Schnyder Parts Company With Coach

Patty Schnyder has parted company with her coach of two years, Hubert Choudury. The 13th-ranked Schnyder is currently working with Brazilian Raul Ranzinger, who will coach her on an interim basis.

The 24-year-old Swiss ended her working relationship with Choudury after her first-round setback to wild card Ansley Cargill in Sarasota. Following that defeat, the French-born Choudury left the United States and returned to Europe.

"Different conceptions of training and tournament planning on the one hand and the departure of Hubert Choudury out of the USA on the other hand are the reasons for the contract cancellation," Schnyder's press agent, Marco Mordasini, said in a statement emailed to Tennis Week.

Under Choudury's guidance, Schnyder rose from the rank of No. 52 in the spring of 2001 to No. 13. She claimed tournament titles at Pattaya in 2001 and in Zurich last autumn. At the 2002 Family Circle Cup last spring, Schnyder scored successive victories over Mary Pierce, Amelie Mauresmo, Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati to reach her first career Tier I final before falling to Iva Majoli.

Denying published reports in Tages-Anzeiger that suggested Choudury's departure was provoked by Schnyder's fiance and manager, Rainer Hofmann, reducing the coach's salary, Mordasini said neither money nor the presence of Hofmann contributed to the split.

"Patty Schnyder would like to emphasize that (she) was able to learn and profit out of (the) collaboration with Hubert Choudury," Mordasini said in the statement. "We would like to (stress) that payments as well as the presence of Rainer on the tennis tour is not the reason for the immediate separation."

According to Mordasini, there are no plans to hire Ranzinger as Schnyder's full-time coach.

"(Ranzinger) will not become the new coach of Patty Schnyder," Mordasini said
