View Full Version : The matches that brought tears to your eyes

Apr 18th, 2003, 04:48 PM
There have been so many great emotional matches in the history of the Women's tennis. Some of them must have brought tears to your eyes for various reasons.
By the way I have never cried watching a tennis match. So I have none :p I'm such an emotionless bastard. :p
What about you guys?
Wait!! I did almost cry watching the 98 French Open final between Monica and Arantxa.. Monica's dad died of cancer before the tournament and that was great to see her fight the way she did...She was so graceful when she lost the match. I didn't shid a drop of tears but I was certainly touched by the match.

I have never cried, but I have felt like I have been stabbed in the stomach from the dissapointement. Like when Elena D served for 6-3 6-3 win over Dani H and then saved 3 match points in the tie-breaker only to loose on a let cord!!

Anna K against Angie but lets not talk about that.

Martina against Jenny, although I love Jenny I also Love Martina and I was sooooooooo disapointed for her, just think if she had won what it might have done for her career now.

when Goran Ivanisevic finally won Wimbledon in 2001. It was so emotional!!

Probably when Serena and Venus won their first grand slams. Especially Serena because it was just unbelievable and totally unexpected. I cried like a newborn because her reaction was just priceless.

Venus' first one... I think I was screaming then when she went to the box to hug Serena and her dad, I couldn't hold it in and I cried, for maybe a second. Ok I'm lying for a good two minutes.

Let's not forget the Tour Champs semi-final between Kim and Venus. I cried pretty much for about 10 minutes after I saw Venus breakdown. I had to turn off the tv, then I remembered Serena was playing next so I had to get over it.

Yea ITA about Venus and Serena's first GS wins. I remember when Serena won US Open 1999 I was huddled round a radio listening to the match ( :o ) and couldn't believe it when she won it such a surprise.
Also watching Vee win wimbledon and her reaction afterwards was something special :)
Monica's loss to Martina in Chase final 2000 also brought a tear to my eye but for the wrong reasons! ;) as did Chanda's loss to Venus at the US open last year

When I heard Arantxa's wonderful and heartfelt speech, apologizing for beating Monica in that 1998 Roland Garros final, I cried. :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

When Steffi so improbably beat an annoying (annoying on that day; I liked her before & after that day!) Martina Hingis in the Roland Garros final the following year. And Steffi cried out, I will never forget it, "I FEEL FRENCH!" :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:

When Justine beat Jennifer, who was said to be on her way to winning THE Grand Slam, all 4, that is, in the 2001 Wimbledon semifinals. Coming out after the rain delay and continuing just as she had been, rather than succumbing to nerves as most might do in that position, made my heart swell with pride for Justine!! :hearts: :hearts: :hearts: And when she won, I actually hugged the tv!!! :D

tears oh happiness :
when serena won the US Open! It was so incredible, i thought she would be crushed by Hingis, because she was inspired after defeating Venus, so I really thought so. But when I was watching the match, I knew Serena was going to be a tough cookie, and in the end, even knowing that Serena would win, I cried LOL. She was so happy and me too :)

When Venus cameback on that match against Hingis in Us open 00.. Firstly they were tears of sadness.. I turned off the TV hopeless thinking *Venus is dones..* and my dad, a Hingis fan was provoking me.. and I was mad and sad for Venus, then suddenly I heard my dad screaming.. *Hingis what u're doing!* then i saw that Venus was 5-5 there! Then she closed the match and those tears became of happiness ;)

Sadness tears..

Wimbledon 2000 and 2001..
I was so sure that Serena would defeat Venus in Wimbledon.. The math began and the first set almost killed me.. Serena was playing so dumbly.. Making ridiculous mistakes and not being aggressive.. Then the second set came, and Serena was a lil' better.. but still erroneus.. She did 5-4 with Venus serving, and she had a set point.. but she couldn't make it.. Then the tie break.. Just one word : painful.. Serena was so sad and nervous for playing her first semifinal in a GS since US Open 99.. And against her sister.. When she double faulted, I started to cry and when I saw Serena crying and Venus trying to consolate her, I cried even more..

And in Wimbledon 2001.. I went to school, and I wa sso tired of Serena losing to Jennifer.. I really thought that she would defeat Jennifer this time. I was wrong again. I was on school nervous about the match and writing in every paper from my notebook "go serena, defeat jennifer..." :o I'm serious. When the school finished, I ran to my home, just to see the end of the match, and Jennifer was just killing Serena on the third set, and Serena was still making errors. And I remember on the last game, Serena just did errors, like she wanted to leave the court trying to save herself from an embarassment, and when I knew later that she had an opportunity to win the match.. GOD.. That day was awful for me.. I don't remember if I cried lol, but probably I wanted to...

