View Full Version : All Props To Dementiva, But Did Anyone Else Think Davenport Just Ran Out of Gas?

Elena played out of her mind tennis
she just outplayed davenport
actually, Davenport lost serve like 5 or 6 straight times, and she faced breakpoints in like 85% of her service games
Elena played sooo well. And even with that serve she can easily get to #8 or so in the world. And its obvious shes working on it, so I dont see why she cant fulfill her potential of a top 5 player by late next year.

I may be jumping ship, but that was the best match ive seen in quite a while. Her forehand is just rediculous, its literally a missle. Her backhand is one of the best in the business, so much for Hantuchova (whom Elena gave her worst loss to) having the better backhand.

I dont want to jump on her bandwaggon or anything, but im really starting to like this girl. She beat 4 top 15 players in a row, 3 top 10ers, all of whom have been in the top5

Congratulations Elena, and may this be the first of your many, many, titles. (Just dont beat my V again)
Also, hopefully that other blonde russian will get some inspiration ;)

but didnt it look like Davenport was just exhausted? That match went 2 hours, 15 minutes about...the norm for a 3 set clay court match. Davenport was playing really really well, and then all of a sudden it seemed like she said, "ok, your just too good. I just dont have the energy to win this match" then she just kind of made some stupid errors, without getting frustrated at all (which was the green light for me) and just shook hands.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Alyona, who really proved that shes a top 5 candidate (if she continues to work on her serve) but it seems like Lindsay just gave up there. While she has gotten more fit, if she has any plans to go into the second week at RG she has more work to do.

Absoulty Elena just hit every ball back, which is why Lindsay crashed and burned, it happened when she was 3-2 up, it was just so noticable.

definately

she was playing really well, and then it was like she just realized that Elena was just too good

Yep, I agree as well.

But I think Daniela has the better backhand by far. I have to see more from Elena than just this match. Personally what I found was that Elena uses her court coverage as a huge weapon. She was playing like ASV out there! With pace!

Lindsay was tired from all the running around.. Elena took it to her.

It was evident that Lindsay was getting tired but so was Elena! Lindsay wasn't the only one who played a long match yesterday. In truth, it surprised me because I actually expected Lindsay to get tired a lot earlier then when she did. Looked like she really wanted to win this title and I think the way Elena brought all the balls back that Lindsay threw at her frustrated Lindsay to go for something more! And that's what clay does it gives you an extra step and like Pam said Elena's pretty quick in that first step. :)

nah i think Linzi was well beaten.

since when has Linzi been the fastest etc in a match ;)

her body language is poor (again) and she was walking a bit like she hurt herself

Elena gave the performance of a lifetime and im so happy for my second fave Elena (and Russian ;))

that was the best match (quality wise) i have seen all year (overtaking Venus-Kim in Antwerp)

btw ive always thought Venus had the best backhand in the business  then Dani ;)

i think Elenas is good but not as good as those two. her f/h on the other end is brutal (ive used that word too many times talking about her game today lol)

If you ask me Dementieva studied a tape of Kim Clijsters beating Davenport. Clisters has learned how to weather the storm against Davenport, now Dementieva and others will try to follow in her footsteps.

That is a good analogy, DR, "weathering the storm" against Davenport. Dementieva did indeed weather the storm and stepped up her game when needed.

Lindsey's record in finals is not improving.

To be fair I think that Elena had a good game plan and surprisingly it was a page out of Justine's book, one in which she used to defeat serena last week. I think the thing was never to give up and keep the match as close as possible. I think Elena kept it close and waited for Lindsay to make the error.

Elena played a good game and I give her credit for a much hard earned title. This is sweeter than Daniela's victory last year at Indian Wells because Elena had to defeat the top players therefore it wasn't like the field was depleted in talent. I give her so much credit and hope she wins many more. Just when you thought tennis was predictable then someone comes by and surprise you.

I find these stories enlightening because I thought it was gonna be a dull winner with the higher seed winning.....Like Ai winning Scottsdale I find these things so entertaining....damm I love tennis and Elena's winning is a reason why. The sweet taste of tennis.

Elena played well, but so did Lindsay. Except that at a tournament like this to play a full week of singles and doubles, and for it not to affect at all your performance in the singles finals, you probably have to be named Williams..

Definitely.

