Good Luck Slovenia!! :)

Anybody know about Maja ancle injury, can she play? (There has not been any update news on her site)

Stolen from STA:

Matevžičeva bo naslednji teden (25. in 26. 4.) brez težav branila slovenske barve v dvoboju prvega krogu svetovne skupine pokala Fed z Argentinkami. "Gre za poškodbo mišice na nogi, vendar mislim, da ni nič resnega. Potrebujem nekaj dni počitka in vse bo v redu," je ob tem dejala Matevžičeva.

rough translation:

The injury of Matevžič is not bad

The injury of Slovenian tennis player MM, that she got in her last match against PS in the AI tournament, is not a bad one. 22 year old Ljubljana resident will be able to play next week.

Matevzic will have no problem with appearing for Slovenia in the first round of fed cup against Argentina. "It's an injury of a leg muscle, but I don't think it's anything serious. I just need few days of rest and everything will be fine," said Matevžič.

This is from 17. 4. so at that time (and as far as I know now) she's playing.

Historical meeting for Slovenians

A Historical meeting avaits Slovenian female tennis team on Friday and Saturday. They will be playing for the first time in the world group of the fed cup in a little city Pilar near Buenos Aires.

Argentinians are weakened because of the non-apearance of their best players. Maria Emilia Salerni is ranked 184. in the WTA ranking and Natalia Garbellotto is only 697.

Slovenian selector Mima Jauševec had hard work in determining who will play besides Katarina Srebotnik: Maja Matevžič or Tina Pisnik. She chose the later, because of her better recent form. There is still a possibility, Matevžič will play on Saturday.

Katarina Srebotnik and Tina Križan will have easier work in the doubles, too. Paola Suarez, which is not playing is the first player in the world in doubles.

Slovenians are feeling great in Argentina, they had good practice sessions, the only thing that is slightly worring them is bad weather prognosis.

The clay court in the Maylind de Pilar doesn't have a retractable roof and on Sunday there are presidental elections and matches can't be played, so it can happen that the matches will have to be played in the next week.

Apr 24th, 2003, 07:37 PM
Translated from STA:

Mima Jauševec on the selection of Tina over Maja:

"The decision was not made until last training session. Tina worked stronger, selfassured, she has better feeling, besides she's better opponent for Salerni than Maja. She beat her easily in her last match, and the other Argentinian player, which we thought will be Gussoni, is good for her. Anyway, I will probably change players for Saturday and give Matevžič a chance. The decission was not easy, it was made with team spirit and even Maja agreed that the one in better form at the moment should play. The atmosphere in the team is very positive, girls surprised me with their good spirits, will to work and the desire to win."

Katarina Srebotnik:" We came here with the best possible team, because playing for Slovenia in the world group of fed cup means a huge deal to us. Our only thoughts are on victory and I can promise in the name of the whole team, we will give our all and return home as winners."

Apr 24th, 2003, 09:33 PM

Good luck Katarina, Tina, Tina and Maja! :D

From Večer (translation):

Today the first matches of federation cup Argentina - Slovenija
The best ones didn't change their minds
Clarisa Fernandez and Paola Suarez didn't reach an agreement with the Argentinian federation and won't be playing

Today will be written in the history book of slovenian tennis with gold letters – our players are playing in the world group for the first time. Katarina Srebotnik, Tina Pisnik, Maja Matevžič and Tina Križan with the capitain Mimo Jaušovec are prepairing in Aregentina from Monday for 1/8 finals of this elite female tennis competition . Girls have been practicing in the past days on the courts (that are supposed to be quite slow) in the golf club Mayling de Pilar, that is 50 kilometers from Buenos Airesa.

Argentiniani selector Ricardo Rivero has had lots of problems. Because of a disagreement with their tennis association, their best playersi Clarisa Fernandez (27. player in the world) and Paola Suarez (29.), won't be playing. Third argentinian player Mariana Diaz Oliva was prepared to play, but she hasn't recovered from her injury and is following the practice of the Argentinian selected team on the crutches from the sides of the courts. The strongest weapon of the hosts will be former junior world champion Maria Emilia Salerni (184.), the team consists also of 21 year old Natalia Gussoni (204.) and 18 year old Natalia Garbelotto (697.).

