In june, we'll see the end of an era. Kim Clijsters, the last teenager in the top ten will turn 20. And there's no one knocking on the door. OTOH, the elite of the tour is quite young. Here are the ages of the top sixteen ranked players in the world.

21 Williams
19 Clijsters
22 Williams
20 Henin
27 Davenport
27 Capriati
23 Mauresmo
27 Rubin
20 Hantuchova (in two days, 04-23-83)
21 Mykina
20 Dokic
43 Seles
21 Dementieva
28 Maleeva
20 Daniilidou
20 Bovina

11 of these 16 players are between 19 and 23. That's the heart of the tour, post-2005. Interesting distribution of ages. Big cluster of players at 20 and 21.

1 - 19
5 - 20
3 - 21
1 - 22 (+ Hingis)
1 - 23

0 - 24
0 - 25
0 - 26
3 - 27
2 - 28+

That made me laugh.

Didn't you used to cease being a "teenager" at 21? And isn't it 18 these days?

I miss those days, the start of the careers of Hingis, Venus, Serena, Anna...

And Wimbledon 99....Dokic, Lucic and Stevenson. No-one noticed Kim going to the quarters ;)

It's weird, when you look at it, they are still young, but they have been around for ages, they seem to be older!

Kim didn't quite reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon that year. She made it to the Round of 16, beating Amanda Coetzer and losing 6-2, 6-2 to Steffi Graf. Graf told her afterwards that she played the tennis of the future.
Kim reached the quarterfinals in 2001 and lost in the second round in 2000 and 2002.

does anyone know when was the last time that there were no teenagers in the top 10?? It had to be before Graf era, I think :o

Gotta go back at least until the '70s... Jaeger was in the Top 10 for quite a while.

Clijster made the round of 16 at Wimby 1999, not the QF's

I agree.....so many of them burst into the top ranks at such young ages, I continually have to remind myself that Kim is only 19 years old.
