ST. PETERSBURG, FL (April 15, 2003) – World No. 1 Serena Williams has withdrawn from next month’s MasterCard German Open in Berlin, the WTA Tour announced Tuesday.

Williams, 21, is bypassing the Berlin tournament, which begins May 5, in order to rest and continue her preparation for the upcoming European portion of the season. Her next scheduled event is the Telecom Italia Masters, beginning May 12, in Rome, Italy.

“After playing so many matches at the beginning of 2003, I have decided to take an additional week off to prepare for the European season,’’ said Williams, who reached the final in Berlin last year where she lost a close, three-set match to Justine Henin-Hardenne. “My focus right now is to prepare myself both mentally and physically for the upcoming major events in May and June. I regret that I will not be returning to the MasterCard German Open in 2003 where I have had so much success, but I do look forward to returning to Rome."

Williams, who lives in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, is off to an impressive start this season, winning 21 of her 22 matches in 2003 and completing a “Serena Slam,’’ sweeping the past four Grand Slam titles (2002 French Open, 2002 Wimbledon, 2002 US Open, 2003 Australian Open). In four appearances this season, she has won three titles (Australian Open, Open Gaz de France and NASDAQ-100 Open) and reached one final (Family Circle Cup

Too bad, I hope that she stays in Rome, but I really do think the Williams' shoud commit to more tournaments!!!

Well, only she knows what is best for her and her body, so I'll trust that Serena is doing the right thing. Besides...at this point, she has so many ranking points...it's not going to make much of a difference.

Maybe now Venus will play Berlin?! Since she'll be in Warsaw, she may just jet over to Berlin...but then she's scheduled to play Roma, so that may be too much tennis for her.

Maybe Venus will play Warsaw and Berlin, and skip Rome, leaving that for Serena.

A sensible idea if you work under the assumption that they avoid scheduling the same events since they don't like having to play each other. :)

But whatever works for your Princess...I hope the Queen takes her spot...

Serena must have an audition ;)

I agree.

But, this can be bad news for Venus if she doesn't enter. Kim will gain many points here, and may even win the title, giving her a lot of points, pushing Venus right back down to #3.

The race for #2 for Roland Garros is on.

I hope Venus enters...why play a tournament with Serena if you don't have to...

If Vee goes deep in Warsaw and whatever her other tourney is, she should be fine for #2 at RG

Sort of shocking to realize that Venus Williams has played only 14 matches this year.

Especially when you consider she won more matches then anyone else did last year

Serena...I wonder if the loss at FCC took more out of then we realize? She played FCC, Berlin and Rome last year and look what happened...a Roland Garros title. I hope she's not playing to little...if that's possible.

Anyway, I support Serena and her decision. She knows what's best for her

Its obviously up to Serena what she plays and to know how well she feels but I do wish she would hire a spokesman who didn't say such silly things. "She is taking Berlin off to prepare for the European season". Berlin as far as I know is still in Europe and her European clay season might now, if she follows last year, consist of just the Italian and French opens which is a pretty short season to prepare for. Assume the UK is In Europe and add Wimbledon and you get up to three tournaments, but its still more like a short trip than a season. Does she share the same publicity guy who told us earlier in the year that Venus had too busy a schedule to play the Gulf tournament she had scheduled herself for?

I have a feeling we'll see a sister swap

Venus playing Warsaw, Berlin, Rome
Serena playing Rome, and Stanford

but I'm sure Venus is aware of her situation, and i did read an article stating that V wanted to play in Berlin

That thing about the European season was funny!

Here's the German take on it.

fammmmedspin
Apr 15th, 2003, 08:10 PM
That was a little pointed of the Germans to say that!
I imagine they intended the emphasis of the last sentence to be on the name of the player responsible not the fact of the unterlag? Is Justine H2 playing Rome?

Venus won't take Berlin, she already stated she doesn't want to play two weeks in a row anymore, outside the GS, that's why she pulled out of Dubai. Venus will definitely not play 4 weeks in a row, including Fed Cup.

It's a Tier I. They are not likely to be happy that the uncontested world No. 1 is a no-show at their premier event, so they took a slight at her.

Maybe they could ask the ATP to send her a fine.