The atmosphere in the Slovenian camp is good. Maja Matevžič has recovered from her ancle injury, so the team selector Jaušovčec had a hard task of who to choose for the second player: Pisnik or Matevžič. "I decided on Tina Pisnik. She showed more in practice," told the capitain. The place of the first player is guaranteed for Katarina Srebotnik, player from Velenje will be also playing the doubles with her doubles partner Tina Križan. Two singles matches are scheduled today: Pisnik - Salerni and Srebotnik - Garbelotto (the start of the first »duel« is at 16. hour CET), tomorrow at 15. hour will follow the other two singles and the doubles. The matches between selected row of Mima Jaušovec and Argentinians will be the only one starting today, because on Sunday Argentinians are selecting the first man of the country on the presidential elections.

"I am sure girls are capable of reaching the best 8 teams. We are not concentrating on the Argentinians, even if they would be playing with their best team – our job is to play good ourselves". If the Slovenians would win they will be competing against the winner of the meeting between Croatia and Russia on the 19. and 20. June in Portorož .

Playing tomorrow:

Mima got scared
Slovenija leads Argentina in federations cup 2:0

BUENOS AIRES – Slovenian female team leads 2:0 in the first round of fed cup competition against Argentina and needs to win only one more mach to be placed in quarterfinals. First point for Slovenia was won by 22. year old player from Maribor Tina Pisnik, who beat two years younger Maria Emilia Salerni, 184. ranked player, without greater difficulties. As expected the second win came when first Slovenian player Katarina Srebotnik beat 18 year old Natalia Garbellotto (who is only ranked 697 on the world ranking) 6:1 6:2.

Despite boycott of the best Argentinian players both Slovenians played with full strenght, without underestimating the opponents. Used frase : »In team sports anything is possible« forced the Slovenians to act like a professionals on the court. »Despite nervousness Tina's concentration fell a bit after a good start and a lead with 5:2 and I must admit, I got a bit scared at that moment. Then it was already 5:5 and it wasn't looking well. But Tina managed to rise and reach her maximum at the critical moment. Real player.

Katarina was also nervous before her match. It went away somehow after Tina's win and even in her starting strokes you could see a clear intention. Garbellotto surprised me with her game, but Katarina didn't let her into the match. Only win counts for her. You rarely mees such a determined player as Katarina Srebotnik, who surprised me again with her »real« play«, were the comments on the preformance of Tina Pisnik and Katarina Srebotnik by the team capitain Mima Jaušovec. She added that next to Katarina, Maja Matevžič will play her first match in the world group.

Slovenian tennis players in the second round Šport - saturday, 26. april 2003 (23:39)

Slovenian female tennis team has beaten Argentina 3:2 in the first round of the world group fed cup and reached next round in their first appearance in the elite group.

After Slovenija has reached a lead 2:0 after wins from Tina Pisnik and Katarina Srebotnik on friday, the decisive win was reached by Katarina Srebotnik, who won 6:3 6:7 (1) 6:1 over Maria Emilia Salerni. Srebotnik won five games in a row after being down 0:4 in the second round and lead 5:4. At this result she already had 3 balls to close the match, but Argentinian made a miracolous recowery and won the set in a tie-break. In the third set Velenje player put things back in order again and won a place in the quarterfinals in which the protegees of Mima Jauševec will compete on a home court (probably in Portorož) on 19. and 20. July with the winners of Russia/ Croatia.

"Tennis is a really cruel sport. After you already think you have won, everything turns upside down. But I proved myself in the third set and now I can enjoy a wonderful feeling and the biggest succes in my career of playing for the team. I am proud I have won 2 of the frst 3 pointsand I am glad about the atmosphere in the team. Girls on the stands cheered me on all the way and at moments were even louder than all the Argentinians. We have to focus on quarterfinals now and eventhough we are in no way favourites for a win, we have to concentrate on succes.« told our best player Katarina Srebotnik.

