Defending champ loses in Budapest

April 15, 2003
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -- Defending champion Martina Muller of Germany was eliminated from the Budapest Grand Prix on Tuesday, losing to Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Romania's Ruxandra Dragomir Ilie, the tournament's 1996 winner, was beaten by Slovakia's Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1, 6-4 in the $110,000 clay-court event.

Third-seeded Alicia Molik of Australia and fifth-seeded Virginie Razzano of France reached the second round.

Molik, the runner-up at Sarasota, Fla., two weeks ago, beat Martina Sucha of Slovakia 6-1, 6-0, and Razzano rallied past Rita Kuti Kis of Hungary 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Top-seeded Iva Majoli of Croatia opens Wednesday against Andreea Vanc of Romania.

It's nice to see her maintain the consistency. She has lost 18 of her last 20 matches (that includes Challengers).

Her two wins came against Ċsa Svensson, who has been having some injury problems I believe, and Leanna Baker, a NZ player ranked around #400. That one took her three sets.

At this rate, she will be filing her first application at the local McDonald's restaurant at the end of September.

And I don't even mean to mock her. She is sort of a borderline fave of mine. But her performances have been excruciatingly bad. Beyond redemption.

It's not beyond redemption yet. There have been worse streaks. It just needs to turn around. Benesova is a good player, and the match was reasonably close. She just needs a win....

Matina Sucha, on the other hand, has zero chance of ever becoming a player. ;)

I think Benesova has talent to be at least top 20 someday.

muller did very well when she first came on the tour and din't have much trouble adjusting but now she's having a terrible streak.

benesova has beaten henin i think. she does have top 20 talent but so do a lot of other players. personally i'd put the younger players in with a better chance (zvonareva, kuznetsova, safina, strycova, douchevina, casanova, sharapova, golovin)
