(Obviously Venus & Serena are defending finalists), but Justine's having a great (so far) year on clay. Any thoughts?

An all Belgian final?

Iwouldn't put the pressure on Justine, remember what happened to Amelie when she won a couple of clay tournaments leading to the French a couple of years ago.

what the hell are you talking about,
Venus and Serena better pull out of Roland Garros,
they will beat Justine when Hell freezes over,
(that means never, just so you know....)

There is a difference between green clay and red clay right?

Of course, but she is the next/again big thing right?

Yes,

On Red Clay Justine is even better (Like a bull on a red carpet)
Remember Berlin and Rome last year.

all Belgian? we haven't even seen kim on the clay yet.

Anyway, again not taking anything away from Justines win, but in that first set, Serena up 3-0, when you loose 23 out of 26 points and hit 19 errors, i think more so, that had a lot to do with Serena than justine.

But last year, Justine was the threat going in, her and Serena, and venus also. I think the same thing can be said this year, but Kim? Not at all. Justine played two clay tournies, and so far 2 straight semis. Serena i think will do the same thing, and I think Venus will do well on the clay as well. She and Serena just played awesome on the Clay last year, Venus 2 finals, and serena aquarter and 3 finals 2 of them wins.

Justine, Serena, Linday right now, from the first 2 tournies we have seen, are the favorites for now.

I think we will add Venus and like Ameile by after Rome

But Kim, nope, i don't think she will do well, my personal opinion :)

on red clay, everyone is better, justine has said she likes the red more than the green (green is faster) and serena has also said this

Justine is streaky. What is the point of projecting all these fabulous wins for her because she won one big match? It's futile. Just remember Anika Kapros :)

Justine, Serena and Lindsay look deadly on green clay. I'd say those are the ones to watch for RG.

We haven't seen Venus or Kim yet so I'll reserve judgement and I don't want to look biased since they are my faves. :D

She is a big threat, but not the big threat.

I would pick her second favorite, same as last year, behind the same person, who would win it, and then three more majors in a row. But I'm biased.

Even if she doesnt win this tourney, she is still a big threat...her game is perfectly suited for the clay and her movement makes a major threat

justine was also such a threat last year....she was sick, but it just goes to show that anything cna happen...its still too early to tell

I think she is a threat regardless of if she wins....the only thing is ...I question how well she will be able to play considering hte number of tournys she is planning to enter.

Everyone in the top ten is a threat. THE THREAT? Sorry I wouldn't place that on her shoulders. Look what happened last year when kim and justine were supposed to be big threats. You never know what will happen. So basically I'd say everyone at the top is a threat because someone might play out of their mind and take someone out who you never thought would lose. In tennis anything can happen.

Well if Charleston and Amelia Island were the only clay tournaments leading up to RG, we could say she's the top threat ... but there are many more clay tournaments to come ... Warsaw, Berlin, Rome ... let's see who's gonna win those and then we'll talk about that!

but even so ... so many players do well in warm-ups and then just crash in the big one! Nothing is sure now!

She is a threat full stop, regardless if she wins this tourney or not.

Although it'd be good to see Dementieva defeat her, just to spice things up on the tour a bit! :)

people are getting very defensive when the word THREAT is being placed by Justine Henin's game. I think when it comes to the red clay, Justine is probably the biggest threat to the tour. Seeing the finalst last year, i think if they come out on their game, can take justine out in straight sets (yes i've thrown out venus vs. justine first meeting) but Justine about like Kim, relys on errors from Venus and Serena. But when it comes to the rest of the field, I think Justine is 3rd best on the clay right now, when everyone is playing great and on their games. Why am i writing of Lindsay Davenport? Speed not only frustrates Lindsay, but it also is a good weapon to have against her. It will get you back into a point, and when that happens, lindsay tends to be off guard, and you can get on the offense immediately. The point is then yours. This is what Serena does, clay or grass, or hard court all the time to Lindsay, along with Venus. On the clay, I think Justine can also do this, maybe even a little better, seeing she slides and moves better on the clay than Venus and Serena. But THREAT, yes I would say that Justine is a threat, to the entire tour, but when it comes to like Serena/Venus, she may be a threat, but it only comes into play if they are Off i.e. Charleston last week :)

Again right now its Jusitne, Serena, Lindsay, at the top of the list. I don't think Venus will have any problems getting into that list, she should start out very comfortable on the clay but Kim, she is the one that worries me. Even though her and Venus have been off for about the same time, Venus as we know (along with Serena) have the ability to come back firing ASAP, kim on the other hand, I think she will have a lot of extra rust, and some very close matches (maybe some early losses)

Bite me. I've always supporting Justine, and quite frankly expected her win today. I've never said anything bad about her - EVER. So don't even go there with me. This was an honest question... If she goes to Europe with a 9/10 match win streak, that's pretty impressive.

