BARCELONA -- Anjelica de la Courtiere, speaking from the site of the upcoming Federation Cup tie against Spain, announced concern over the rising tax rates levied on her by the Canadian government.

"Since I became a citizen, I pay now 15% more in taxes than I used to. Nearly 55% of the money I earn on the tour is taken away by the Canadian government," said de la Courtiere.

It has been noted that the government of Mexico recently approached de la Courtiere, offering her citizenship and a special 10% tax rate. This is not the first instance of Mexico recruiting a tennis player. Two years ago, Mexican government officials approached and successfully convinced junior tennis and Mexican Federation Cup star Zerene Fernandez to leave her home country of Belize and play for Mexico.

"It was a business deal, Mexico could better represent my interests and I had to pay far less in taxes," said Fernandez. "I find it's a better working environment for me."

It is unknown if de la Courtiere will accept the Mexican offer. Her agents have told the Canadian Press that her immediate concerns are focused on the Federation Cup match with Spain, and then she wants to prepare for the remaining three grand slams this year. However, sources close to the tennis star have reported saying that de la Courtiere was seriously considering the offer.

Certainly, nation-hoping is nothing new for de la Courtiere, who in 2001 changed her nationality from French to Canadian after having lived in the country while she was playing and after having become close to Canadian player Eva Sorrenta.

Eva Sorrenta's agents and Canadian officials could not be reached for comment, but the Mexican government denied allegations that de la Courtiere would receive special treatment. "Taxes here are just lower," said Mexican Finance Minister Francisco Gil Diaz.

Is that so :D

And for those that think Anjelica is evil, last year she gave 80% of her prize money to charity, including the big contribution to the Unity Cup, right Ruffy? ;)

liar, if you donate 80% to charity, usually you are exempt, which means that if you donate the money to an offical registered charity, you are not required to declare the money you donate as taxable income ;)

Anjie needs to stop sending her paychecks to all these charities, and give a little to her own son who is being deprived because of low income at the moment :p

Charity starts at home, as they say ;)
