Dementieva Downs Davenport To Win First Career Title At Amelia Island

By Tennis Week
04/20/2003

Elena Dementieva proudly clutched the crystal trophy to her heart and beamed the bright satisfied smile of a first-time champion.

For much of today's Bausch & Lomb final, the 10th-seeded Russian trailed Lindsay Davenport. Dementieva's determination in playing catch-up helped her capture her first career championship with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory.

The match lasted two hours and six minutes, but the memory will last a lifetime. Dementieva rallied from a 4-6, 2-4 deficit to win five of the next six games and seize the second set, 7-5.

Empowered by evening the match, she started to hit out decisively on her favored forehand in the final set and took charge to take the title.

This is a wonderful surprise considering how
75% of people on this web board, and the
tennis world sort of wrote Elena off as
a 1 year wonder.

The tour is getting very interesting this year.

Elena is a true Russian sportsman, and for Russian sportsmen Olympics is the ultimate goal. Female-athletes always choose the start of Olympic cycle as time to relax, perhaps even give a birth. But they always gear up in pre-Olympic season and will be all guns blazing next year.;)

I know I'm always way late on these congratulatory threads but..
congrats to elena.
I really wasn't sure what the outcome of this match would be.. but was leaning in favor of Lindsay, just given her overall better career. But all props to Elena who really held in there and fought till the end.
good for her.
better luck next time ms. lindsay...
