Television means more athletes get more exposure, and the most famous athletes get the most exposure. Muhammed Ali is in a class by himslef, but Michael Jordan is probably the most famus athlete on the planet. A lot of the under-21 types don't know WHY Ali was famous, they just know they's heard the name. Certainly Jordan is the most famous, for purely ATHLETIC reasons.

Of all-time it must be Mohammed Ali for sure! Michael Jordan is( was?) very popular too..

Female athletes. My guess that the Williams sisters must be moving very fast on that ladder.

The most famous sporting figures are:

1. Michael Jordan
2. Tiger Woods
3. Anna Kournikova

In that order. Ali may be even more famous than these but he is in a class of his own...I totally agree with Volcana.

The Williams sisters, Sampras, Agassi, etc are miles behind these three in terms of sheer fame.

i think the Americans need to understand and appreciated tht MJ isnt AS popular in other countries as he is in the USA. people will know hes a b-ball player but they wont know all his accomplishments, his many retirements etc.

whereas due to their Wimbledon domination, and her burst onto the scene with a semi at Wimbledon (and her looks) if u say the W/S or Anna Kournikova to someone walking down the street here, they could tell u MORE about them than Michael Jordan :)

Leslie, just do a google search. Anna is much better known on the net than the Williams sisters. That may be an artifact of the net, but I bet that most kids who have never heard of any other player have heard of Anna.

It may not be deserved, but that's how it is.

Anna gets more google hits than Ali, too, but Ali's name is often mispelled. Besides, you'd expect a current sports person to get more hits than someone like Ali who is almost an historical figure by now. Ali's fame in the community, especially among older people who are not so inclined to use the net, is such that I still think he is more famous than Jordan, Woods or Kournikova.

Before I started following tennis, the only tennis names I could think of were Navratilova, Graf and Boris Becker.

Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods aren't as famous here, basketball and golf are never shown on TV over here.

Football players are the most famous, IMHO. So Pele's definitely one of the most famous sports stars everywhere in the world, USA excepted ;) And Maradona too.

I am constantly amazed how the word "WORLD" in narrowly defined by people in general and Americans in particular. When a question is asked about the "WORLD", invariably most americans assume the question is limited to the USA. If you were to ask 100 Americans (randomly chosen) about the most popular sports figures in the world, I would be surprised if names like Pele (football), Garfield Sobers (cricket) Kip Keino (Track and Field) .....would ever get mentioned.

The sad reality is that in this era of internet and satellite TV, many Americans still view the world with a heavy dose of geographic myopia.

 Although Anna Kournikova is extremely "famous", you must look at the "demographic" inwhich she's most famous. That happens to be in the "pre-pubescent, adolescent and young adult WHITE male". In that age group/demographic, she is undoubtibly the undisputed winner. However, among other groups she is not as popular, and that fact has to be taken into account when discussing her popularity. I bet you a "fat man" that if you polled a group of African American males in Philly or the Big Apple that she would poll very, very low, if at all. So, Anna's fame and popularity is strictly an "alpha white male phenomenon"!! Pure and simple!!!!!

This might surprise folks in the USA but Michael Schumacher might be a contender. Also Ronaldo.

Muhammed Ali, Babe Ruth, Jack Nicklaus and Carl Lewis might be better examples of US sportsmen who are known around the world if you are talking about all-time. Maybe Sampras as he won Wimbledon so often.

Mauresmo was right here in Belgium and went to the cenima without
being recognized. I am sure if Anna Kournikova comes to Amsterdam
no one will recognize her as being famous.
She is not famous anywhere. If happen go to Africa and question
people who have access to televission, they will say they don't know
Anna Kournikova.
But Ask about the Williams Sisters. They are known everywhere.
You can't compare williamses popularity with that of Anna.

Impossible to tell unless travelling to remote parts of earth. Like Mongolia, Black Africa etc.