In the other two duels, that were more of a prestigious nature, Maja Matevžič lost against Natalia Gussoni with 4:6 and 2:6 and the doubles pair Križan/ Tina Pisnik was bettered by a team of Salerni/Gussoni with 2:6, 6:3 and 4:6.

Well done SLO!! :)

Statements after the match:

Tina Pisnik:
"I wasn't especially good in my match against Salerni, and nerves did their part, because it's quite a difference in playing for the team then when playing tournaments. I can't be satisfied with my game that was very up and down, but in the end only result counts and it is excellent for us."

Katarina Srebotnik:
"My game as well as Salerni's game were on a high level, so I can be satisfied with my performance.Tennis is a really cruel sport. We have to focus on quarterfinals now and eventhough we are in no way favourites for a win, we have to concentrate on succes."

Tina Križan:
"Katarina proved she is psychicaly very strong. Many players would let their game fall apart after losing 3 match points, but she stick to her game and brought the team the much desired third point."

Maja Matevžič:
"Unlike than Argentinian that very much wanted a first win for her team, I wasn't very motivated, because the meeting was already decided. I didn't find my real game, but the main point is, we are returning to Slovenia as winners."

Mima Jaušovec:
"I am overjoyced. Next to my win in Paris this is the happyest moment in my tennis life. This girls deserved their place among the eight best teams in the world and I am telling you, they didn't say the last word. With good team atmosphere, good form of all four players and some luck we could win the quarterfinals, too. In this week in Buenos Aires and this historycal win we silenced the critics an all those who didn't work for the good of Slovenian tennis and have brought unrest in the team with some unappropriate words. The atmosphere in the team was beyond all expectations, girls adapted to one another and they can hardly wait to come together again and play for the next time. I have to give credit to our tennis federation that did everything for the well being of the players, which they repaid with good attitude and the will to work. Before going to Argentina they were not in a good position, because everybody expected them to win, which needed to be confirmed on the court. It's always hard at team events, because you are not only playing for yourself, but for the team and for your country. The win is for me, that have always fought to get our girls to play in the elite group, biggest revard."

Andrej Jeras:
" It wasn't easy after we became favourites bacause of the problems of Argentina, but the girls did their job great, so we will be hosting Russia in Portorož on July. This duel will be the biggest promotion of Slovenian tennis in the year 2003, because all the fans of tennis will have the chance to see all the best Slovenian players playing in Slovenija. This is that much more important because of the fact that Slovenian economy is not capable of supporting a project for WTA tournament in Slovenija right now, that would be appropriate considering all our good players. With the placement in the quarterfinals Slovenian tennis federation recieved a nice sum of money from ITF, that we will, as according to contracts, forward to the players. In the end I would like to congratulate all the players and the capitain again."

Mima Jauševec tennis legend (again)

(translated from Jana magazine, published after fed cup win)

She is youthfull, full of energy and very very much in love – in tennis and in twelve year old Tim, son she was prepared to give up tennis for.

When Tim was born there was nothing that would mean more to me than him. Something I wouldn’t believe before, if somebody told me, happened: nothing else was aroung me. For me to give up tennis, no not me - never. But it happend. One year there was just Tim. That was the best moment of my life and nothing can compare to it.

- Even some new big tennis victory not?
No, not even that. Really. I only regret not having more children.

- One year after delivery again tennis?
No, Tim and tennis! I just took him with me to competitions around the world. And don’t ask me if he was a hinderance – no, he was my big encouragement.

- Is he also a tennis talent?
He is in the age when he is interested in lots of sports, he plays tennis too, but he doesn’t show any special ambitions to do it professionaly – not that. I was a talent and a worker, he does everything to a certain limit.

- But lots of times parents, with their example and ambitions influence their children!
I am not like that. I can help him, advise him – that’s all. I lived my tennis ambitions to the fullest and I don’t demand anything from my son because I haven’t done myself.

