Score doesn't matter, players don't matter, year doesn't matter.
Just name the most amazing tennis you've ever seen in a whole match!

Venus Williams def. Monica Seles 6-2 6-3 @ 2001 Acura Classic Final.

Just amazing stuff from Venus.

Justine V. Lindsay AO 2003...I guess this wasn't one of the best matches ever, but I haven't been a fan of tennis for very long so I have only seen a very few matches!

Apr 18th, 2003, 09:16 PM
I would have to say Jana Novotna - Steffi Graf, Wimbledon final 1993.

Until she choked in the third set, Novotna had the best performance I have ever seen, she was just amazing, doing everything perfect.

The serve, not many aces, just great placement and bouncing very high, so forcing Steffi to return high ball that Novotna could easily catch at the net.

Her volleys were just incredible, not only the touch but also she was guessing every passing shot, every lob, she was moving all across the net to reach the ball.

And the slice backhand approach shots?, deep, with the ball barely bouncing.

Very few times I've seen Steffi with no answers, and it wasn't that Steffi was off or anything, Novotna just had one of those days. Unfortunately she messed up in the third with one of her usual chokes

The wrong player won, but the match was great.

Yeah, the Venus/Hingis semis in the U.S. Open were great.

I completely agree though with SerenaSlam, I thought the Serena/Seles semi in the Canadian Open two years ago was one of the best quality matches I have ever seen.

Apr 18th, 2003, 10:11 PM
I have to say...

Jenny Def Martina AO 2002
Serena Def Jenny RG 2002

Apr 19th, 2003, 12:25 AM
Serena d. Seles 7-5 7-6

That's the one that springs to mind of recent times to me also.

Apr 19th, 2003, 12:50 AM
Magui Serna's semi-final win over Elena Likhovtseva at Eastbourne (2001).

Apr 19th, 2003, 02:54 AM
LOL Simon!

Davenport destroying Hingis in the AO 2000 final was pretty amazing. Lindsay played a perfect match, especially for the first 13 games. The world #1 had no answers.

Also, the great battle between Serena and Lindsay in the USO 2001 quarters had me standing on my feet and screaming after every point. So much power and drama.

Steffi d. Venus Wimby 1999 (another Wimbledon classic)
Venus d. Martina USO 2000 (such long, fun rallies and determined play)
Justine d. Jennifer Wimby 2001 (JH was magical for the last two sets and I've never seen her play better)

Apr 19th, 2003, 03:08 AM
Definitely Venus and Martina at the Us Open 2000!!

This match was perfect, and those last sets rallies were just unbelievable..Especially the one were venus hit a backhand passing shot after a smash by Hingis at 15-30 3-5!!! classical!!

Apr 19th, 2003, 08:36 AM
Magui Serna's semi-final win over Elena Likhovtseva at Eastbourne (2001).

No one mentioned Lindsay def. Jenny 6-4 4-6 6-4 at IW this year? although i've only seen the highlights of that match i must say that the match was really high quality....

Hmm, everyone seems to like this one, maybe I should order it... lol

Apr 19th, 2003, 12:53 PM
yea Glenn that was an amazing match

but most Venus-Martina matches were amazing

Serena plays so many good matches its hard to say....but the most recent match i loved was Serena vs Jen at the champs....the energy between them two is now (due to Martina retiring so no more Venus matches) unrivaled

Apr 19th, 2003, 01:04 PM
Hanruchova vs Conchita(fed cup final 02)

Apr 19th, 2003, 01:55 PM
The greatest individual performance was Pierce against Graf in RG'94 SF. Mary seemed from another planet that day.

Greatest match from both players...Graf/Seles in RG'92 and Chase'98, and Graf/Sabatini in US'95.

Apr 19th, 2003, 03:47 PM
i am embarrassed to say that i never saw one venus/hingis or venus/capriati match...every time my vcr "mysteriously" didnt record it, well anyways if its such a classic shouldnt they show it on ESPN classic???

Boy, you are missing out on a lot.

I agree, that Venus vs. Martina Semi in 2000 was one of the best.

I remember getting so pissed at Venus when she went a break down, and I was applauding when she hit that Martina smash for a winner, especially if she missed it, it would give Martina two match points.

Venus def. Hingis US Open 2000

Venus def. Hingis Munich 1999 (Grand Slam Cup)
Serena def. Kim AUS Open 2003

So many :D

Apr 19th, 2003, 06:43 PM
Hingis def.Seles at the 2000 Chase Championships.

The reason is that it was two great players, both playing great tennis. They both made twice as many winners as EUs.

That's rare, especially in a big final with a lot at stake.

Apr 19th, 2003, 09:47 PM
Hingis def. Serena Aussie Open 2001 6-2 3-6 8-6 (What can I say, the perfect match. This was like the "Hingis fans version" of the 2000 US Open loss to Venus. Revenge, I guess.)

Hingis def. Seles Aussie Open 2002 4-6 6-1 6-4 (Hingis had 3 times as many winners as errors!)

Capriati def. Seles 2002 Miami semis 4-6 6-3 7-6 (2 match points down, the best modern "power match" IMO.

