View Full Version : Should WTA fix matches to let Kournikova win her first tournament?

It wouldn't have to be a Slam. I am sure a Tier II tournament would do nicely. Of course, no one would be aware of that, including Anna herself, except for the players who would have to lose. But they wouldn't mind doing it for such a worthy cause and, besides, they would be rewarded for their assistance handsomely.

This historic event would not only help Anna but it would also generate enormous interest in women's tennis; something that could not be compared to anything ever taking place in history of all sports dating back to the first Olympic games in the ancient Greece.

Imagine the headlines around the world if Anna finally won her first title. Everyone would talk about it: from Oprah to Oral Roberts. This board would be overloaded with posters, so much so, that it would have to be shut down periodically. Every day, a few overzealous Anna fans would have to be banned from the board to maintain some sort of sanity. Tickets to all tournaments featuring Kournikova would be sold out a year in advance. By association, all top 100 players would become household names.

In short, it would be a win-win situation for everybody. Why not do it?

Hmmm, it sickens me to think that Anna doesn't have the head to win a tournament. Do not tell me she doesn't have the talent to win at least a Tier V event. It's quite sad. Talent is there, no? Come on Anna.

She gives it away too much.

Then it wouldn't be a real win, because they would only do it as a favor, not because she earned it.

It seems no one thinks Don King would be of any help in this matter. But he is an unmatched master in this type of "business".

Hell yes, then we're rid of this "When is Anna gonna win her first tourney?" crap once and for all.

I just hope that she can win one stupid WTA title, if its the Middleofnowhere Classic it would be ok, just needs to get that monkey off her back, Elena and Vera as well.

No fixing.
But perhaps the time is coming to have, say, 5 new tournaments a year for top 60 players who have never won a tournament. At least some of them would have to win something then. I nominate Anna K, Elena D and Francesca S for the "time for a win tour" add your own players.
Of course there is the potential humiliation that you still might never win......

It wouldn't help. Once she wins her first title, all anyone will be able to ask is, "Is Anna a flash in the pan?"

Instead of outright fixing a tournament, what they need to do is create a Tier VIII tournament called the KournikOpen and restrict it to players ranked lower than 500, plus (as a "publicity stunt") any player whose name happens to resemble the tournament name itself. Then everyone can express great surprise when such a person exists, a player named Anna Kournikova. Gosh, who knew?! Well, now that the rule has been created as a publicity stunt, it still must stand, so Ms. Kournikova may enter the tournament.

On top of that, this tournament should be held in Moscow, and any non-Russian participant will mysteriously encounter problems with her visa.

Then they can get Mary Carillo to commentate, and she can use the pun, "this tournament features a Kournukopia of tennis players," just because someone needs to and she will be the only one brave enough.

And Lawrence Welk says, "Anna 1, Anna 2..." (Kudos to all old enough to understand that.)

As long as we get Don King, I think it's a great idea ;)

She has had more than 5 events (02 Shangai, Luxembourg 00, Acapulco 01, Auckland 01, Warsaw 02, Bol 02), she should have won with ease and still loses so she can GTH.

No one gives anything on this tour which is so competitive. So yes would be a dream to see her win a tournament, but thinking someone is giving it to her it´s just stupid.

At Moscow 2000 i thought maybe Martina was going to tank that match a give Anna such a win, But  even back then Anna deserved it more, because she was top ten or at least heading to top 10. Not like now :(

Hey...I asked the tour to do this for me in the Grand Slams way back. They refused me! So if I couldn't get it then Anna shouldn't either. So there.

Glenn, great caption!

Pam, it is unfair to compare your situation with Anna's. You see, the tour couldn't fix the draws for you out of the fear that people would stop watching women's tennis altogether had you won a slam. Anna, on the other hand, could demand a rigged draw and she would probably get it. She has too much pride for that though ;) .

Actually, if it was like "Joe Millionaire",and after all the hype and hoopla, sat maybe a year later, they reveal the deception, I could get into it. Providing Anna had managed to win another one by then.

Maybe she can get to face the Bye Family in the draw and reach the final, where her oponnent gets injured