- You are somehow special because of two things: you haven’t gave up “Štajerščina” (Slovenian dialect spoken in the east part of Slovenia, around Maribor, Celje, Velenje, Ptuj) and you are not getting old.
Haha, I know how to speak correct Slovenian with the Maribor accent. If you are from Maribor, it stays with you.

- What are you doing that you don’t get old as it would be appropriate?
Not that long ago we had an aniversary of high school graduation – I don’t know which one – and we discovered it’s some kind of spirit you hold within that makes you young. I have been hanging around young people all my life, I remained active and the moment I would consider finishing my career hasn’t arrived yet. That’s it.

- How do you discover a tennis talent in a person?
You got to have a special feeling. You can’t write someone at eight years of age and claim he’s not a talent. That would be very cruel. But around twelve years it shows – he is having some special victories, but that’s not the most important; important is that he learns technique quickly, and they have to have a special hart for sports, that is hard to describe.

- Try anyway.
On the cour in the hardest moments, the champion will choose the best way of playing. They will know how to turn the hard moments into their advantage, it will be a challenge for them. The psihologycal aspect is important: the champion or unique talent never has a hard time coming to practice, for them it’s the greatest punishment if they can’t come.

- What do you say to a boy or a girl or their parents, who bring them to you and have great ambitions?
They all have great ambitions!

- Why? Because tennis is a big business, because you can get ritch because of it? Is that the main motive?
Sadly there is more and more of that. Some time ago we made a poll between yoouth from 5 to 8 years and we asked them, why do you play tennis? ľ of the children answered, that tennis provides for good life and you can make lots of money.

- But that’s true about tennis!
When I started to get involved in this sport it wasnt like that and even ten years ago tennis was just a sport, a beautiful sport, but today it’s a sort of profession parents want to direct their children to to earn a lot of money. Everything is not so simple! That children that are dragged here by their ambitious parents, and they are crying – they fall of pretty quickly. You can’t force them.

- How can you influence this kind of parents?
I talk to them, I try to explain what this kind of forcing can mean. But I also tell to the parents of the very gifted children that their kids will have to give up lots of things, dedicate everything to tennis – even school.

- If we made a comparison between tennis when you started and today: Is it true that in your time the game was more of an Waltz and today it reminds of heavy metal music?
Interesting comparison, I’ve never heard it before, but it’s true in a way. Tehnical aspect hasn’t changed a lot, what changed are speed and power of the game. In my time we were more like “ballerinas” and this days tennis players work out much more, all muscles.

- Even female players?

- Are you addicted to tennis?
Yes I am. Still, when I go to Roland Garros every year, I get shivers down my spine.

- Could you still achieve good results if you played today?
Judging by Navratilova, who was my generation, something could still be done. However it is true, I can’t imagine myself training 5 hours a day every day now.

- Was the decision to end active tennis career hard? You left while still on top of your game, many players don’t.
I think it’s not that hard to give up tennis. This is a sport that lasts 12 months a year, no breaks, and there comes a moment when you don’t wish to constantly travel and compete anymore. I finished gradually, not over night.

- You went seperate ways with the tennis federation once, but now you accepted the leadership of Slovenian tennis team in the federations competition – fed cup. In the first apperance in the world group our girls beat Argentinians and placed themselves into 8 best teams in the world!
That was a nice challenge for me! Girls came together, eventhough there were lots of rumours that they are crossed with eachother, that they don’t even say hello to eachother and that there is no chance for them to achieve anything. I didn’t believe that and I was right. I was always convinced they belong in the world’s top and that was confirmed in Argentina. I am simply thrilled about these girls!

-When you won Roland Garros, French open 1977 you didn’t become everything you would if you won today: ovations, crowd on Brnik (Ljubljana’s airport; well Slovenia’s only international airport ;)), receptions with the president of state, government, ...
Tennis was at that time not the sport that would be at the top of the list of sports in Slovenia and Yugoslavia at that time. A little was everything inhibited by the system, because tennis was the first sport here that was publically charactarised as professional. That was not wery appropriate at that time.

- Today you would earn a lot more with such a victory.
Today the earn in the first round as much as I did for winning. Times have changed and it doesn’t bother me.

