I'm only 16 and have been following Tennis for a couple of years.

Did Mary Pierce ever represent Canada or consider representing Canada? Also, did Greg Rusedski ever win a title while representing Canada? thanks

We Need a decent player! LOL

as far as I know, Mary did not ever consider representing Canada. remember, she was born in Montreal, but only spent about 9 months living in Canada. Plus, I don't believe she is a Canadian citizen, is she?

I'm less sure about rusedski. I don't think he had a title under his belt before his switch to Great Britain, but of course, I might be wrong.

I'm pretty sure Mary never represented Canada... even in her glasses' days.

I think Greg did win as Canadian, a few times actually. He won the Hall of Fame tourney in '93, so I'm fairly sure he did.

That's the ONLY thing I never liked about Mary. She's Canadian, who lives in the US, yet plays for France.

Sure, I know her mom is French, but still, she never lived there.

She should have played for either the US or Canada.

But then, I still love Mary, so, whatever she does is fine with me.:)

I think she wanted to represent America but the USTA did not support her and France offered her support and she played for them. Something like that, I don't remember the whole story.

Mary was born in Canada, and that gave her the Canadian citizenship. She has American citizenship because her father is American, and French because her mother is French.

Mary *did* play for the United States at first, but the USTA refused to support her, and she went to France because they were willing to pay the high amounts of money necessary to make her a professional tennis player.

Her playing for France is the only honorable thing to do, in my opinion. They helped her when she needed it, so she plays for them. Seems good enough for me.

Her decision to play for France instead of USA is due to the fact that her family felt the USTA jilted her and put ALL of their time, focus, energy, and backing into another teen-wannabe.... Jennifer Capriait. Allegedly Papa Pierce was so angry with the USTA (go figure, he was mad...) he pulled Mary out of the development program and asked the French Tennis Federation to help her with her game and sponsorship.

Thanks Seles. I forgot about the Jen part. :)

Too bad she never played for Canada. With Canada having so few good tennis players, she would have had huge support. Her loss.

That was the best drama of their Roland Garros meeting (which Jen won in like no time flat). I remember the cameras panning from Papa Pierce to Papa Capriati, apparently Papa Pierce made some nasty comment about that Mary would clean Jennifer's clock. He also threatened a fan in the stands that year. What a drama queen... Mary is so much better with him not in the picture.

What is up with fucked up tennis dad's anyway?? (Karolj Seles not withstanding).

I do remember that story Jim Pierce was a nut. Karolj Seles was so cool, he actually enjoyed the game of tennis, I liked the way he would applaud enthusiastically when Monica's opponent hit winners. :)

[QUOTE='Seles']Mary is so much better with him not in the picture. [QUOTE]

If you're speaking of her personal well-being with that statement, then that is probably right. if you're speaking of her game, I would have to argue with that.

Well, I know Rusedski defected because he had big problems with the canadian Tennis Association (whatever it's called). He felt he did not get enough support from them, which is a common refrain amongst canada's tennis professionals. I'm sure that's why Jim Pierce never considered having his daughter play under the Canadian flag. He must've known our national organization could never or would never pony up the dollars its American or French counterparts could. It's a shame .... but I think the blame for the state of canadian tennis has to go to the national federation. It sucks. lol.

As KL said, it would have made no sense for Mary to come to Canada and play because the USTA wasn't supporting her. The funds were/are not available here to give her what she would have needed to become the player that she did.

I read somewhere that her mother was in trip at Montreal as tourist while she was born there. The family never lived in Canada.