I´d say these names might ring a bell there too

- Mohammed Ali, make a noice and you´ll be remembered. Not that unbelievable record in the ring

- Michael Schumacher, must be because only finn that people know is Mika and he is well known too

- Pele, best athlete of all time and soccer is global sport. Good chance of him being most famous

- Michael Jordan, maybe. I actually had to think a sec who he is. So maybe those that don´t follow basketball (like me) have same problem

- Tiger Woods now, but maybe Faldo,Nicklaus,Player and co. are more recognisable names.

- Tennis players not that well know outside of sport.

(Who is Babe Ruth ?...) (Ok, someone who has played baseball, no that is not global sport)

Of women (this is tough)

- Women of the wta. Navratilova or Graf should be most known although Anna K. might rival them.

Ali, Tiger, Jordan,Schumacher, Beckham, Serena, Venus and Anna

Btw in tennis the Q score revealed in America that Serena followed closely by Venus were the most popular players. This was in April tennis Magazine.

Popular Opinion
Who do you love?
The Q Score reveals all

Serena Williams is No.1 on the court and in the hearts of Americans. So says the gold standard of popularity ratings, the Q Score. The number, derived annually from surveys of a few thousand people, is a measure of likability of top sports and entertainment celebrities. Advertisers pay serious cash for the Q's ($14,800 for the sports list alone) to help determine which stars to seek for ad campaigns.

The Q Score quantifies popularity in many categories, including the general public and fans of a particular sport. The number is the percentage of respondents familiar with the celebrity who rate him or her as "one of my favorites." Among active tennis players, Serena Williams was followed by her sister Venus in popularity in both the general-public and tennis-fans categories, according to Steven Levitt, president of Marketing Evaluations Inc., the Manhasset, N.Y., research firm that minds the Q's. The top men were Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and Lleyton Hewitt. - Kevin O' Keefe

Q Score - General Public - Tennis Fans
Serena Williams 18 - 45
Venus Williams 17 - 45
Pete Sampras 14 - 36
Anna Kournikova 14 - 31
Lindsay Davenport 11 - 25
Andy Roddick 10 - 22
Martina Hingis 10 - 34
Jennifer Capriati 10 - 25
Monica Seles 9 - 27
Andre Agassi 9 - 32
Lleyton Hewitt 5 - 12

Muhammad Ali tops the list. I remember being surprised a few years ago to learn that he is one of the most univeresally recognized HUMANS -- not just athletes -- in the world.

Pélé

Ronaldo

Justine Henin-Hardenne (kidding!! :D )

On the internet angle:
Google, by far the most-used search engine, announced in December that its most-searched athlete of 2002 was not Anna Kournikova (who had topped the 2001 list), but David Beckham. As others have said, internet users represent only a miniscule portion of people worldwide, but I still found it interesting since Beckam is not exactly a household name in the US.

Hmm I'd say Edson Arantes do Nascimento and Michael Jordan because they are both icons in the two most accessible mass sports. You basically only need a ball (and a basket for basketball of course) to play these sports.

 NO hockey players mentioned! I don't think my geographic myopia is too off. SOme of these boys are Canadian even a few from Europe! For all-time greatest center? Wayne Gretzky? Mario Lemieux? Phil Esposito, Stan Mikita, Marcel Dionne, Darryl Sittler, Jean Beliveau or Mark Messier? How about your left wing? Do you go with Bobby Hull? Luc Robitaille? Dave Andreychuk or Michel Goulet? To round out the top line, who is your right wing of choice? Gordie Howe? Mike Bossy? Jari Kurri? Guy Lafleur or Maurice Richard? In your defensive zone, Bobby Orr? Ray Bourque? Paul Coffey? Larry Robinson? Denis Potvin? Doug Harvey? Chris Chelios? Eddie Shore? The choices don't get easier when you have to pick your netminder. Who do you go with when names such as Ken Dryden, Patrick Roy, Terry Sawchuk, Jacques Plante, Grant Fuhr, Dominik Hasek, Billy Smith, Tony Esposito and Gump Worsley are staring you in the face?

goto Africa/Asia/South America and they will look at you with blank stares

2-Pele

no one even comes close to those two. not even Michael Jordan.
He's only famous cos of Nike Air Jordan not cos who he is.