- Yes, but they are still talking: Mima didn’t manage to break that magical sum of one million dollars!
(laugh) Oh, I really regret that!

- You said they you will leave tennis when one million falls!
True, but it didn’t came and luckily I could continue for a while.

- How much do they earn today for such results as yours today?
Lots of millions!

- Why does this sport bring such enormous earnings?
It is interesting to people, companies, advertisers, It is sport of the masses, connections and acquaintances are made and strenghtened by tennis. If you want to be something you have to appear on the tribune of a big competition.

- So it’s an elite sport?
In this way, yes.

- Are professional tennis players really the most lonely people on earth?
What concernes giving up things and isolation from regular life it’s true. It’s also an individual sport in the hardest moments you are completely alone, with all your doubts, sadness, joy. I myself have traveled mostly alone, I was in a way secluded and if I had to do it all again, I wouldn’t do it.

- From this aspect is quite a cruel sport!
Yes. I remember some of my victories that I couldn’t share with anyone, because I was alone in my hotel room. For women it’s even harder. Male players find themselves an interesting companion, models like to circulate around them. Female players find it hard, they don’t want a short term companion.

- Why are Slovenina girls better than the boys?
They know exactly what they want, especially this generation. We had some boys, big talents, but they faded because they were not prepared to give up the temptations of life. To concentrate 100% on tennis. Because it’s very hard.

- What remains when you finish professional career?
That’s a big problem! It can be dangerous. If you haven’t earned enough, if you don’t have other education it can be quite tragical. That doen’t only go for tennis but for all top sports and they should put more consideration in it.

- Many don’t even finish an appropriate school!
True, but today it’s perhaps a bit easier! Tina Pisnik for example is making her schooling with the help of a computer and it’s going nicely – she studies and makes exams.

- What is your character?
I can be very controlled (laugh). But I am always optimistical and in a good mood.
- Tennis, tennis, tennis and tennis – what else in life?
Tennis and Tim.

- Do you have other ways of enjoying?
I enjoy in both. In the summer I like to go sailing with good company.

- And how in the future?
(laugh) Tim and tennis.

Looks like all the Slovenians are on the team for the matches in Portorož :D :

Team boss Mima Jaušovec for Večer:

"From qurterfinal meeting in the federation cup with Russians there are less than 3 weeks. The preparations for this event are in full flow in Portorož and I am following the preformance of Slovenian players in Wimbledon. Girls showed lot of fighting spirit but the results on grass are not the real indicator of preparation for clay courts. Maja Matevžič will rest for a week after Wimbledon, the other members of the team will play on clay courts in Palermo. This will be followed by group preparations in Portorož. The Russians are starting with preparations already next week in Umag (Croatia) and they are coming with a very strong team that includes all their best players except Petrova.

From the todays edition of "Večer" (my translation):

Russians favourites on paper

Among crowds of tourists, wanting to get refreshed in the sea, roads towards Portorož will be full of tennis enthusiasts this week. On the clay court of ŠRC Marina there will be an exhibition of top female tennis; at assurance of the organisers, they provided organised transport for members of different tennis cloubs from whole country towards the coast, the quarterfinal meeting of fed cup wont have a free seet in the house. Our team will consist of Katarina Srebotnik, Tina Pisnik, Maja Matevžič and Tina Križan (more about their expectations in the next days), Russia is comming in full force, with players ranked to the 21. place in the world ranking of WTA (Vera Zvonareva, Anastazija Miškina, Elena Dementijeva, Jelena Bovina).

"In front of us there is a big event, matches at the world level. We put in extreme efforts to provide appropriate organisation. We expect full stadium in Portorož and good play from our team. Of course I wish for success, a win from Slovenians, but I'm not burdened by that. I don't doubt the girls will play to the best of their abilities", stressed president of tennis asociation of Slovenia Andrej Polenec yesterday at the press conference.

