Who is the most tennis player Ever? I mean, you could like walk up to someone that knows nothing about Tennis or the players, but you mention so and so tennis player and they actualy know them.

Also, who is the most famous number 1 ever? Im talking about Females, but after that, male or female who is the most famous?

Right now, id go with Serena. Not b/c she is my fave. But she has done so many commericals, so many mag covers, so many interviews. Not only most famous number 1 male or female, but ever. She has a lot on her shoulders. I think back in the day, a lot of the number 1's kept a low key, but Serena just loves it, she is enjoying all the press and stuff. I think Venus is right behind her, followed by Agassi, but Venus is starting to fade, Serena is starting to really leave her in the dust.

Who do you think?

Including men, it has to be John Mcenroe...his fame, love him or hate him, went way beyond the rold of tennis or indeed the world of sport.

i don't care how many clothing deals, commercials, slams anyone has...fame means you're a household name. and in that department? nobody beats...

Let's just agree that it's
For the men: John McEnroe
For the women: Anna Kournikova :hearts:

I would say Agassi would be just as well known as McEnroe.

I don't think so. Mcenroe has more name recognition than agassi.

Kournikova by a mile on the women's side.

McEnroe is good for the men..

For the women...Anna first then Navvy...if you ask someone to name a famous tennis player Navvy might not be the first player they'll say, but it'll be the person most people can think of (for women)

OK maybe, but in the UK, Agassi is at least equal. During Wimbledon he is always in the tabloid papers, especially when he was younger. When Barbra Streisand went to his matches it was on the news, and when he said he shaved his chest it was all over the front pages!

maybe Raquel, but do you really think more Britons could name Agassi than Mcenroe? As i recall, John was just a tiny little bit of a tabloid darling himself, you know. ;)

Rtael, you're right. navratilova would be second, I'm sure.

Pete Sampras for the men
(John MacEnwho?)
Anna Kournikova/Venus Williams

Venus is more recognized than Serena is I think, simply because we saw more of V

and I didnt know who MacEnroe was untill he commentated Wimbledon

but i've known who Pete Sampras was long before i had any interest in tennis

If I was to ask my friends to name me some tennis players (women) they would likely name me Kournikova and "the Williams Sisters" (if they were feeling bright that day, they might actually consider giving then separate identities).

But if you aren't just polling 20 year olds in university, then McEnroe does take the cake overall... at least on this continent ;)

I'm actually surprised to find out how many peoploe know who Boris Becker is... must be thanks to his scummy tabloid reports I guess.

Before I watched myself I only knew Steffi Graf. But of course more recent players are going to be known than those who are retired imo.....

LOL Venus being more known than Serena..

That's the past my buddy! Now Serena is by a milestone more known than Venus! Simply cause, Serena appears in Commercials, won the four Grand Slams, and did the swimsuit picss that are going all around the world. Venus used to be known here in Brazil, but in 2002, Serena started to take her elder's sister status, and now is more known..

BTW Anna Kournikova, Serena, Venus and HINGIS are known here..

The difference is that

Anna is known as the easy hot girl from Tennis and Venus, Serena and Martina are known as great talented tennis players :o

I'm with Becca on this one. Depending on the age group you ask you might get different answers. However, if we were to poll the planet today and just count up the names, I would guess that the most recognizable name in tennis is among the current players. That's because the media is currently spread over more parts of the world than ever before. There are TV's every where, radios and now the Internet. It's the current players names that dominate these media so more people will recognize them.

Also, you'll have older people who recognize older players (McEnroe) and younger players (the Williams Sisters), but most younger people IMO will probably only recognize current players. This is yet another reason why current players names are recognized by more people.

If we're talking about *ever*, not who is famous at the moment...and restricting ourselves to women, it might be Navratilova.

If we mean who is most famous at the moment, then Anna Kournikova...followed by that well-known player Williams Sisters.

Among the men, McEnroe and Connors.

If we mean *at the moment* McEnroe, Agassi, and Sampras.

Am I the first person to say ARTHUR ASHE??? Geez! McEnroe might know how to scream louder, but history always remembers grace over vulgarity...especially in sports.

Thats also why Anna K. will also be totally forgotten about as soon as she gets fat, old, and ugly, which she always seems on her merry way to.

Nice to see you alls opinions, but let me say something about Anna K, here in USA, she definetly has fallen in the "knowing category" what is funnie and to give an example is, the show Street Smarts, funnie game where they ask them questions, and get answers, and these are people off the street. They showed a picture of anna to this guy and asked "who is this famous person" and he looked at it, he said "can i get a clue" the man said, well in the picture you can tell she plays tennis, he says, well it ain't a williams b/c they black, so he says, is that Chris Evert? It was so hilarious, funnie he knew Chris Evert, but had no clue about Anna K, i just thought for sure he would hit that 1 right on the nail. But anna really isn't as well known in the US as she used to be, she b/c the 2 dolla hoe figure over here, and that just really dropped her popularity, b/c that is not the interest here. Serena i think is better known than Venus now. They talk about how powerful, big and strong she is, but the natual beauty she posses. Im talkin about in Chi-town. Serena really has the body of a "sistah". They like that about her as well, and Venus, they keep saying how she will never beat Serena again, unless she wakes up and thinks its one of those white gurls on the other side of the net...lol

But all together, righ now id have to say Johnny Mac is best known all togehter, but say asking someone off the streets, or who knows crap about tennis, i think they will know serena or venus before anyone else, they have reached out past the tennis lilfe over the past couple yrs!

Even Martina N. would admit that in her prime Chris E. was more famous and more popular.

I would add that Billie Jean King (thanks to both her tennis leadership and a certain Mr. Bobby Riggs) was more famous than both Chris and Martina even after retirement.

I think everyone who has heard of Martina N. has also heard of Anna K. and Venus W.

There are unfortunately younger people who have heard of Venus W. and Anna K. but not Martina N. (or Martina H. for that matter).

That said, there are people who know who Anna K. is who couldn't name another tennis player period (of course many of those people might not be aware that Anna K. is a tennis player)

Because of the modern media no one in the past in tennis is likely to have been more famous that a current tennis celeb.

Note the word celeb not player, because Johnny Mac is still the biggest male tennis celeb in the game.

Anna K. is the biggest female tennis celeb in the game.

Venus W. is the the most famous #1 ever (sorry Serena but non-tennis fans still call both sisters Venus). I'm not saying she deserves to be the most famous, just that anyone who remembers Chris E. or Martina N. knows who Venus is too.

but Serena is rising up the charts.

Becool, if you get polling in Indonesia, who's the most popular, Vee or Rena? I bet they'll say (yeh... maybe 70% of them) Venus! No kidding man!

ATP Player : Andre Agassi!

Classy behavior is actually not more memorable to your average bystander than McEnroe's classic blowups... whether we like it or not, regardless of whether that is right or wrong... people are more likely to remember that which is more surprising.

that's weird cause i expect anna to be most popular in US. i guess we all know that even though anna is under the radar at the moment, even a tiny form of achievement from her can bring up a lot of attention. imagine how the media would react if anna finally wins a title. she'd be all over the sports news and people would hype her up like never before.

by the way, venus is more popular especially in my country in my opinion. one time we were watching serena and someone said "oh that's venus' sister." plus all the comments about venus being "hotter and better looking".

In my country in the women's tennis excluding the Japanese players M. Hingis is the best known with A Kournikova just behind, I think.
A lot of people know the Williams Sisters but most of them are unable to tell them apart.
