Why?

Because she wasnt born a swiss?

Well, I'm sure they don't literally hate her, but she wasn't born in Switzerland, so she's like Rusedski in england. Popular enough at the right times, but no Henman.

At least, from what I hear. :D

And that time she refused to appear on TV when she was nominated for an award.

I thought it was because she made some comments when she decided not to play fed cup any longer.

i wouldn't compare it to rusedski, it's an entirely different situation. martina is essentially swiss, in that she speaks the language with distinction and did change countries during her tennis career or for any motives of her own. i certainly don't hate her, but a lot of people do not like the fact that she just decided not to play fed cup anymore, and as a results we dropped out of the world group etc whereas if she was playing we would be challenging for the title. martina basically has shown no affinity for being swiss and a lot of people don't like that. i miss her though, although i think swiss tennis is in pretty good hands with patty, myriam, and manu. and if we can convince marie to stay with us we will be right back up there is a few years

Go Switzerland! You are my land (My surname is Switzer and i love you)

I seem to remember watching her win the Swisscom in 2000 over Lindsay and the crowd in Zurich was completely on her side and gave her a standing ovation when she won.

I don't think her decision not to play fed cup helped her, but I haven't seen any indication that the Swiss hate Martina.

Some on this board obviously hate her, for reasons I can't understand.

yeah it is very much a beat up from small factions of media and sad people on this board. martina did do a lot for switzerland and i really don't think many decent people would say they 'hate' her.

Is Marie a proper Swiss? Her name sounds French and i heard she was considering playing for France so is she really French?

she is swiss, but from a french speaking canton. she played juniors for armenia(her parents are from there) bc the swiss tennis federation was not giving her enough support in her opinion. she is continuing to have these problems it seems and yes i have believe she is consider switching to france, but i have no idea to what extant this is a genuine proposition or just an attempt to get the support she feels she deserves from the governing swiss tennis body. one thing i do know is that she is too talented a player for us to lose.

I thought quite a few people knew about this incident, I was just talking to some Hingis fans about it.

I also think the Swiss people must know by now that Martina is very loyal to Switzerland, a country she has repeatedly said she loves. With her money, she could have easily moved to Monaco or some other tax haven or moved to the United States, as so many players do.

Had she adopted American citizenship, I suspect the American press would have been much kinder to her.

But she has remained in her Swiss mountains and whenever asked about her citizenship emphatically proclaims herself Swiss.

I agree TonyP...Marti is truly a Swiss Miss :hearts: ...easy, that poster was quite likely one who believes evryone hates Marti--be careful on what people say everywhere b/c statements are hardly facts...remember Marti has many statements saying in effect the Swiss culture is much better than America...and of course that was taken way out of context by many for those trying to paint Marti as America-bashing. It was hardly the case but just Hingis pointing out some of the nice benefits from being in Switzerland and of Switzerland...the Swiss *must* love her for that :D

The Casonova's are not Swiss born either right? I can't think of an actual Swiss-born tennis star that really made a dent on tour. Christiane Jolissaint, Emanuela Zardo and Lilian Drescher where all ok players but never had Martina Hingis like results.

I think Switzerland should be proud of the name Martina Hingis.

I have never heard anything about Swiss people not liking Martina. In fact, I think many of her sponsors are Swiss companies (Omega watches is Swiss, I think) and even though she had to pull out of Swisscom Challenge, she still went to the tournament to meet people and please fans so as not to let down her sponsors and fans. Now that is class! And I do not think she would do it if Swiss people did not like her. I think it is just another dumb rumor.
