View Full Version : I'm bummed for Lindsay.......

Apr 20th, 2003, 08:25 PM
I am bummed that Lindsay has lost another final. It just wasn't meant to be. Had a feeling she was gonna have a let down in the final but I kept hoping it wasn't gonna be.

Got to give Elena props though, she did not wilt and kept up with Lindsay. So good job in her winning her first title.

Im GLAD she got beat! She beat Jen so she deserves it! *wink*

Apr 20th, 2003, 08:45 PM
She got outplayed today!

She never mixed up her first serve...
She never figured out how to handle elena's slow serve consistently...
Her forehand let her down...
Elena exposed her lack of good movement...
She was not aggressive enough...
She never changed her gameplan...

Apr 20th, 2003, 08:51 PM
Elena just out played Lindsay today, she just had nothing left absoluty nothing.

Apr 20th, 2003, 08:51 PM
Agreed. The fact she smacked so many unforced errors, probably more than in her entire first four matches, did her in.

Elena definitely kept it cleaner.

lindsay played crap, she should have closed it out in the second but didnt. sure im disappointed but it would have been worse had she played good tennis

elena deserved to win, she played one hell of a match

Apr 20th, 2003, 09:00 PM
You don't hit 42 winners by playing crap. She just let down in the end.

Apr 20th, 2003, 09:03 PM
yeah but how many ue's? way too many :(

she did let down in the end, she got frustrated and tired, but i still think she definitely didnt play anywhere near her best tennis today..

Linzi's been changing coaches too often. I don't know if Van't Hof really DID recommend her fiancee's brother, or it was a cover story, but she better hope she got it right this time.

This is a good win for the demented diva.

But I was cheering for Davey. She now has a 38-30 (?) record in finals.

Hopefully, she'll start playing more bruising tennis and dominate in finals like she has in matches leading up to finals.

I'm happy, though, that Dementieva has won her first WTA title.

Apr 20th, 2003, 11:33 PM
I don't think it really matters that much. After all, she is still reaching the finals of plenty of tournaments.

Basically I am fine with Lindsay's performance.
But I can't forgive her making two incredibly stupid errors in the 3rd set which really decided the match.
The first one at 3-3 deuce: an easy putaway into the open longline court. Lindsay hammers it cross-court and wide.
The second one at 3-4 break-point down: a rather easy longline backhand into the open court. Lindsay puts it into the net.

This just indicates that she doesn't have a "winning" mentality right now. No real confidence in these tight situations. If she had it she would have broken again for 5-2 in the second set or at least broken for 5-4. Instead she helped Elena to be on a roll for the rest of the match.
Lindsay never really dominated the match which would have been necessary (and she could have done it, especially by consistently punishing Elena's serve). And we have seen the same thing in many, many finals now. This is damn annoying and gives me no confidence that Lindsay will be a real threat at the upcoming slams.

Don't be bummed. :)

Lindsay started great until 6-4 4-2

Then Elena decided to step it up and started making Lindsay work harder, whilst also playing amazing tennis.

Its difficult to keep up with that, but Lindsay hit a lot of winners, but so did Elena.

Elena got on a roll towards the end, more a result of being so aggressive rather than Lindsay playing like shite. Also Elena really tired her, some of the rallies were  especially in terms of power hitting.

I agree that losses to Maggie and Patty, even Monica were unexpected because she had a matchpoint and had a very good record against them all.

Elena said herself she knew how to play Lindsay, which she did. That's all.

Lindsay has been playing well lately, wait for the grass and hardcourt season, you Lindsay fans will be loving it! :)

Lindsay was playing really well but the key was that Elena didn't throw in the towel. She stayed with Lindsay the ENTIRE match. Her forehand was on and her usual DF's were practically non-existent. The lack of pace killed Lindsay. I mean when a server's second serve is FASTER than their first serve... c'mon! Great win for Elena, even if I don't care for her. I'm happy when ANYBODY breaks through with their first tour win. :)

Hey JCAP, wat part of N. Ireland u from?!?! I'm from Belfast!! :wavey:

Oh, and I love JCAP but I prefer :hearts: Linds :hearts: so am glad she beat her!! But, I think that keft Linds a little empty for the final!!! She played a great match overall but totally agree that she's not in that 'winning mentality' that took her to those 38 other titles!!!

I mean to beat Monica so convincingly in Tokyo, granted on indoor hard, and yet to lose to Dementiva who can hardly get a 1st serve to pass the 66mph mark  says to me that it is ALL mental!!!

Am VERY happy with her standard this past few weeks though and happy that she feels confident in her game again!!! She said she feels the best she has in months at a press conference in Florida this week!! :D :bounce: :D :bounce:

Am not taking too much enthusiasm to the European clay court swing however as the red clay of Europe always seems to play so much slower than the green clay of America!! I actually think I agree with the observation that the green clay tournaments are playing faster than Indian Wells, which was incredibly and ridiculously slow!!

I'm actually still in shock. I left when Lindsay was up a set and 4-2 in the second-- by the time I got to my aunt's house I read that she lost in 3??? Unbelievable <sobs uncontrollably>

Lindsay has plenty of titles. Including Grand Slams.

Elena had none. Share the wealth ;)

its lindsay who might be bummed with herself. but as a champion she would know what to do the next time she's in the finals.

Elena played alot of balls. She waited until Lindsay started missing. She made Lindsay play, she kept getting the ball back. Which in turn made for long ralleys which in turn made Lindsay run out of gas, which in turn won Eena her first title.

Elena played Like Kim C, but better.. she played defensively and aggressively and mixed it up. Kim gets alot of balls but is rather passive imho where as Elena was not,was defense and offense.

Apr 21st, 2003, 06:32 AM
I don't think Kim plays passively at all. Perhaps more conservatively but kim hits a HEAVY ball and has good court sense.

For those who are saying that Lindsay played shite, I just totally totally disagree. Lindsay had more winners than errors for almost all of the match until maybe the very very end when she got tired. Of course, Elena actually can make Lindsay tired if Elena hits more winners than LINDSAY! the balls were hard hit, Elena used great defense too and forced Lindsay to move and move FAST. Forcing Lindsay to hit hard over and over and move fast will make her tired but most player are not able to do that because they lost first.

Lindsay should however mix up her serving more. She hits almost all first serves between 97 and 105 mph and is predictable. Dementieva's "weaker" serves have an upside in that she had a 30+ mph range in her speeds confusing Lindsay. Some of you all have totally unreal expectations about Lindsay's UE quote when a match is played on that level! It's like you expect her to never miss.

Is this supposed to be all the finals she's gotten to then subsequently lost since she came back?

Because damn you could add two Clijsters finals there plus the first one against Venus at Pen Pilot Open.

Still when you look at it she's been the most consistent player apart from the Williams sisters and Clijsters - she's gotten to at least the qtrs in every single tournament except for the WTA Championships, Aust. Open and Scottsdale in the past year.

If she had played like she did all week she would have won but she didn't and Elena who played exceptional this week jumped on those weaknesses and made her pay for it.

:fiery: what is this?! losing all 7 finals in three sets?????? grrrrrrr.....
