View Full Version : Do Capriati and Davenport hate each other?

I saw their handshake today and there wasn't an ounce of friendliness in it. Considering that they were born three months apart, are from the same country and socio-economic background, have had similar career success (both winning three grand slams and an Olympic gold medal for the US), and have been playing together on the tour for more than 10 years, why do they seem to resent each other and have such a cold relationship? This isn't the first time I've noticed this.

i wouldnt say that they hate each other.i remember that lindsay kissed jennifer when she was beaten at australian open 2001.i think it's more a jennifer thing than a lindsay one.when jenn lost to lindsay, she was very cold.maybe jenn is a bad loser... :o

Yeah, I just think it has to do with Jen not liking to lose. She was just pissed.

I wouldn't take too much out of it.

Or maybe its b/c not everyone is going to be like Venus and Serena when the sisters meet at the net. Even Chris and Martina had their regular handshakes. It depends on the mood of the player.

i agree ..! I am really impressed with Lindsay's on-court attitudes ..she always seems to be very nice to her opponents ....But Jennifer ,i haven't seen her pleased when she lost .

How can a player be pleased when she lost?
Jennifer is a little bit cool but not that bad. However, looking at the way they play against each other, I definitely say J is the true loser. Lindsay is simply better. Jennifer may still think she shouldn't lose. So, she is not pleased.

Also, I don't think they hate each other. But they are definitely not good friends. It's like Pete and Patrick. They are rivals.

Yes, Jennifer sometimes stinks on court, but most players, like Jenn, don't do the "Chorus Line" number after they lose a match... ;)

The two have a very respectful relationship toward each other. So don't make mountains out of anthill over a freakin handshake.................

They are two professional players out there competing. Why would they have to be friends? Should I be friendly to everyone at my work just because they do the same job and are around the same age as myself?

I remember on a documentary they did about the womens tour not long ago on channel 4, the week jen was becoming number 1 (zurich i think?) they talked for half a second about playing doubles...

jen's response was "well i don't really want to play doubles". So i guess they're friends enough to talk about it lol... jen just says what she feels huh...

What Venus said I think applies to how Jen feels to

Venus said at the 1998(?) Us Open when told that Davenport thinks she doesn't 'smile' enough( )
"I smile when I want to smile not when you want me to smile"

should Jen be smiling at Lindsay after she got beaten?
I think they both have their lives and one doesn't depend on the other to bring comfort at the net.
By the way, Jenn played good, she just needs to bring more agression to the court.

yeah sonic I remember that - Davenport presumed cappy would play doubles with her but cappy didn t even think about it she just said i dont wanna. - they usually seem quite friendly toward each other

that part of the documentory caused quite a stir on here with varius fans... so lets not get into that again... each player has other players they a close to..jen and iva, serena and venus, lindsay and lisa, and some dont get along..i think that if lindsay and jen were sat with each other they would talk.

I hate losing personally; and both are heavy favorites over Elena IMO, making this SF even more important. Before the match, they had nice comments about eachothers games, but again, we can't expect them to go golfing together after the match.

wasnt it that she didnt want to play doubles at the time Linzi asked her to?

i think she was just busy in singles.

Jennifer is NOT a bad loser! take a look back to the Champs vs Serena. she was having so much fun there at the net she patted Serena on the back with her racquet after a friendly exchange

ppl get pissed off sometimes when they lose....u are acting like its a big thing lol

Jennifer is like that. I remember when she beat Monica in 2000 AO, how friendly they both were to each other at the net. Then later that year, when Jennifer lost to Monica in Acura (or some other American summer hardcourt tournament), Monica came to the net expecting a friendly exchange with Jennifer, but instead got the coldest handshake from her oponnent. It is all great to be gracious when you win, but a real test of your personality is to be gracious when you lose.

No, Jennifer played with Chanda and Lindsay played with Lisa in Filderstadt 2001.

So Elena Dementieva gave Lindsay a rather abrupt and not so friendly looking handshake at the end of the match.

Does this mean Elena hates Lindsay?

Sheesh was a stupid thread this is.

Their exchange at IW was very friendly.

"drops two cents."

I agree that you can't read too much into handshakes, although often it is very telling (Cap Venus one springs to mind). I just think that Jen is rather moody, but that is no criticism of her and she hates to lose (which in the brutal game of tennis at that level is not such a bad thing).

I don't think they are that good friends though, and I really don't think they have that much in common (apart from maybe their filthy mouths :p ). Lindsay is much more down-to-earth, has never thought tennis was the be-all, and is from a very middle-class all-American family. Jen on the other hand seems to have much more fire, never finished her schooling, and is half-Italian. I dunnow I just don't think they have that much in common, but you what they say "opposites attract". Somehow I don't think so here!

At least she doesn't say something like "I can't play you" after losing to Davenport again.

I agree with the poster "tatiana panova"; Lindsay
and Jen are very, very different. Lindsay is from
an upper middle class white family. She was a
country club type kid...sort of like Tim Henman.
Jen on the other hand is more working class.
Stefano is an Italian immigrant, and they are
East Coasters.

Lindsay wasn't a child star like Jen- she had to
claw her way to the top of the tennis world.
Stefano quit his job to be Jen's manager/coach
while Lindsay's family has nothing to do with her
career. Jen probably has more things in common
with Mary Pierce than Lindsay.

I like both players, and I never got the
feeling that they were palsy-walsy. It
doesn't bother me at all.

That doubles issue was really interesting. I think it was at Filderstadt and Lindsay came in to ask Jennifer about practising together for doubles the next week in Zurich, and Jennifer said I'm not playing doubles. Lindsay said, well you are cos here is the draw sheet and there we are on it, and Jennifer said well I don't want to play doubles, and Lindsay looked a bit like 'okay, whatever' and left. And of course at Zurich THEY DID PLAY DOUBLES!!! My guess is Stefano decided she needed to play doubles and organised it!!!
