. 45, which was an improvement of 342 places from her 2001 year-end rank. She's started the 2003 season strong, scoring wins over Meghann Shaughnessy and Ivan Majoli this season and reaching the quarterfinals of the Pacific Life Open before falling to Jennifer Capriati. Earlier this month, she advanced to the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

"I think Vera really has a shot to be a top 10 player this year or next," Meyerson told Mullen. "Ally, because she is so young, she has a shot at being in the top 30 in the next 18 months to two years."

SFX Tennis also announced it has signed Australian Open quarterfinalist Younes El Aynaoui to an exclusive representation contract.

Ally has alot of potential...but she has been injured for the better part of two years...I dont know what kind of future she has given the fact that she is only 17 and has already had TWO Knee surgeries :(

Hmmm. I saw Ally at the Cortec Challenger this year. She hung around with Cochran a lot. Both seemed to be a bit big headed off the court. As they walked by the court heads turned, and it seemed as if they knew it. Not terribly impressed. Also very loud during a warm-up during a match near the other court with Shenay and Renata. Oh well...Best of luck to both...

I wonder if Kevin Wolfe helped sign them. Didn't he leave the WTA to go back to pimp'n, I mean working for Adidas. He used to be an exec at Nike.