The head of the fed cup team Mima Jaušovec has driven to Portorož after hanging out with the press where the players had their first training two days ago. She has already recieved first prize before the start of the duel with Russian selected team. On the preposal of government of Slovenian Republic she has been chosen by the European ? for an ambasador of sport, tolerance and fair play. Until now the only recipients amongst Slovenians were legendary gymnast Miro Cerar and Stanislav Pintar from the faculty of sports. Jauševec will be preforming her honorary role until the year 2007.

"There is more and more violence at sports, even in tennis. After last incidents the security measures were increased; my intention is promotion of good sport behaviour and I want the audience to behave like that at the matches against Russia«, said Mima Jaušovec. She added:« Of course we are interested only in Russians now. On paper they are clear favourites, but I'm not hiding my optimism, because the opponents are better at fast courts. We will be in full force for the first time, It's hard to decide who to put in play. I believe will will show what we can do with the help of the audience.«

The Russians took their preparations seriously. Bovina and Miškina are acclimating to medditerrainian climate from sunday (they have been practicing in Umag) and have moved yesterday to the Slovenian side of the coast, Zvonareva arrived yesterday and Dementieva announced her arrival for today. The capitain Tarapišev has even tougher tas in selecting players for the matches as his Slovenian colleague; the final decision will be announced at the fridays drawing at the Grand hotel Metropol in Portorožem. Saturdays schedule begins at 16. and Sundays at 15. hour.

Katarina Srebotnik pre - fed cup interview from Večer (translation):

Katarina Srebotnik taking the burden of the first player of Slovenian tennis team
Bigger pressure, Bigger challenge
The rumours about bad relations in the team are false claims Katarina

Mima Jaušovec will announce the decision about the second singles player only one hour before today's draw (she is considering Tina Pisnik and Maja Matevžič ), but there is no doubt who the »first lady« will be. The forme, confirmed with the placement in the Palermo final and 35 place on the world rankings are putting Katarina in the role of the first player of the Slovenian tennis team before tomorrow's start of quarterfinal duel for the fed cup against Russia in Portorož. Player from Velenje will probably get the chance in doubles, too. The team of Katarina and Tina Križan is well played and experianced.

- Katarina, when did you last play at home? Do you feel an extra pressure in the role of the first player?

"I don't remember when I played last at the home terrain. Maybe at some junior tournament. It will be nice to stepp infront of the home crowd, the audience will see us all together for the first time. I am really looking forward to this matches, playing before our people brings out special feelings. The pressure is rising, but after Palermo I can face an extra burden. More pressure means more challenge to me. My current form is excellent, I hope it lasts."

- You lost the final in Palermo against a Russian. Can defeat against Dinari Safini destroys self esteem in the matches against her compatriots?
»No, not at all, quite the opposite. Palermo gave me exta strenghts. The fact that Safina is not even playing in Portorož is a proof of how strong Russian team is. The quality of players is their biggest advantage, but it's good for us too, because we have nothing to lose. When we arrived in Argentina the locals were already talking about the win of their home team. We ignored that and showed on the court what we can do. I hope we can be successful at home against Russians, too.«

Russian advantage is in a big selection of good players. What is ours?
In believing in ourselves and in the chance to play infrontont of home fans. I know what home advantage means. Especially in Russia. Balls that landed even up to 20 cm outside lines were judged in the favour of the opponents. This won't happen in Portorož, we can concentrate only on our own play and not think about outside influences.«

- Russians are rtanked between 10. and 21. place, you are 35. on the WTA ranking. What are the differences that separate the players on this level? For example you and Zvonareva?
"She is better according to points, but the difference is not that big. I would say I'm more versatile, because I can play at the net, too and Zvonareva is better at the baseline as are all Russian players.«

- Who are you expecting on the opposite side on Sataurday and Sunday?
"It doesn't effect my preperation. I believe Dementieva nad Myskina have advantage in singles, but we must not forget Zvonareva and Bovina, so it's hard to know who will the Russian leaders select. It's important thet we know their style of the game, and even more important to know what we Slovenians can do.«

- One more thing in the end. What is the atmosphere in Slovenian team. A Lot was said about the unhealthy competivness between Slovenian players?
"If the competition increases it's only good for Slovenian tennis, because it forces us to train harder. The gossip about bad relations don't bother me, because I know they aren't true, and I know where they come from. We players never had any problems with eachother, this stories were more personal opinions of some individuals in the media that have done this because the interests of the writing.«

Maja has a tough job ahead of her, but if anyone has the mental toughness to win this one she does.
Let's hope the crowd lifts her to play her very best tennis.

