Steffi Graf 377 weeks
Martina Navratilova 331 weeks
Chris Evert 262 weeks
Martina Hingis 209 weeks
Monica Seles 178 weeks
Serena Williams 48 weeks
Lindsay Davenport 38 weeks
Tracy Austin 22 weeks
Jennifer Capriati 17 weeks
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 12 weeks
Venus Williams 11 weeks

It's interesting to me to see how many of the women actually played each other after at least one of them had been #1. Do the number of existing number ones in an era mean anything for the significance of the person's ranking?

-Graf: Navratilova,LD Evert,Austin,Hingis,Aranxta Sanchez-Vicario,Seles(7)
-*Navratilova:Graf,Evert,Seles,Austin,Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario,Davenport,JenCap(7)
-*Evert:Navratilova,Graf,ASV,Austin,Seles(5)
-Hingis:Seles,S.Williams,Davenport,Jen.Cap,ASV,Venu s Williams, Graf(7)
-Seles:Evert,Hingis,S.Williams,L.Davenport,Navratil ova,Jen.Cap,ASV, Venus Williams.(8)
-Serena Williams: Steffi Graf, Hinigis, Seles, Lindsay Davenport, Jen. Cap, ASV, Venus Williams(7)
-Lindsay Davenport:Navratilova,Graf,Hingis,Seles,S.Williams ,JenCap,ASV, Venus Williams, Tracey Austin(9)
-Tracey Austin: Davenport, Evert, Navratilova(3)
-Jennifer Capriati: Navratilova, Graf, ASV, Hingis, S.Williams, Seles, Davenport, Venus Williams, (8)
-Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario:Graf, Navratilova,Evert, Hingis, Seles, S. Williams, Davenport, JenCap, Venus Williams(9)
-Venus Williams: Graf, Hingis, Seles, S. Williams, Davenport, JenCap, ASV(7)

This list may not mean much, but I had fun compiling it. It looks like, ASV and Lindsay lead the list having faced 9 of the 10 #1's. They are followed closely by Seles and JenCap with 8. Navratilova, Serena, Hingis Venus and Graf seem to have 7. Evert only faced 5 #1's, and Tracey Austin only faced 3.

*Faced #1's that were not ranked in the official computer at the time.

Well acctually ASV, Lindsay, and Jen would have faced 9/10 possible opponents, because they couldn't have faced the 11th, themeselves.

For Jenn you have ASV in there twice...so she had 8.

Of course your ability at perpetually keeping anyone else from becoming number one tends to reduce the number of number ones you have to play - which explains why Steffi gets her 6.... and why jen gets an 8! In that sense low scores can either show domination or relative lack of opposition.

Navratilova never faced Jenn Cap, ASV and Davenport when they became #1 (2001, 95, 98), unless you consider playing doubles as a full time job on the WTA tour which is not.
Same goes for evert against ASV.

Pure, Graf faced Davenport when she was #1.

It says 'after at least ONE of them had been number 1' so obviously when Martina Navratilova played Jennifer, ASV and Lindsay she had been at number one. Same for Chris as obviously she had been at number 1 by the time she played ASV. I think thats what Pureracket means?

How close was Conchita to the number one?

I don't know if she was ever that close. I would imagine if she was, it would been during the French Open in 1995 after her scorching clay season and with Wimbledon '94 still on her record. Of course, she lost in the semis of that event to Steffi, but perhaps if she had won it, she would've taken over #1. But I don't really know.

Is this just while the player was #1? Cause I don't think Navratilova played JC when either was #1.

BUT...if that doesn't matter, then Venus and Serena have faced Graf multiple times ;)