Sorry for trying to garner interest in Justine and trying to be supportive and pip her for a Slam. I'll never do it again.....

Id put Justine as the 3rd fave for a couple of reasons

the biggest is that, still, at her best and V and Renas best, even on red clay, she loses.
I know no one wants to admit it, but Serena lost that match more than Justine won it (although she played well) also, Venus is no slouch on the red stuff either

2, is Justine MENTALLY READY for a GS? That should really be the biggest question

as for Lindsay, yes shes crushing lower ranked players on green clay, but look what happened against Serena, and what probably will happen against Justine. Shes not a real threat to win unless the big guns get knocked out early

Top Threats
1. Serena
2. Venus
3. Justine
4. Kim
5. Lindsay

AjdeNate!

I think the top 4 players in the world, as well as any former champion (or 3 times in succession champion) are all threats.

I think winning all these matches in row will have a nice effect on Juju's confidence - if she keeps it going.

I believe Justine could have changed history last year, if she didn't come down with the flu.

It was suppose to be a Serena/Justine quarter. They had split the last 2 titles...both matches VERY close.

Of course Justine is a threat at Roland Garros...even if she loses at Amelia Island

Well theres a long way to go to RG, we have to see how the draw falls, if Venus is playing 100% and if Serena can improve her clay play.

That's pretty ignorant. I don't think any player has "played" their best tennis. And Justine did beat Serena last year on red clay. Here is the scores.
Baush & Lomb Championships
Amelia Island Plantation, Florida, United States
F
L Venus WILLIAMS USA 6-2 5-7 6-7(5)

Eurocard Ladies German Open 2002
Berlin, Germany
F
W Serena WILLIAMS USA 6-2 1-6 7-6(5)

Tennis Master Series Roma
Rome, Italy
F
L Serena WILLIAMS USA 6-7(6) 4-6

And to say Serena lost that match instead of Justine winning is another ignorant remark. It's not like Serena retired or withdrew. And for the "people" that are stating that Serena had huge leads in both sets, let me inform you that Justine had game points in most of those. So Justine played well throughout the match and won that.

justine is always a threat at RG because it's on clay. my question would be if someone else wins AI (such as dementieva, davenport, raymond or capriati) would they be considered a threat at RG?

CJ07
Apr 19th, 2003, 12:10 AM
Justine had what, 8 winners during that match.

She played well yes, but in that 23 of 26 points thing, Serena made NINETEEN ERRORS!!!

That means Justine only won 4 points on her own merit!

I'm not saying justine didnt deserve that win, but Serena handed her that match

And the reason why i say V and Rena will be justine when they play their best tennis is because whenever they DONT make errors, Justine gets crushed...but so does everyone else so she shouldnt feel bad

Rtael
Apr 19th, 2003, 12:19 AM
An unforced error doesn't mean that the person wasn't outplayed during that point, by any definition of the word.....

Also...I'd Jcap as more of a threat then Lindsay... Jenny has actually won RG before, AND she beat lindsay recently on hardcourt...so JCap is more of a threat then Lindsya for sure...

Venus & Serena had a fluke RG run last year. Hmm, try to win a tournament with the best clay-courters gone? You mean no Hingis, Henin, Clijsters, or Mauresmo? I won't even have to play young threats like Hantuchova or Dokic? You mean the only threat I'll play in the whole tournament is Capriati?

Easy.

So long as the other top players don't drop like flies in the first round like they did last year, the Williams sisters aren't getting to the RG final.

I'd say for sure that Justine, as of now, is the favorite. I want Kim to win but Justine is probably the best player on tour on clay, without a doubt.

CJ07
Apr 19th, 2003, 12:35 AM
JCap was blown off the court by Lindsay

in fact, other that that 2001 SF, Lindsay OWNS Jennifer

but i do agree with you, Jen is more solid on clay
however Lindsay, in my opinion, is better equipped to beat top players than Jennifer is

and i mean Top 4 top players, not top 12 top players
whens the last time Jennifer beat someone in the top 4? I cant even think of when
shes definately a threat though, no doubt