Maja think she can win against Myskina, thats our girl ;)
The draw for the Fed Cup World Group quarterfinal between Slovenia and Russia was held earlier today. The line-up is as follows:

Maja Matevzic (SLO) v Anastasia Myskina (RUS)
Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) v Anastasia Myskina (RUS)
Maja Matevzic (SLO) v Elena Dementieva (RUS)
Tina Krizan/Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) v Elena Bovina/Vera Zvonareva (RUS)

The Slovenian coastal resort of Portoroz on the north Adriatic sea is the venue for this tie. The home team has reached the quaterfinals in its debut year in the elite in the Fed Cup World Group while on the other side of the net, Russia is a four-time finalist and by far the more exierienced Fed Cup nation of the two. The team of Anastasya Myskina, Vera Zvonareva, Elena Dementieva and Elena Bovina is considered the favourite over the Slovenian team of Katarina Srebotnik, Maja Matevzic, Tina Pisnik and Tina Krizan. But stranger things have happened in team events like the Fed Cup.

This quaterfinal tie is without a doubt one of the sporting highligts in Slovenia this summer. The 10-year dream of joining the elite World Group came true for the Slovenian Fed Cup team this season and a first round win over Argentina brought about the quaterfinal place, which is of historical significance for Slovenian tennis.

"We have been waiting for this ever since Slovenian independence in 1991. We came very close several times, but we always failed just a couple of steps away from the top,'' said team captain Mima Jausovec, the Slovenian tennis legend who is the only player from that country to win a singles Grand Slam title. "Last year we finally took the opportunity in the qualifying round tie against Ukraine. We could easily compare this achievement with the success of our football team which played at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea last year. Beating Argentina in the opening round and advancing to the quaterfinal is fantastic.”

But this historical acheivement is still far behind the achievements of the Russians in their tennis development. Russia is becoming a huge threat to traditional tennis nations and is rapidly transforming into a tennis superpower. Their success at this year's Wimbledon, where five Russians played in the round of 16 on the English grass, is just one example.

On paper, the Russians are clear favorites this weekend. Myskina, Zvonareva, Dementieva and Bovina are currently ranked between 10 and 21 on WTA rankings, higher than all of the Slovenians, their best player being Srebotnik at No. 35. But Slovenian players are aware of the fact that rankings don't mean much in team events like the Fed Cup. Team spirit accompanied by the support of the home crowd might help them against their stronger opponent. With no WTA tournaments in Slovenia this quaterfinal tie will be the first opportunity for the home crowd to see their heroes and it is no surprise that the stadium in Portoroz is almost sold out for both days.

"We are aware that the Russians are clear favorites. But at the same time we think we also have some good chances. On the slow clay surface and with a little help from the supporting crowd anything could happen,” Jausovec said.

After the draw, which was held in the Metropol hotel, all the cards were on the table. While the Slovenian captian chose her team according their positions on the current WTA rankings, Russian captain Shamil Tarpischev was more surprising. Despite Zvonereva's superior ranking he nominated Dementieva as Russia's second singles player behind Myskina. "Anastasia and Elena are our most experineced players, while Vera is new in the team,” explained Tarpischev.

Matevzic and Myskina will open the tie at 16:00 CET on Saturday. The second match will be the clash between Srebotnik and Dementieva. “We have already played several times, most recently in Rome this year. Even though I lost that match I think I have a good chance to win the first point for Slovenia,” Matevzic said. Myskina was a bit more diplomatic, saying: “Maja is a good player. But this is Fed Cup. You never know.”

Maja's statement after thematch: "I am disapointed because I didn't force my game to Myskina, but that is always hard with such a good opponent. She didn't play well at the beginning, but then she woke up."