Here's a new one...Capriati def. Hingis 6-0 4-6 6-4 FCC 2001. (Hingis lost the first set so quickly, Cappy played the best set IMO of her entire career, Hingis rebounded to win the second in a long, tense battle and after nearly being blown away in the third, fought back to push Capriati to the limit.)

Apr 19th, 2003, 09:52 PM
Actually, you that FCC final is a pretty good match.

Capriati played an amazing first set, to bagel Hingis.

Hingis rebounded and got up 2 breaks to lead 3-0 in the second [both breaks Hingis broke at love  ].

Jen wins 4 in a row...Hingis wins three in a row. Wacky set.

Third Set, Jen rebounds once again...and leads 6-0 4-6 5-1...but Hingis comes back, but it's not enough.

And what made this even more special...this was the first event Jen played after losing to Venus in Miami, where she had the 9 match points

Apr 19th, 2003, 10:42 PM
Greatest match from both players...Graf/Seles in RG'92 and Chase'98, and Graf/Sabatini in US'95.

Graf/Sabatini 1995 was a great match, Gaby played so well after so long. I remember thinking after that she was back in a big way. Little did I realise that a shock defeat to Zvereva at Chase and two big losses to Chanda Rubin in 1996 along with her stomach injury were all that was left  .

Apr 20th, 2003, 12:02 AM
Serena def. Hingis in US Open 2000 semis was pretty amazing. Serena had 100% first serves in and totally overpowered Hingis in the second set. Poor Martina...

Apr 26th, 2003, 09:46 PM
I ordered that Pierce - Graf match! :D
I'm just so curious...

This was superb tennis by BOTH players.

Apr 26th, 2003, 09:59 PM
I don't know. for sure not the 66 ue match and I had said that too if steffi had won. I mean wimbledon 91,95 and french 96, 99 where not the highest quality matches either. a well competed match doesn't mean the tennislevel is high

Apr 27th, 2003, 12:06 AM

Steffi Graf vs Monica Seles Australian Open final 1993.

God, to think it was now over 10 years ago!

Seles was the all-conquering 19 year-old, looking like she'd grown a few inches in just the Christmas period. Her intensity was simply unbreakable.

Graf looked the perfect athlete that she was. An embodiment of strength, power, agility, endurance, resourcefulness and, on that day, defiance. She wanted her titles back. It was her New Year's resolution.

From the first point, both pounded the living daylights out of each other. Graf went deep into Seles' backhand corner from her inside out forehand. In return, Seles time and time again smote blistering double-fisted forehands into the open space in Graf's forehand corner.

Graf's slice worked well. Seles replied with angles. At one point a rally lasted almost an entire minute, Seles angling the ball to Graf's backhand, Graf stubbornly refusing to hit down-the-line. Out of the blue Seles hit a disguised missile of a shot down the line and the point was over.

Many a time Seles seemed like she was being outmanoeuvred by a superior athlete. Yet each time she replied with lazer shots, aces, volleys, drop shots.

Throughout the duration of the match, both champions never lost their adrenaline. The furious pace of the shots never stopped. Graf's silent lungs being compensated by the unmistakable walloping thump of her loosely strung forehand. The sound of Seles' racket was inaudible, her lungs exhalting like a wounded animal.

As the match moved into a third set, Graf, as in so many of their previous matches, began to look tentative. While she still resolved to go for her shots, some were now missing - and Seles was steaming ahead. Like a tigress ready to pounce on her prey, the return winners came almost at will, at one point a bullet-like return forcing Graf to mishit her forehand. Seles could smell victory.

From 2-2 in the third set, it was mainly Seles. Graf had chances to break, but Seles replied with thunderous aces down the middle of the court. Graf still managed moments of glory with backhand volleys and superb athleticism, but there was only one winner. A winner who was by now hitting the lines at will.

At 2-5, matchpoint down, Graf stood to serve a second serve with a monstrous vision facing her. Seles was jigging about with that notorious fixed jaw and possessed eyes. She was standing probably 2 feet inside the baseline.

The serve was hit tentatively in - and put decisively away as an inside-out backhand winner.

Graf was gracious in defeat, saying Seles had been the better player and deserved to win. For once, Seles accepted the compliment with no modest reply. She had never for one moment looked surprised at her triumph.

I only hope that she enjoyed the moment to the full. Things can change so suddenly. :)

The one that sticks out to me was a semi-final match not too long ago, I believe it was last summer during the hardcourt season.

Jelena Dokic df. Anna Kournikova after saving match points. They both played so well, I thought Anna was really back.

Apr 27th, 2003, 04:02 AM
My fav matches were high suspense matches -

Cappy Def. Hingis 2002 AUS Open Final -

I was going for Hingis so much, I was so nervous during the whole thing, and in the end i felt so bad for hingis.

Dokic Def. Martinez 3-6 7-6 6-2 (RG 2nd 2002)

This was such a suspense filled match, especially the tiebreaker. Jelena showed her true fighting spirit in this match and then when she just managed to take the second set, she walked away with the third. I was so happy after that!