Serena may be doing the right thing-but c'mon, who writes these things for tennis players like..

"after so many matches this year".
Get real. 22 matches so far is not such a horrible burden

or

"after so much success there last year".
It was one of the few events she lost!

Whoever is writing this tripe needs to get better at it!

26 matches actually if you count the Hopman Cup.

Kim has played abolut 32 or 34 singles matches this year plus doubles.

Venus played 16 tournaments last year actually
she had a 62-9 record

And I am surprised. A third of the year is already over.

If she says she wont play 2 weeks in a row, and knowing Venus' traditional schedule...I dont see how she plans to stay top 3

Think about it

Her next event is Warsaw, then Rome, Paris and Wimbledon. Shes not playing Stanford as Serena is there and I doubt she'll play 6 events w/ Serena in one summer. Next is San Diego, then Toronto (which she'll probably w/d from) then the Open.
Venus rarely plays during fall, but she usually plays Philly if its there, it is, then theres the champs
that = 12 tournaments?????

And a far as being hated, Monica certainly wasn't "hated" and it was a fan of the number two player in the world who stabbed her so that that player could regain the number one spot.

Are you suggesting that one of Venus's fans is gonna stab Serena?

I have all faith that V will win a slam, but even with one or two, she'd need all three of them to get to #1 w/ that schedule (2000-2001 anyone?) and if she DOESNT then she could realistically be #5 :(

It's good to See Serena pull out, I think heading into Rome, she will be so determined and prepared to just really go all out and win it easily. Like Pam, said, this loss has done Serena a lot of good. There really is no more pressure. I think Serena has been the most pressured number 1 ever. Beginning of the year it was all about the Serena Slam. She almost lost that, but never let up on her grip. Then after that, it was the "can she be undefeated" talk. If going into the French, Serena was undefeated, I think it would've really increased her chances of winning, but her level of play might have been a little sloppy knowing, she is undefeated and can win 5 straight slams. Now that she has lost, and plans to take a break and practice and train and get prepared mentally and physically, I think she will look extra amzing in Rome and the French. These titles so far are her's to win or loose. Justine is a great player, but I think Serena will come back playing about a good level around where she started with lindsay. I think she is going to really watch that match, see what all she did, take it in, and keep trying to play around there. If that all works out, she should be good to start wimbledon and the Rome and French Open champion ;) Of Course beating Venus in the finals of both :)

If Venus plays the 12/13 events a year, and starts to WIN, she can be #1. Serena only plays 12/13 events, and she's #1. ;) It's just a matter of getting over the obvious mental block she has against Serena. Every time they are to face, I can't help but think back to the US Open 2001. Venus said "This doesn't even feel like a win" after the match, and later on "I would be happier if Serena beat me" :o

for Serena it's true, I can't remember the last time Serena played this much tennis for the first half of the year

Serena has played 26 match plus (I think) 10 doubles matches

For Serena that is a lot, I understand why she withdrew.

Reading this thread, I would have thought Venus had pulled out.... I think Venus should stick to her schedule playing 4 weeks in a row is big no no.

Serena's played over 30 matches, 38 to be exact (if I counted right) including singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at the Hopman cup, and exhibitions. We must not forget she went the distance in every tournament, only losing ONE match in all 38 matches.

That is a lot of tennis.

About the same as Lindsay, who will have a lot more than that by the time Berlin rolls around. Far less than Kim, who is showing no signs of fatigue. Speaking of Kim, she just moved a few hundred points closer to #1.

I honestly believe the main reason is the loss to Justine. I think Serena doesn't think she was ready enough to play on the clay courts with a true clay court player, and is gonna practice some more.

Just my feelings.:)

All this concern about Venus however since she has been in the top 10 she hasnt ended a year ranked below number 5 and if I remember correctly she hasnt ended a year ranked below number 3 in the last 3 years. She likes to play limited tournments and it works for her so u cant really complain. Rankings really dont mean too much to Venus as one can clearly see she was doing more damage on tour when she was ranked number #3 than when she was either 2 or 1 so i say stay happy doing what your doing venus and if that means a number 3 ranking so be it as long as u get the big titles.
