I'm not surprised. If anyone has been playing farther under their talent this year than Elena, it's Daniela. And since Elena won their last meeting at the Paris Indoor, she had confidence going into this match.

And though she hasn't been winning much, Elena is at least showing that there is some THERE there, losing in fights to Myskina at Sarasota and Dokic in Charleston.

I still don't see Elena as anything more than a solid #8-10 player at her best...but solid #8-10 players have fucked up a lot of tournaments for a lot of top players. Some even win them. It will be interesting to see if her form continues. Remember, last time she beat Daniela, she lost her next match 0 and 0.

Atta girl!! :D

Apparently Dani had a shoulder injury (I doubt it was major otherwise she wouldn't have played IMO) but she still had a high 1st serve %, its just that she made a lot of UE's.

After Alex took Dani to a third set, I knew Elena would win. Elena is a class above Alex in terms of movement, so she can easily retrieve Daniela's shots, plus she actually moves better than Daniela herself.

Elena just out-winnered and outplayed her!

Good luck against Justine....oh and go Jen! :)

Shocking score -- but this match really underlines what many have been murmuring for weeks, that Daniela is a shadow of her former self as a player. She played a VERY sloppy match, and it makes me wonder if something is going on in her personal life that is distracting her out there...

Hats off to Elena, who did not falter at the end but closed it out in fine style! Somehow she has gotten her confidence and her game back. I'm really happy for her and for her loyal fans who never faltered in their support! (unlike me, who pretty much gave up on her a year ago! )

I don't think so. It could be underlinining what I've been telling you even the next day after her last year IW win - that that was a fluke, helped by an easy draw, and that she is a player which, even at her best form of past year, probably has nothing to do with Top 10, leave alone Top 5.

We need to introduce Dani to beef....like make her take a month off of tennis and just lock her in a really huge barn with nothing but beef products and make her eat it all! (I supposed you could throw in some bacon and bread for variety....)

Right now, Daniela isn't even playing like top 20, probably even top 30. She's in a massive Dokic-like slump and there's no end in sight at the moment.

But saying that her best form of the past year isn't even top 10 material, that's just stupid. Yeah, it's not top 5, but her results were clearly those of a top 10 player and that's why she got there.

I fear that Dani will turn out exactly like Elena did, having a great year and then hitting a massive plateau. Elena finally seems to be getting her head together, but I don't want to have to wait that long for Daniela to start producing good results again.

Alyona is really playing better and better against Dani(probably beacause of the defeat in Zurich).

Yes, I remember you saying so. But in the intervening months Daniela had solid, if not spectacular, performances at the Slams. It is this season where her big fade has really taken form.

I feel bad for her. But others have come through this year-of-heightened expectations thing, and I hope she can too. I do think she is a better player than you believe, ys, but I also see her as one of the multitude who float around in the #8-20 range -- not unlike Elena D herself.

Sadly, right now, your prediction of a decline is right on target. :(

Sophomore slump?? Who knows?? I'm not looking for excuses here but can anyone confirm what Pam Shriver allegedly said on ESPN. By all accounts she said she spoke with Daniela before the game and she said that she was suffering with a shoulder injury. I just wonder why, if that was the case, did she play? What's the point in further aggrevating an injury? Maybe Nigel forced her to play??!! Who knows?

You see , playing injured is a valid excuse for losing like that. But it is not excuse for failing your career because of that. Remember, both - Kournikova's and Dementieva's slumps started rigth after they played injured. Dokic's slump also started after she overplayed last year, playing with injuries in many tournaments. If Dani lost like that playing injured, I would say, that that's even worse than if she'd lose like that playing fit. Because that means that at this point of her career she has no idea of what she is doing, what and how she wants to achieve in the sport..

Dementieva's idea of a perfect opponent is one who hits hard (but not-too-hard), flat shots from the baseline, but not painting the lines.

Elena will definitely have to up the ante on her serve tomorrow to have a chance...

She will have to be very aggressive in the rallies...

I dont understand why she wont do something to fix her serve...I mean she had serves in the 60's today and yet she managed to win 0&1...goes to show how bad Dani was off the ground

Daniela has been playing off-form for six months or more now. She's got too thin, and seems to have lost her enthusiasm. She's definately a top-tenner, talentwise, but needs to remotivate herself.

Its a great win for Elena D though. Hopefully a sign of return to top form for her.

I haven't followed Dani much, but she seems to be inconsistent. This also seems true for Shaughnessy.

So did Daniela have an injured shoulder or not? Did anyone see the game on TV? Did she look injured? Or was that an excuse?

Daniela played terribly. She missed a lot of easy ground strokes, even on the backhand side. Maybe she was injured but she wasn't constantly paying attention to it or anything. I almost wish she was injured so it could explain her form.

Interestingly, though, Daniela is top 10 in points THIS year. And she hasn't played more tournaments than the people above her. Maybe that's why she isn't switching coaches or anything. She has a very realistic shot at making the year end championships, even with the current terrible form.

I'm happy to see Elena playing so well...but what's going on with Dani? She's been playing terrible all year. Even though she made the QF's at the Aussie, she struggled to get their. I'm really getting worried about Dani.

Yeah, I realize that the top five play less than Dani but I think they're clearly above the rest of the field and I was more referring to the people right above Daniela such as Sugiyama, Shaughnessy, and Coetzer. The rest of the elite players right now are struggling with either injuries (Seles, Mauresmo) or inconsistency (Capriati, Dokic, Myskina).

All I'm saying is that a top eight spot at the end of the year is not entirely out of the question for Daniela.

I'm asking myself whether she is still motivated to play tennis???

It's the same with Dokic, losing matches from much lower ranked players, I don't understand what's happening this season with a lot of topplayers...

The real top is creating a gap between the subtop, I mean, the real top is the current top 6 (Serena, Kim, Venus, Justine, Lindsay & Jennifer) !!! The players who are ranked below this top 6 are not as good as this 6 players!

Why is everyone making reference to Daniela's thin body ? How can you be so sure that her skin body was the decisive factor in her shocking loss today against Dementieva ?
