Released by the LTA today:

THREE STARS CONFIRMED FOR EASTBOURNE

Jennifer Capriati, currently ranked No. 6 in the world and one of the top names in women’s tennis, has confirmed she will be playing in this year’s Hastings Direct International Championships at Eastbourne. (June 16-21).

Capriati said: “I am glad to be coming back to Eastbourne, the fans have always been very supportive there. It’s a great tournament, it’s is very well run and I think it is an ideal tune up for Wimbledon.”

Championship organisers are also delighted to announce that Chanda Rubin and Anna Kournikova have confirmed their entry for this year’s WTA Tour event at Devonshire Park in the traditional warm-up to The Championships, Wimbledon.

Capriati, winner of three Grand Slams and a recent finalist at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Florida, will be one of the favourites to capture the prestigious grass court title.

There will also be plenty of interest in the entries of Chanda Rubin, as she defends her 2002 title and Anna Kournikova, a former Wimbledon semi finalist.

Hastings Direct International Joint Championships Director John Feaver said: “We are delighted that Jennifer has committed to playing at Eastbourne this year and her presence at the event will only add to its already high profile. Jennifer’s success in rebuilding her career and becoming one of the most successful women players in recent years is one of the most amazing stories in the history of tennis.”

“We are confident of announcing several other big names for this year’s championships at Eastbourne, tickets can now be booked on the Championship hotline 01323 412000.”

The Hastings Direct International Championships are the most prestigious women’s event in Britain outside The Championships, Wimbledon and it is one of the most keenly awaited dates in the WTA calendar.

This is the first year that the Eastbourne tournament has been sponsored by Motor Insurance provider Hastings Direct, who committed to a two-year deal beginning in 2003. Hastings Direct are already a key supporter of British tennis due to its sponsorship of the National Hastings Direct Tour, but the new backing demonstrates its commitment to international tennis as well.

The Hastings Direct International Championships at Eastbourne is an official LTA event on the WTA Tour. The main draw starts on Monday June 16 and ends on Saturday June 21. Ticket prices range from 5-24 and can be ordered by calling the hotline on 01323 412000. I wonder if Navratilova will be tempted to make a return singles visit after last year?

Yea, after all, she's got points to defend! ;)

Sounds good. I could be tempted to join the blue rinse brigade and lezzies who traditionally descend upon Eastbourne each year.

You'll fit right in David ;) :p

I like this tournament (from watching some on TV in the past), but the weather can be quite shitty.

The squawking birds in the stands get on my nerves. Not keen on the sea gulls either.

Are you referring to overexcited Navratilova fans there?

They dont get excited at Eastbourne. They just bicker, and eat fish n' chips straight from the paper.

unless you have seen it live yourself, you can't appreciate the size of crowd that Martina draws. folks are seriously interested in watching her play. and i ain't referring to the blue rinse brigade. it's like watching a living legend. folks can't get enuf. ;)

i hope jelena defends birmingham instead.

she got treated like shit last year at Eastbourne when they stuck her on a minor court for her opening match, even though she was seeded number one and had just won birmingham.

jelena has principles, so I wouldn't be surprised if she avoids eastbourne this year.

the thing about Eastbourne is that even if it is a crappy field, there will still be lots of pensioners watching ;) But it is ncie to see Jennifer playing, she need some grass court warmup, a very smart schedule

uh........... i doubt that Jelena will even play here. she's gonna defend her Birmingham grass title the week before this, and she has said that she won't be playing the week before the Slams, so if she lives up to her words, she likely won't make the trip down here, and she has 0 to defend here anyways.

the best thing about Eastbroune isnt the tennis, its the golden oldies in the crowd, tehy come up wiht some classics.

In doubles, if a player misses a really easy smash or volley its pretty normal for her and her partner to laugh, the 'golden oldies' frown upon thus as mutterings of "it's all just a big joke to her, not like it was in our day" can heard from the stands.

A thread was posted last year about some of the hilarious comments made at Eastbourne 2002, but i dont know if it's still around, it included things like:

"Yes Davenport is playing, she just won ehr forst round match"

"it'll be a shock if Maleeva beats Pullin"

etc...

Thank god i'm of to Birmingham, poorly advertised, no1 cares about it, and it's not at the seaside, it'll just eb me and they other dozen wtaworld members in the stands :p
