Unfortunately it looks as though my favorite player has gained weight again  It must be tough for Monica to keep the weight off consistently...If Monica is going to win another slam she has to whip herself back to shape...agree or disagree?

I actually didn't think the match was that exciting...but maybe it's because the channel I was watching it on had some pretty crappy footage (the tape was really poor quality)

Yeah, Monica really looked sluggish out there, and neither were hitting tha ball that hard, they were just trying to get it in.

I thought the doubles match was more exciting.:o

Did anyone see Venus/Jana and Seles and Serena?

It was Venus / Brenda Schultz-McCarthy vs. Serena / Novotna. ;)

They only showed it from 5-5 on.

It was a good match, more exciting then the singles.

Brenda still has that booming serve, Jana still has the great hands. They had some good exchanges.

Venus' second serve seemed deeper, and faster, and flatter. She really drilled a backhand at the feet of Jana, and Jana miraculously got it back for a drop winner. It was amazing. And Venus was really attacking the serves.

Brenda was the weakest link of the all. She made the most errors, but she did really well. Her serve is great, very much like Venus'.

Jana, I must say, did look a lot older, but she did look very fit. Those hands of her are just amazing.

Monica was good as umpire, but she seemed she was gonna fall asleep half the time. She kept referring to Brenda as Schultz-McCartney.

Well, Monica looked normal moving against Henin-Hardenne...still not moving great(sometimes stopping like in Charleston last yr.) and not bad(got to the norm balls)

Monica was very cute as a chair umpire...

Yeah but you also have to wonder if the only reason why monica played that exhibition was because the fans would get mad.....for all we knew serena and monica had that deal made out...just so monica could play, and not dissapoint her fans.....The next day she pulled out of charleston...So obvisouly she was not feeling that great......Who wants to watch a Serena Brenda match when you paid for a Serena MOnica match????

Poor Monica. She will never get back to the shape that she needs to be in. She tried very hard, but it just seems to be beyond her. It's hard to lose weight. I found out receantly that when you gain weight, the numebr of fat cells in your body increases, and that no matter what you do you can't lower their number, just their size.

I thought the match was rather boring. Monica didn't run for a lot balls that I tought she could have gotten to. It probably had to do with the injury, I don't know, but it wasn't like the last time they played in Toronto.

Now the doubles I thought was fun. It was nice to see Venus cracking a smile every now and then while playing, they all looked sort of relaxed and having fun.

I was surprised how thin and fit Jana was. She's aged a little, but still looks great and can serve big and volley as good as ever. I think she could still kick some butt on the tour.

Monica was funny as the chair umpire, she made a mistake or something and everybody was laughting.

i just watched the jp morgan tennis challenge. it was shown only today in star sports. i enjoyed it because obviously my monica is playing. monica is very funny being the chair umpire. and she's always smiling whenever the camera was focused on her. what a lovely smile.

I agree but this is and old and well discussed topic, i mean she has wasted all her talent by not training as she should have, she would have won many slams, but with that movement :s. So it has been a weakness for her for like 7 years?

In Toronto Monica was coming from probably playing some of her best tennis (July-August 2001) beating Hingis, Jennifer, Serena, Henin, Dokic, Shaugnessy in that period. Serena was coming out from that low period when she had shoked some of her recent loses by that time, it was really Toronto`s win that put her on the track of being the player MENTALLY she now is. So this 2003 we have a diferent Serena and a diferent Seles, opossite ways :s.

Has she gained weight, or was this just a case of camera angles and clothing letting us see her actual size and shape?

:) :) :)
Serena played very very well in this match.
She served well, great backhand, unbeliveble moving.
She ran so fast and saved many Monica's winners.
In addition, she played net points very well. She got a very good vally skill right now.I think that she did improve herself a lot.
Now in her games, we can see a lot of skills, not only powers.
i think she got a great chance to defend her RG crowd on clay now!!!
:D :D :D