But only because Elena made Lindsay run loads, hit an extra ball extra. I think both mentally and physically, Lindsay began to lose the edge.

Elena played too good, her court covergae was exceptional and her groundies and returns were lethal! She didn't give an inch to Lindsay and just stunned her with some smart and excellent power play.

Also Lindsay won the dubs title, that energy came back pretty quick!! Lets give credit to Elena, she gave Lindsay a true workout!! :)

I think Davenport is never one to have gas for a long time. She will run out of it and from there it's just sheer luck if she can keep on. Elena was unbelievable. Her groundstrokes are magnificently precise. I mean she can really blow people away with that forehand and her backhand is among the best in the world. I mean I think Justine and Venus still has the best backhand but Elena's forehand can so keep up with Jenn's and Kim's.

What was great about this match is that Elena's mental game was tough. She didn't give up. I mean why should she? She defeated the #1 seed yesterday!!

The thing with Davenport is that she might have expected to play someone like Jenn who will let her get away with some winners. Elena ran her ass off!!!

Elena has improved her BH alot...its definitely better than Dani's. Elena's is more explosive...she can do alot more with it...

This match totally proved that Elena has been working on her game...Her technique on her serve is still flawed, but she played with alot of smarts today...something she never did before...she was a bang bang girl with no tactics...she had alot today and she stuck with them even after losing the first set...

She did what Jen failed to do...play offense

Davenport hit balls al round the court but Elena hit most of them straight back, forcing Davenport to run round alot, which she doesn't like doing.
When Davenport won her 3rd game in the 3rd set she just ran out of energy. Elena had made her run too much and she just couldn't take anymore.

Lena beat Davenport with Lindsay at the top of her game. Davey rocked the house all week, blowing the competition away. Against Lena Davey was doing the same thing, clocking winners all over the place, but Lena was a mental giant out there and she stuck with her game plan.
If Lindsay doesn't hit a winner after about four tries during a point, she usually gets discouraged and makes an error, and she doesn't run that hard if you can get her on the defense. Lena knew this, and she also knew that the pattern of forehand to forehand favored her, and she won a bunch of points on those crosscourt exchanges.

Dementieva stepped it up to a level that no one expected. She would have beaten Venus and Serena playing that well. It is performances like this that make tennis exciting to watch.

vogus, Serena and Venus are not Lindsay. Now I don't think she would have beaten Serena nor Venus the way she played today. We'll never know for sure, but imho I think Serena especially would that waxed the behind.:):)

Venus and Serena can run, have speed and play offense and defense as well. Elena played great, but Lindsay had her until 4/2 in second set, she was getting tired.

Bottom Line: Elena kept her out there, made her play each ball.

i'm happy for dementieva because she has been figuratively m.i.a. these last two years. however, as impressive as her forehand is (one of the best of current players), i wish she would work on bringing more variety to her game. she has a solid doubles ranking, doesn't she? i've never seen her play doubles but i can only presume she stays back most of the time so she should work on moving forward more. when i've seen her play live, she always seem petrified to come in and when she did, she botched some easy volleys. best of luck to her the rest of the year.

Lindsey is not a fighter. If that was Jen she would have gone all out to win that final. And don't even talk about Serena and her fighting spirit she would not have given up. Lindsey just gave, and you know what, she will never win another GS with that attitude. 1. she moves like a snail, 2. she looks like she does not want to be out there playing and 3. she is not ambitious on court. She should take a leaf out out Serena and Venus's book now they are true champions.

Davenport was tired from the first ball of that match and it was VISIBLE!!!She played 3 sets against Capriati and also doubles match on Saturday ...Also she naglected Elena and was sure that she MUST win without much work-that's the reason.Of course Elena played really good tennis but Lindsay played maybe at 50% comparing it to other matches she played earlier this week...

did you see any of the other matches??? she's been playing fucking great this week, and do you seriously think that a snail that doesn´t want to play tennis would have won each of her three first matches in less than 45 minutes on clay, and then go and win a three set battle over Jennifer Capriati in the semis, Give me a friggin break!!!!

If she was so tired then why did she play a doubles match after the singles final and won that one? Also, Im sure she wouldn't neglect Elena because Elena beat Lindsay twice before and their last encounter before the final went 3 sets! And IMO Lindsay played mostly the same like when she played Jennifer but Elena moved faster and was hitting more winners then Jenny did.