Now I'm a stronger person ;) Nothing can shake me more :bounce: :bounce:

Wimbledon 1993. I teared up a bit when Jana started crying and the camera panned to Steffi who began crying as well. I felt bad for both.

I cried Wimbeldon 1989 semi's when Chris waved goodbye to the crowd and at the US Open quarters after she lost to Zina (who was crying way harder than Chris).

US Open 1981 finals. Martina finally won over the crowd and they gave her a lengthy ovation. She cried. I cried.

Apr 18th, 2003, 05:43 PM
FO '99 when Steffi won and then she tried to console Hingis in her speech

Wimbledon '00 when Pete broke the record...and I don't even LIKE Pete

Wimbledon '01 when Goran finally won

FO '99 when Andre won :)

The only matches that bring tears to my eyes are the ones where the players' sweaty towels aren't aired out enough and they begin to stink badly (a condition commonly know as "stank").

Apr 18th, 2003, 05:52 PM
Justine vs. Lindsay in the beginning of this year (I believe it was @ the Australian Open)... Though three-setter, Justine needed a medical time-out... After this interruption, she served an ace on second serve! It was a big fight, Justine kept on fighting and she won... It was unbelievable!!!

Kim vs. Serena @ the Masters was also very emotional for me! It was so great to see her win against Serena in this big tournament!

Apr 18th, 2003, 05:52 PM
a lot of matches were steffi lost. (most in wimbledon 98 but then I was on pms too and then I always cry a lot so steffi was only an excuse but then she always was)
wimbledon 92 (from happiness when they had this song with steffi walking with the dish)

Apr 18th, 2003, 05:56 PM

I have cried quite a lot. When Arantxa won 1998 French Open against Monica. After 1997 I thought she would never win another Slam. IMO this was ASV's best ever Slam. I cried when Arantxa lost to Steffi in the French final in 1996. The crowd were booing ASV, and she cried during her speech and that set me off. When Jana won Wimbledon I cried with her. When Goran won Wimbledon I cried for ages, I was so happy for Goran! When ASV retired I cried too

Apr 18th, 2003, 06:35 PM
1998 French Open final..Arantxa vs. Monica..even though I was a diehard Arantxa fan and mad that Monica had beaten Arantxa almost everytime they played I of course I had a softspot in my heart for Monica..everything that she's been through and considering that she said Arantxa is such a fighter and a great friend to her made me like her even more..I had mixed feelings at the end and I cried tears of joy and sadness. :)

Also 96 FO and 95 Wimbledon finals...darn that Steffi! :fiery: ;)

Moments that bought a slight tear to my eye...

Julie HD getting injured in a crucial Fed Cup doubles match, after a fantastic effort from her (she was subsequently out for 18 months)

Julie winning the titles in Birmingham (with me in the crowd!), Paris, Eastbourne and in the US Open doubles...all of which were wonderful. :hearts:

When Julie lost her QF in the French in 94(?) against Sanchez...she froze totally in the first set, but the second was an epic, emotional affair, full of amazing moments...Sanchez went on to win the GS title, but that day I really thought...what if...just maybe...

Julie's last singles match of her career at the Chase against Hingis, she played very well, with great freedom, but Hingis was awesome, so Julie went out in straight sets. Its the last time I saw her play.

i would have to say today's match between daniela h and elena d. daniela's loss is just humiliating!

Apr 18th, 2003, 09:25 PM
Elena D lost to Daniela last year in Zurich after losing four MP's.
Elena lost to Mauresmo 0-6 0-6 in Paris Indoor this year
I'm now glad to see Elena defeated Dani 6-0 6-1! :D

Apr 18th, 2003, 09:28 PM
i would have to say today's match between daniela h and elena d. daniela's loss is just humiliating!

Oh chap, cheer up man, it's not the end of the world. Look at what we've had to put up with in the last month - 6-2 and 5-2 up against Molik only to lose 6-2 5-7 0-6. Then if that wasn't bad enough we had the Harkleroad humiliation and now this.

