at the level where Elena won it? (Of course there's a sort of "dividing line" between Tier II and the three "lower rungs", where presumably most players get their "maiden win". (Now, now, that's a real term in horseracing, which even has "maiden races" for ones who haven't won before)! ;) So all you "tennis encyclopedia's" like Brian Stewart, The Boiled Egg, etc.: what are some other cases (in the Open Era) where somebody's first win was a Tier II? A Tier I? (And I'll faint if someone did it in a Grand Slam)!

Well, Hantuchova won IW Tier I as the first Title, but opposition was not nearly as strong as in Dementieva's win. Dokic won Rome as the first title , by beating Mauresmo in the final, but even then, I think, Elena faced a tougher road. Of course, if Anna had not cracked under pressure back in 1998 at Lipton final, that would be nearly unbeatable..

Hantuchova's first title came at Indian Wells a tier 1.

Dokic's first title came at Rome a tier 1.

I'm sure there are many more, I don't think what Dementieva did is rare, it came at a tier 2...

Serena won the Open Gaz de France Tier 2 Tournament and then won IW aged 17

(From Spirit and Jacub) At 15, Monica Seles beat Christ Evert 3-6 6-1 6-4, in the 1989 Virginia Slims of Houston Final, her first ever Final....

Virginia Ruzici won her very first title at Roland Garros in 1978 over Mima Jausovec. Ruzici won 8 titles after winning RG.

Jausovec coincidentally, won her first title at Roland Garros in 1977. She only won 2 other titles.

It's not on the WTA, but Kuerten's first title was Roland Garros in 97.

And he beat the three last winners of the tournament (Kafelnikov, Muster and Bruguera) on the way.

Pff.:p Knowing Ruzici and Mima are one-slam wonders has come in handy once or twice.:p:angel:

And I just went to tennis corner to look those things up, I ONLY knew Ruzici's win off by heart.:p