You know Im starting to think that Lindsay fans are letting their anger out because Lindsay hasn't been winning the finals she SHOULD have. And that could be right but Elena defnitely deserved THIS one..

Yeah you are right, Lindsay hasn't been winning the finals she should have but must to add:because she played WORST tennis I have seen from her in 2003 and I said that already:Elena deserved this win because Lindsay didn't want to win this! And the most annoying thing is this talking:Lindsay played great bla bla bla ble-she gave that match to Elena and Elena take this as good as she can! I think that Lindsay's ambitions ending when she reaches finals-she is happy when she achieve this part of tournament and thinks that she can win a final without moving on the court! It's sad :(
And I am angry because after watching Lindsay's previous matches I was 1000000000% sure that she must win this tournament in 2 easy sets...so now I am shocked and dissapointed...................................... ..............................................

how can you say that Lindsy played bad? She played as good as she could play, the same or better as the other matches that she won. She pounded the ball into the corner every chance she got and hit 45 winners. She just got beat by a better player on the day. Why make excuses?

please stop trying to discredit elena's win over lindsay by comming up with lame excuses. that's such a low blow by a sore loser. it was a great match lindsay played really well as far as i could see and she was putting the pressure on elena. elena just went up another level during the match and kept it close. elena did what schnyder and capriati didn't do, elena ran the balls down and prevented her from getting easy winners. patty and jenn did not even bother running after lindsay's shot and kept giving her the winners elena didn't do that: she ran her ass off and returned almost every ball even harder at lindsay and lindsay couldn't handle it. elena was the better player today: lindsay did a good job also playing magnificent tennis but she just ran out of gas. who would have guessed?!

I am not trying to discredit Elena-I said that she deserved this title but sorry, I am a Lindsay fan since 1999, I have almost everyone her match on tape- I can compare yestarday's match to other her matches played in last 4 years...Are you a Lindsay's fan?How many Lindsay's matches have you seen???How you can say that Lindsay played really well? Have you ever seen Lindsay's match in which Lindsay played "really well"???I don't think so...Yesterday Lindsay played not better than at 70% She can play at 100% if she is not tired and really want to win...Yesterday she didn't want to chase balls in the FIRST set-it's not normal after what she showed earlier this week...And how you can say that Lindsay played well-have you seen Lindsay's returns from Elena's 60 mph serves???Well playing Lindsay will kill it not packing in the net!Lindsay played whole match like a half sleeping... So guys...you should watch Lindsay matches from the past and look at the "magnificent" "really well" playing Lindsay and after that we can talk...

I don't think that matters because Lindsay said herself that she's playing arguably the best tennis of her career. I mean clay was never her best surface and she's at a final so I'm going to conceded that although i haven't seen many tennis matches of lindsay I will say that this season was her best on clay. She played a great match against Jenn and Patty. And from what I saw, she played the same way, the same level, the same game plan with Elena. Elena just did what Jenn and Patty didn't do and that is why Elena beat Lindsay.

Did she say that yesterday?"Today I played the best match of my career" "I played perfectly,I do everything but I lost"" My serve was the best I can make, return was the best, groundstrokes are the best,my moving was the best I can do but Elena was too good" - like she said after match against Schnyder? If she said-O.K. - she knows yourself better and you are right and I am wrong-so did she say that?

Elena won fair and square. She played the ENTIRE match better than Lindsay.

Lindsay came out smoking, but Elena stayed with her. AT 2/4 down Elena was fitter and took it to a tired Lindsay!

DEETHELICK
Apr 21st, 2003, 11:46 PM
Lindsay herself said that Elena's play and fatigue were the decisive factors.

Even when Lindsay was tired, she was still smacking that ball, 100 MPH+ serves and awesome groundies, Elena just had all the answers.

In her video interview, she practically says all the above.

Elena also could be suffering fatigue, playing both singles and doubles at Sarasota (QFs), Charleston (3rd round, doubles semis) and now Amelia. And she played both IW and Miami too!!

If Lindsay wanted that title, she would have stepped it up even more, but Elena was just too hot.

I feel bad for Lindsay, but its time to accept this loss. Elena isn't no Maggie or Patty, she has beaten Lindsay before and knows how to play her.