I think we're supposed to be talking about tears of joy here. Well, I wasn't fortunate enough to see the Indian Wells final of last year but I've now got the tape :D Tears of joy man, many, many tears of joy!! :D

Apr 18th, 2003, 09:31 PM
Crying of happiness: Lindsay winning Oz Open and Wimby,Lindsay becoming n.1 in the world after a dramatic match vs Clijsters @ Chase Champs semi.

Crying of sadness: Lindsay losing to Venus Us Open final,France losing to Russia Davis Cup final and many more.

Memories...there have been quite a few ;

Steffi's French Open '99 win was tears of extreme joy. Her tears of joy said it all ! :bounce:

Monica's loss in the 1998 French Open final was very sad. After the loss of her father,it was so hard to see her lose when she had worked so hard .It would have been nice for her to win that one in her fathers memory.

When Pete broke the record at Wimbledon '00 it was a very emotional time.Seeing him break down and having his parents there to see it was just too much. I never cared for Pete myself, but this one was different. :worship:

Goran's Wimbledon win in '01-tears of joy and relief. He had been to so may finals and lost. I was so afraid if he didn't win that one he would have done something terrible. He really deserved that win.It was a long time comming.

Serena win over Steffi at 99' Indian Wells. Tears of joy for Serena! I truly wanted Steffi to win that match, but Serena's look on her face when she won match point was just shear joy. She acted like a kid in a all you can eat candy store! Steffi was very happy for her also that day, dispite having just lost to her. That made it even more special! :D

Andre losing to Pete, anytime, brings tears of anger. :fiery:

Apr 18th, 2003, 10:52 PM

Elena Dementieva's second set against Lindsay at USO 2000.. That was simply breathtaking..

Apr 18th, 2003, 11:32 PM
elena dementieva against lindsay at the Chase 2000 :D
after losing the first set and being down a break in the second elena just started hitting winners from anywhere
( i am still waiting to see her playing like this again )

lindsay actually played really well but that was elena's best performance
also the second set against lindsay at the US open 3 months earlier and her win against jelena dokic at the sydney olympics!

also kim's losses to jen at the 2001 FO and serena at the AO

only one :

Roland Garros 1999

Apr 19th, 2003, 01:26 AM
Lipton semis 1995. The pain still haunts me.

Apr 19th, 2003, 01:34 AM
Well, two come to mind:Wimbledon 91{Sabatini v Graf in the final} all Gaby had to do was hold serve and she would have won Wimbledon!! I think losing that final wrecked her career. Also, Novotna v Graf, I forget the year, it was a Wimbledon final, and Jana chocked BIG TIME!

Apr 19th, 2003, 02:02 AM
I think I may have cried at the '99 USO semifinal watching "the f*&*#@g Venus Williams" defeat Spirlea. Venus was soooo happy that day.

Apr 19th, 2003, 04:15 AM
I think I may have cried at the '99 USO semifinal watching "the f*&*#@g Venus Williams" defeat Spirlea. Venus was soooo happy that day.

That was 1997, not 99. And remember it was Spirela who resorted to intimidation tactics by bumping Venus at a changeover. Venus was arrogant; Spirela was ugly. That said, I liked Spirela...I wouldn't mind more ugliness on the women's tour.

For me, I got a lump in the throat at the Wimbledon finals in 98 and 99.

Novotna (who, like Spirela, nobody seems to remember anymore) finally vanquishing her demons on the grounds where she always seemed destined to win her first slam.

And Davenport, who wore her heart on her sleeve and put it quite poignantly after her win when she said (to paraphrase) "It was always my dream to win the US Open. Winning Wimbledon was beyond my dreams."

For men, the Goran-Rafter final at Wimbledon in 2001 was the most touching men's match I've seen in my short lifetime. I can see those two guys in 30 or 40 years, bald and paunchy, talking about what a special moment it was.

Apr 19th, 2003, 04:35 AM
australian open 2001 finals. pure joy. enough said.

Apr 19th, 2003, 10:48 AM
that epic breakdown of martina in ao '02 finals... i was just so disappointed and did not go to school that day.

Apr 19th, 2003, 11:05 AM
ao 02 finals

when she lost that second set after 4mps i knew it was over, even when she led by a break in the start of that third set. and that look of desperation after melanie signalled to her her shot was long (on the 4th mp), even though she KNEW it was long she still checked with melanie.

in fact i knew something bad was going to happen all along in that second set. up 5-1 against seles, lost 3 games then won 6-4. in first set, up 5-1 against capriati, lost 3 games then won 6-4. when she went up 4-0, i was like "not again"
